1.
Or did he win in 1993 and his inner snob suppressed ever since? I lost the fight ages ago, anyone who sounds good on a Squier is interested for being a freak.
Hmmmm interesting question
Raymondo of Basschat - fighting the inner snob since 1993.
2. Something weird happened when I tried to make this post.....move along....nothing to see here.
3.
when is a bass worth it? sometimes it just is. im of the school that you dont really need to pay more than say £500-600 for a high quality instrument, and while i can appreciate the asthetics of stupidly expensive woods and such i like a bass to be playable and i dont want to be scared of damaging it in the name of a good performance. however, my all time favorite bass is my old vester argus, it had great low action, it has distinctive looks and great tone but its not well balanced (sat down or stood up) its a heavy beast making long sets tiresome and its getting on now too. it does mean a lot to me though, in a time when i had little cash due to bieng a student i saw it in he shop and knew i couldnt afford it, in the end my mother put up the cash (mums are awesome). recently i have retired my vester due to the weight issues and the achievable action isnt what it once was. just under 2 years ago my mother passed away of cancer aged only 50, she always supported my love of music and with the money left to me i decieded to get something to remind me of her and something that she would have approved of, that i could also pass on to my children too. and so i ordered my xylem custom build, its going to be everything that my vester should have been with no comprimises and a tribute. i choose xylem because i think the basses he produces stand out from the pack and the carving style will compliment the vester shape and style perfectly. there was no price limit on this (and i genuinely never thought i would do that) and this bass will never be for sale. Its funny how my outlook on customs has changed and even though it has and i will cherish my new bass when it arrives i wont be teating it with kid gloves, its gonna get played, and any dings, marks, scratches it picks up along the way will be just another reminder of what it means to me.
^^ This is a fabulous thing to do! Twenty years ago my bass (a Honer mm copy) died during practice on a Tuesday night and I had a gig on the Friday.... I had always wanted a "proper" Fender Precision,a "made in the USA" one. At the time you could buy second hand ones for around £450 ...I managed to borrow £450 and went in search of my dream....nada....zip ....not a one for miles around! Eventually I swallowed my pride and on the Friday morning I bought a "made in Japan" 57 re-issue...Black and white,Maple neck. Took it out of the box and gigged with it . It's been my only bass ever since ,never done anything except change the strings and it's been fabulous (for me!). I had to fight my inner snob to buy it ....but I,m glad I did.
4. Damn! I always check the gig guide for your gigs and have never been able to make it ....this weekend I am not in Edinburgh with my girlfriend,I don't have to see the kids,I have money ..........but........... Yesterday I had to scrap the car and not sure I can afford one by Saturday! One day matey boy .....one day!
5. Not sure if it's rare but in 1975 I bought a new Arbiter "Ricken*****r copy ...sunburst,stereo...beautiful ! I paid £165.00 for it ,sold it a couple of years later for £125.00 saw it in a local shop ten years later for £125.00 (couldn't afford it!) I have only seen two others since ....one of which was green. The latest sighting was in photos sent to me by my friend for one in a shop for sale at £495...still can't afford it!
6. I used to play in a band that played every last Friday of the month at a local venue that was always packed..... I was stopped a few time whilst out in Nottingham and asked .."aren't you in The Diamonds?" (we didn't know there had been a band with a big hit in the fifties called The Diamonds) " We have seen you loads of times at the Vic"... "you're great!" .... .It used to lead to much leg pulling from friends and just a tinge of envy as it was usually a female that recognised me!!! In a different way... I was asked (twice) if I was Shaun Lock (before i put weight on I did look a lot like him ....now people in the street shout "shauns Dad"!)....It confused me because at the time I was living in Tenerife and had never heard of him. I did comment the second time..."If I was a successfull TV comic....what makes you think that I would be playing bass in a bar in Tenerife?"
7. I like it!...I have liked everything I have heard of his...an Australian barman at one of my locals used to play a lot of gotye...the big hit had been out for a couple of years before it made it to the UK. As usual though ....I haven't bought or downloaded anything....I really must update my music collection
8. Once agsain well done chaps...we have a new member
9.
If those new pictures turn out geniunely his, is that going to cause a problem for those who have bid on this?
He still hasn't answered my question about this thread, even though he has obviously checked his messages: someone has convieniently asked him about the photos and he has replied to them.
10. Not such a compact set up but...... Last year when a "mate" took 8 months to repair my Ampeg bass cab I used two full range pa speakers we had spare...you know the sort....heavy as hell ...15"" driver plus horn in each .....with my Ampeg BR head ....the sound was FABULOUS! in fact it prompted me to buy an extra 1x15 cab (A trace.... bought off the basschat forum) so I now have two 1x15" cabs as my rig albeit a tad easier on the back!
11.
The only problem with this is the seller now knows I'm the high bidder, not ideal but too late now.
Mmmm I didn't think of that Maybe somebody can bid £1,000,001..I don't know ...maybe someone who has an e-bay account name that is nothing like his basschat name of Raymondo
12.
I hope you lot are going to chip in if I win it!?
Yes I'll go halves with you....just send your £500,000 to my bank account in Nigeria and I will deal with paying for it.
13.
Only if we can have a Waistcoat Relay, where we all wear it for a gig, take a picture then pass it on!
Brilliant!
14. I have just asked a question ......."Can you explain this thread in a very well respected bass forum please (link sent too) /" UI don't expect an answer but at least they will know that we are on to them!
15. It's a great tune, fab bass line, but, is it only me that thinks there is no "feel" in that trevor Horn video? well his bass playing anyway! Oh I know it's perfect note picking and sounds spot on but it feels slightly mechanical to me... Maybe that's why he is a multi millionaire, recording songwriter/producer/performer and I only get to play at the Vollo when its closing down
16. We don't care that he got to play with some of the best drummers around do we fellow Basschatters? mutter, mutter, jammy b****** mutter ,lucky g**
17.
Yep, that's my take on it. isn't that what 'precision bass' was all about?
Doh! I have often wondered why it was called a"precision"....of course ....it all makes sense now!
18. Played lots of RAF,Army and Navy bases in the nineties ...here and in Germany...they can be great fun ....an Hawian beach party complete with sandy beach dance floor at Padeborn in DECEMBER springs to mind ...but hard work and yes you have to go by their rules . Not all bases have dress codes ...we found Sergeant mess gigs by far the worst for that sort of thing...including making you stay in a room the size of a broom cupboard except for when you are on stage, serving only crap sandwiches and warm cans of lager.... Officers mess...usually a real blast and great food and drink... other ranks fabulous audience great food and drink...and lots of help loading and unloading the van .....another gig at Padeborne:- a squaddie offered to let all five of us sleep on his bedroom floor as there was a cock up with hotels(surprise!!) It was TINY...we thanked him but stayed in the van untill early morning then made the Hotel manager let us into our pre paid rooms to have a short kip before moving on to the next town. Cautionary note........ We always went through an agent ....we were offered good money ..we thoughtt so at the time anyway ...£1000-£1500 per gig plus expenses but we found out after a year or two that the agent was charging £2500+ per gig and taking his cut out of our money too....He lost a lot of business when the guy that paid us at one gig found out he was being overcharged .... unfortunately so did we as he couldn't get back on the circuit ;-( Good luck and ENJOY!
19. That was awesome! I can only echo everyone elses' praise.....you deserve all the good things that are coming your way!
20. Not sure ...are these cool? ...you tell me... Marquee Moon ...Television 12" single .....and I have the album. Camebert Electrique ...Gong .....1st 50p album on Virgin Cool to me ....Hogwash ....Groundhogs,first Album I ever bought, original tripple fold sleeve ....I thought Pete cruickshanks' Zematis bass was the coolest looking bass ever!!
21. Last night was absolutely amazing! Jam packed full of people just to see us .. .as mentioned elsewhere it was a one off reunion of a Stereophonics tribute band ..... we were helping raise funds for the landlady who is leaving after 17 years due to Punch Taverns being money grabbing swindling ar*h*l*s. We played really well to say we haven't played together for four years and the whole night was a "love fest"....the pub sold out of beer....no draught lager or cider...no bottled cider or "alcopops"...just a few bottles of bud left in the fridge. The landlady was in tears....of joy... and insisted on paying us even though we tried to not take a fee....loved every minute of it!
22. Debs. Well done ,so pleased it went well for you.Let me know when you are next playing! Kev It wasn't as bad as you seem to think mate....not many punters in but apparently it had been full on Thursday due to some celebration or other and it was the first weekend for ages that you could count on the weather being good so ...as usual...half of Nottingham would be at the East coast!. Enjoy tonight and keep letting us know when you are playing ....I enjoy the band. Big Red Sorry buddy but laziness got the better of me and I stayed at the Vollo....also there was not much of a crowd so I thought I would support Kev. Glad you had a good one again.......I will look out for future gigs ...Ironic really I am usually in Scotland at the weekend!
23. MMM I'll try to master the art of being in two places at once....I will go to the Vollo to see Kev with the Nathan wall band for their first set as they are out of town then get back to the Jam cafe later and hope that you are on late....say 10.00-10.30 ish? I need to go to the vollo as that is where I am gigging on Saturday and I need to borrow a guitar for one song...friends should be there that i can ask. I don't have a band at the moment as I spend half the week in Edinburgh and half in Nottingham . Saturday is a one off reunion of the old Stereophonics tribute band I played in as a favour to the landlady as she liked us....it's also my birthday treat to myself as I am 56 on Sunday! If I get waylaid and miss the Terrortones I will make sure I catch the next one .....I have loved all your videos so far!
24.
Would have looked in out of curiosity as I've still never seen them live but I'm treading the boards at some pub or other on Friday night myself.
I'm treading the boards at that very same venue on Saturday night I'll pop in and say hi on Friday.
