1. He probably wouldn't thank me for this but for me one of the best bass players i have ever seen and(or) heard is a fellow Nottingham guy named Wayne Evans.... His band in the Seventies..Gaffa... were awesome. He then set up a fab outfit called Marcel Marceau Sound... He plays bass and sings lead vocals (the vocals in a very distinctive Nottingham accent) and he amazes me every time I see him... He has done many things over the thirty to forty years i have known of him...I can't say known him because although he recognises me when we meet he has never been a close friend....check out the last pedestrians for his current ...and fabulous...upright bass material.
2. There was (is?) locally a band called ...no way sis ...guess who they were a tribute too! Whilst on holiday in Devon...Barnstaple ..in 2005 with my mates we saw a gig advertised at one of the pubs for "the Food fighters"..we went along expecting a tribute band ....... They turned out to be just a regular pub rock covers band ...they were fabulous though and we had a great night!
3. Thanks Xilddx I did know the difference but wouldn't have expressed it so eloquently!.... I just checked on the "news" I had heard about HIV and found this... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/03/2-men-cured-of-hiv-lymphoma-stem-cell-transplant_n_3540295.html So yes there may be a cure ...but it's expensive and a bit impractical......still a little hope is much better than none!
4.
Tell me what exactly? As I understand it, the dude has got AIDS. Not exactly a condition that can be cured by a doctor giving you a prescription, although these days it can be managed by drugs & a healthy lifestyle, etc... http://m.classicrock...-how-i-survive/
As I read it RATM was being humourous.....Hopefully he's free of all that now.... Obviously AIDS is a horrible thing to suffer from and everybody wishes Andy (or Mr Fraser to me as I do not know him personally, unfortunately.) all the very best. I didn't know he was suffering from AIDS and I assume RATM didn't either otherwise I am sure he wouldn't have made the joke. Incidentally, I heard a news report the other day that said nobody had to die from being HIV possitive these days as drugs had been developed to prevent it......I hope I have remembered that correctly....If that's true then it's great news indeed. I genuinely meant no offence Peteb and understand that your knowledge of his condition would mean that you would miss the pun. Like many on here I grew up loving Andy Frasers bass lines and can still now,,just about, manage a passable version of his lines to Mr Big from the live album....something that gives me great pleasure! I wish him well. Ray
5. Hopefully he's free of all that now
I'm afraid that you can never be free of AIDS - hopefully he is managing it as well as possible...
Mr Machine.... should I tell him or will you?
6. I couldn't decide where this thread fits....Gigs ? Off topic? or here so I thought I would let you all decide! I am going to be playing my only gig of the year (so far) next Saturday at the Old Volunteer in Carlton Nottingham. We are reforming our Stereophonics tribute band for one gig to help the landlady and her husband at this fabulous Nottingham music venue. Because I live half the week in Edinburgh and half in Nottingham I left my old band and now cannot find the time to join another....I miss playing....but don't know what to do about it. That is one reason behind this post ...anyone any ideas? The second point is we are playing for free to help raise money for the landlady because they are a victim of the Punch Taverns method of doing business (all the other pub holding companies are as bad!) After !7 years of struggling they are being hounded out and charged an extortionate amount for delapidation, rent and beer bills..... my point is .... I have met many people who have fallen foul of this practice....and it is often a music venue that gets closed down ...does anyone have experience of these companies actually helping music venues? It seems to me that they all want pseudo restaurants and are happy to destroy the traditional pub.
7. I have to get to East midlands Airport for my flight to edinburgh at 11.50am ....I hope all of you will be there early!
8. Glad you enjoyed yourself Debs,I hope Phil did too (ooo look at me ,sounds like I know you both ) Seriously though you both deserve some "me time" and what can be better than having a blast on the bass! Thinking of you Ray
9. Skank old chap, has anyone ever told you that sometimes you can be quite amusing?
10. I clicked on reply to topic..... and words fail me...... WOW! Just WOW!!!!
11. I missed the rant ......but whatever it was about ,well done for facing up to your mistakes and apologising in public. I don't know you ,butI would be happy to get to know anyone who behaves so respectfully. Regards Ray
12. On Skanks theme....how great is nature?! ...My back yard/garden was a mass of weeds and rubbish when i moved in last year. I went to town with the most powerfull weedkiller i could find and it cleared EVERYTHING...... I now have half a dozen Daffodils fighting their way through the wilderness
13. I enjoy all aspects of Basschat. I haven't sold anything on here but would be happy to pay to do so..... My one experince of purchasing from here was very pleasant and friendly As for the bad vibes...I just ignore the topics that end up with arguements ....to me it's a bit like The Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 ....a waste of time ....one person for something ,one against...and no resolution!....The only difference is Dr Dave usually comes along and cheers me up Keep up the good work guys!
14.
An appalling crime, disgusting!
Somebody had to acknowledge your keen eye sir!
15.
Not probable at all, I think. I think it's more probable that the key word is "guitar". As in: "How sad must one be to choose exactly a guitar?" best, bert
That's the way I read it ...I thought it was sarcasm at it's best, but maybe,as he has not been back to explain,it was a troll
16. That is awesome ......he must have been some guy! Well done everybody involved.
17. Having never thought about this until this thread appeared....... I was surprised to realise that I have played in (at least) ten English counties, two Welsh, played half a dozen military camps in Germany and lived and played in Tenerife! Makes me sound quite good doesn't it?.......... I don't feel it My actual ambition ,once I realised that Burke Shelly wasn't ever going to leave Budgie , Was to play the main stage at Rock City in Nottingham. I managed it by cheating ....we did some charity gigs there ....but hey ,It was still a blast having 1500 people cheering every song! I will make sure that non of you get the wrong impression here........ Almost all of the above was achieved playing in either covers or tribute bands
18. I used to struggle to sing and play anything other than a simple root note bass line ....... I then played for a living for a couple of years ...4/5 gigs a week and I remember vividly one night realising that I could sing and play...we were playing Lying eyes by the Eagles at the time ( ) I then proceeded to think up a variation to the bass line ...and then drifted off to think about what I was going to cook for supper...and felt really pleased with myself "finaly I've cracked this bass playing malarky"..... Now that I am back playing one or two gigs a month I fail miserably at singing bv and playing at the same time
19. In all seriousness?!....you go back to number two offering to sell at 1800 and tell number one ...thanks for the offer I'll get back to you if I don't sell it.....then sit back and wait for number three!
20. Yes I remember all sorts of things from many moons ago...including all the words to a 1977 Rubettes song that was on Radio 2 today I did see Hawkwind at Reading festival in the Seventies......does that get me off the hook?
21.
First time for me at the other of the two monthly 'residencies' the band I've hooked up with play. This is the H2O bar in Hucknall, Notts. Very modern one room sports bar, big TV's everywhere showing football etc. Painfully loud in house music system. Had to laugh when we were asked to turn down for the second set (which we did) then they put the in house music on again until closing time which was far louder than we'd been even in the first set. Tiny stage area to set up again. I was considering suggesting me bringing the midi pedals to fill out the sound but on the evidence of the 3 gigs I've done so far I doubt they play stages big enough to sensibly accomodate them. Oh well, their loss. Also due to the frontman wanting to hog centre stage I was continually being shoved closer and closer to one of the PA speakers until I was hitting the headstock againt it while also being blinded by an upfacing LED. Got so distracted with it I muffed the solo to My Generation.
The joys of playing with the Nathan Wall band Only Joking !....I have always enjoyed playing with them, the last time(xmas eve at the Vollo) it was the guitarists first ever gig with him,the drummers first for three months and my first since I had played twice with his band two years previously!!! He gets lots of work so must be doing something right.
22.
Did someone mention waistcoats? Look, it was a blues rock band OK?...
That's the Lion Inn at Basford and I claim my free pint of Bass
23.
Nice story - I hope it progresses well. I've been playing in two bands for the past 3-4 years but there are also various 'bits on the side' going on - of the musical type! Two of the guys in one band regularly play acoustic duos locally. Myself and a guitarist from each band have jammed a few times together. One of the guitarist also does a sort of comedy uke act and I've played on, recorded and produced a CD of his songs. It all adds a bit of variety.
In a similar vein.... I was in a five piece band when i lived in Tenerife I also was in a duo with the singer....and.... a duo with the drummer (he played guitar).......and........ a duo with the keyboard player....and.... A trio with the drummer and the keyboard player... The drummer played solo(as a guitarist obviously )....so did the singer ... The singer and the lead guitarist played as a duo....I occcaisionally "guested "with them ... we all played with "other" musicians in various line ups ..... It was what we did to earn a living ..... It also was great fun..... It also lead to me being able to play a bass line ....think about a new bass line to the same song...and then playing it ...and singing ( well I called it singinig ).....and wondering what I was going to have for supper ....all at the same time!!! All of this ot drivel is just to say .....go for it ....what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
24. It sounds like you are thrilled to bits.....and that's what counts.....Lifes too short to worry about stroppy singers Enjoy yourself. Best of luck Ray
25.
and tobacco burst vinyl flooring to boot , of which I had the same pattern but in white with grey diamonds.
Didn't everyone have that pattern flooring?....mine was white/grey too Oh ...........it's not me either!
