1. And a tribute - Verdine White inspired the bass player in my first band (me on guitar), who turned me on to EWF and, eventually bass. Remember sending off a coupon from the music press for a 4-song EP when they were barely known in the UK. Best freebie ever! RIP Maurice.
2. Suggest respectfully you rename thread so all tributes appear under one heading...
3.
Mr Big's singer said I'm 'Billy Sheehan reincarnate - and he isn't even dead yet.'
The rate our heroes are currently dying off its sensible to have reserves 😈
4. There can't be many of us he didn't touch with his music and imagery. A musical chameleon for sure but an innovator. RIP.
5.
I heard on the radio he wanted to use jazz players to play rock
No-one better tell him about Steely Dan then!
6. Not related to the album which I've yet to hear, but: I went to the Bowie V&A Exhibition which was at Melbourne before Xmas. It told me something I never realised - he was hugely important in my musical life, but only in a couple of periods. The rest of his stuff left me cold. I would be amazed given the changes (huh?) he's been through that there are any true lifetime fans who've connected with everything. Sorry to derail...
7.
Those two tunes are just doubling the guitar, though. Are people recognising the bass part, or the guitar part..?
But if Jack Bruce wrote it... (Sunshine)
8. Sunshine Of Your Love... Jack Bruce once said it was what he'd be remembered for.
9. Was your pearloid scratch plate original? I would love one for mine in that colour...
10. My regular amp at a better price than I paid for it. Get stuck in - this is a bargain!
11. A Jimi Hendrix gold disc for 'Radio 1'...with my name on! I did press for the release - not the most difficult job in the world, but was great to be recognised. It's been all downhill since 😁
12. Hey! We passed thru Lafayete en route from San Antonio to New Orleans 18 months ago. It was blowing a gale so didn't get up to much... Learned what a bass solo is for in New Orleans - it's what let's the guitarist pass round the bar with the tips jar Welcome to Basschat my friend.
13. A grreat man. Very sad. But the very best way to go if you gotta go...
14. Just came back from playing a 65 Jazz with matching headstock, borrowed from house bassist. It's the Hobart Blues Club. Tell Ross I sent ya 😎
15. Have just retired after 30 years interviewing musicians. WZ was the most unpleasant and screwed-up individual I spoke to in that time. As a big fan of his music, and having read the book, I think this definitely fuelled his muse. The Excitable Boy album is still up there as unique and a classic. And Werewolves ain't even the best track, IMO.
16. Doing it at the moment! A 'geriatric gap year' with the missus to celebrate retirement; 6 mths in Australasia and 6 in north America. Had bought a uke bass with the intention of turning up to jams etc but lack of a hard case (Harley Bentons are bigger) meant I opted for a mandolin. My wife plays concertina/sings Irish music so in theory I can accompany her. I have borrowed a bass for both jams attended so far... May buy a cheap bass in States when major flying is over.
17. Interviewed RS for the DVD/CD Access release. Lives in Italy and is rather understandably depressed by lack of financial rewards for past work/releases. Hope this pays a few bills. Also interesting band dynamic revealed; he didn't believe he was in same musical league as others, and felt his contributions were simple pop songs. I disagree on both counts ...
18. Bump!
19. What's not to be missed? Will be a week there from 11th - any insider insights gratefully received.
20. Other way for me, Michael... Though as a 71 owner -see avatar - I should know better than venture an opinion!
21. Thread derailed I know but RT's album v disappointing I felt. Wtf was that Guitar Heroes track all about?!
22. Hitting HK tomorrow but online gig guides are rubbish and club descriptions depressing. Any kind person have a recommendation as to where decent music can be had of an evening? Thank you!
23. Have just nosed round a couple in Tokyo and Kyoto on my first visit. Couple of impressions. The Japanese made Fenders seemed bargains at £300-350, inc Aerodynes. US Fenders, understandably, about four times as much. Large numbers of 'Lakland Japan Skylines'. And some good looking PB n JB copies called Photo Finish (or something like it) at around £75 apiece. Shame my case is full...
24. My intro to VM was the televised version of the show released circa 1974 as It's Too Late To Stop Now I've bought many albums and seen many shows but he never beat it... Also never seen the concert available on DVD (unless you know better).
25. Whistle test was never two hours, and in early days certainly used pre-recorded backing tapes (the Who, Lindisfarne come to mind).
