1.
Got a call last night at 8:20 from band leader that apparently we had a gig! Perhaps if he'd actually updated the band's google diary more recently than last November or maybe just told me, as he had evidently done to other band members. First night using a dep guitarist that the outgoing (paternity leave) gtr player found and said he 'thought would be OK' after they had met a couple of times for a short jam. I was amazed that a formal rehearsal hadn't been booked to make sure he would be OK in full band context as he'll be standing in for a couple of months. Sure enough he was woefully unprepared despite having had 2 months to learn the set. One rehearsal during that time would have made this abundantly clear but hey what do I know? So after band leader made some smart arse comment about my bass tone during the first set I duly handed in my resignation at the half time interval. I was planning to do it at tonight's gig anyway so just brought it a day forward, 2 years was always going to be about my limit with this one. Big sigh of relief. On to the next project!
As you say Kev.....it was only a matter of time. I think you deserve a "long service" medal lasting two years! Good luck with a new project, let me know when you gig. Do you ever do the jam session on a Sunday? All the best ( I'll keep my phone turned off just in case
2.
I have to pitch in here as I regularly use my 1974 HH IC100 and 1x15 cabinet for pub gigs, there is no hiss at all and I have never needed more volume. Cost effective too as I have used this setup since 1977, though the speaker has been replaced with a 300W Celestion since. Back on topic I also have a 1972 Hiwatt Custom 50 which is as loud and clean as anyone could need and sounds good too, I tend to leave it at home as it is awkward to lug around and too valuable to get knocked about.
Never mind all this old amp and speakers nonsense Why is a newbie impersonating our very own KevB
3.
My first proper amp was a Laney Klipp. From what I can gather, they were more popular among bass players than guitarists. I did eventually destroy it but I suspect that has more to do with me not knowing anything about valve amps at the time and not being very careful with what I plugged it into.
My first amp was a Laney Klip 100watt too. I connected it to a Carlsbro 2x15 cab.....soooo heavy ....and I used to have to take it upstairs to my bedroom because Mum wouldn't let me keep it downstairs I had an Arbiter bass, one of those we can't discuss on here that was "stereo" ...I thought I was so original and cool running one lead into the distortion "Klip" channel and one into the clean channel It worked brilliantly so my vote goes for ....yes.....you can!
4.
Well, tonight's gig was a world of difference to last weeks gig. Last week we played to a sell out theatre, this week the grand total of 11 people!!! We only just made enough to pay the sound man! However, those 11 people were incredibly enthusiastic and cheered loudly Also being such an "intimate" gig, we were able to chat to them all individually Two of the 11 played bass, and were incredibly complementary and were very impressed that I played fretless. You win some, you lose some. But we still played our all for those 11 punters!! A few weeks until the next gig now.
Rock and Roll hey Debs? Livin' the dream I have often had that experience.......once played to four people....but soemtimes they are great nights because of the intimacy. Great to hear that The Welsh Floyd are doing well though Debs.....keep on keeping on
5. I do not have much experience of big stages....large "working mens clubs" mostly, unless you count a tank transporter as "big"....My all time favourite though is Rock City in my home town. The monitor engineer being an absolute genius....the sound was awesome. So my vote goes to Big stage if the sound is good
6. I am sure there are a few "pro" players on basschat ....wateroftyne has gigged with Marknopfler ...how much more "Pro" can you get ( I for one am very envious!) I know that's not what you asked Nigel ( I know your name via osmosis rather than any real friendship so I apologies if that is too personal ) I think that the example earlier of spacechick being helped by Guy Pratt is a good example of what the Pro/named player can bring to the forum. I would also be interested in anything they can say about how they got the breaks and some "on the road" stories would be fun ...but maybe that's a little too trivial for here and best left to a book or blog. This is the second thread that has alluded to a compression thread being contensious....I must seek it out .....I have no idea what compression does
7. I used to be in a Function band ...we played parties for the BBC and we played lots of Forces bases ....in the UK and Germany. We got them though an agent that held a showcase at the St Athan (spelling?) airforce base near Newquay....sorry but my memory is terrible and we played so many bases that I get confused as to what they were called and where they were! We drove all the way from Nottingham to do 15 mins. we had a poster and that was it we "sold" ourselves in 15 mins and then packed down and drove all the way back. That was in the late nineties, I think now you need a web site, recordings, videos etc ....non of which my current band has ...I wish we could do a showcase
8. Another "big thanks to you" from me ! I played my own small part and was more than happy to do so ....but you had the idea....again well done. All of us on basschat can be proud of the efforts made and the money raised...... .Two years...jeez it seems like yesterday when I said I would join in when you first asked about setting it up.Then I left the band and couldn't take part in the initial run of gigs!
9. Saturday night was a "private party" at the Tally ho in Edgbaston Birmingham.I was expecting the enormous old pub you usually get when playing in brum but no, ,just to confuse me and have me driving up and down the Pershore road, it was a social club tucked behind a quite horrible construction alongside some playing fields! To be fair it was nice enough inside, the staff were great and it was a spacious stage for a change! The night went really well ,dance floor full at the appropriate times and they even laughed when I did my "this is our version,of Metallica's version.of Thin Lizzy's version of an old Irish tune ....yes they even lapped up "All right now" I managed to deflect the drunken young lady that announced, after our second song, that she was a "really good drummer" and asked "can I play the drums?" by telling her that she should ask a little later....she kept asking and I stalled her right up to the final encore and then beat a hasty retreat to the "dressing room" All in all ....the usual night was had by all
10. Well done 'Shell long may your career continue.....oh and if you can persuade any of your admirers to bring along a sister or two to The White Horse next time I'd appreciate it
11.
That's nonsense. Your formative years and mine are completely different. Pub bands aren't homogenous. I have never played Sex On Fire and you have probably never played Birdland (I have; in a pub in Surrey). People come at this from different angles and the idea that everyone should know certain stuff is nonsense. My first band did 2 covers, Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin and Silver Machine by Hawkwind. Never played them again. I was 45 before I played Mustang Sally and 48 before I ever played 'Good TImes' or 'Ain't Nobody' This idea that there are 'required' standards for pub bands is nonsense. The implication is that, if you don't know 'Son Of A Preacher Man' you haven't 'paid your dues' or aren't properly 'schooled'!! The reality is more like 'Do you know -------'? 'No'. 'OK, Let's play something else'. 'O.K'
I think that's a bit harsh. The op asked about depping and the list that jonesthebass gave out contained most of the songs that the majority of bands on the pub circuit play. There will always be bands that don't play the obvious songs and there are bands that play soul, country, folk, all sorts of genres including jazz in all it's forms. They will certainly get gigs if they are good enough. However having played around the country, in Germany and in Tenerife I can tell you that that list would equip you with enough knowledge to dep in many many bands. I am sure that Jonesthebass didn't mean you HAD to play those songs to do the pub circuit ,just that THE MAJORITY of bands out there play them. I saw a Swiss band playing in an "Irish pub" in Dubrovnik with an Eu playing bassist ...and they did Sex on fire!
12.
Ooh, Don't Stop Believin might work if we can somehow get past the piano intro. My brother suggested 'I wanna know what love is'. Cracking song, but might be a bit too ballad-y? Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming in! Alex
We are a guitar bass drums set up (sometimes two guitars, bass and drums) but our lead guitarist has a weird midi thing attached to his guitar that enables him to produce any sound he wants ....keyboard,brass etc .... but even if you play the keys part on a non processed guitar the audience don't seem to care ....they just love belting out the words!.
13. We finish with Journey's "Don't stop believin'" ...introduced as, "A song from Glee", which always gets a moan. We play it in "D" ...same as the "Rock of Ages" version, and slip in U"'s "With or without you" (basically the same chord structure) before ending back on don't stop. It all sounds corny I know but everybody we have played this to sings along at the top of their voices and end up screaming for more ,so a guaranteed encore!
14.
It's been brought to my attention that this document is copyright material and is for sale elsewhere online, so I can't post a public link on a forum to download it for free without being in contravention of that copyright. Apologies all round!
Bl**dy John Hall gets everywhere.
15. Got mine Thanks. It looks very interesting.
16.
oh dear. then it's as I feared. he's a smugger. and my God... it's already spread to you. smuggers are a rare breed, cleverly disguised as creatives. cousin to the more common egosapians, both seek attention. remember: only smuggers truly believe they're owed it; the egosapian of course overcompensating for tiny, almost insignificant, genitalia.
I have been a member of this site for (i think! ) four years ,the above is the worst example of obnoxious trolling I have seen ......either that or your sense of humour passes us all by! I will not be taking any notice of any of your posts in future; i am sure that will have little effect on your massive ego.....I wonder what that is making up for;-)
17. Hi Steve ....just noticed this thread! I do not know which model they used but old friends of mine in Tenerife used a Peavey PA that looked very much like one of those for their quiz nights and singing to backing tracks type thing.... I thought it sounded horribly tinny.......may not have been the 5000 of course but it was enough to put me off anything like it! Cheers Ray
18. Virgin media banned it!.....must resist the obvious.......Doh!.....nope couldn't resist it.
19. Spoof? ......I certainly hope so! either that or their sense of humour may be a bit strange
20. Crikey I didn't know these places still existed The last time I played a pub with strippers around here was 1975
21. What worries me is,If you needed an ambulance at the Plainsman, what is in store at the next H2O gig?!!! ;-)
22.
What do you want? Some old crooning bastard like Paul Rogers on it or summat? Not digging it is cool but saying it's crap because you can't understand it is unclassy. I wasn't that keen on the solo to be honest, I liked the tune though.
That's a bit harsh.I usually like your contributions ,so maybe you are having a bad day. He doesn't say it's "crap" just that he "wouldn't call it good"...I agree,I don't like it and I didn't like the solo either....I like Paul Rogers (well the two "OLD" bands he sang with)...doesn't make me right and you wrong, just means we like different music.
23. Hotel, petrol, eleventeen pints of Wadsworth 6x and a kebab...yes ...quite costly but well worth it...no the expense will be when i give in to the GAS created by hearing (and most importantly lifting!) Steves' Barefaced cab Oh I get the tone and sound I like from my own rig....but it weighs more than a house....that Orange amp and Barefaced compact rig sounded awesome and can be carried in one hand ....oh yes I have been converted....just the small matter of being able to afford the upgrade now! Does that answer your question Steve? Great gig ,thoroughly enjoyed the song selection ...and indeed the beer and Kebab.
24. Well I bought mine 24 years ago and played it "straight out of the box" never had it looked at ,don't know anything about "setting up a bass" and I have managed fine.I have pretty much always used Rotosound strings 45-105....tried Elites a few years back, didn't like them. Not much help I am afraid ...but you did ask
25. Very very tired still today....fibromyalgia is a b**ch!...still I should mention our gigs as KevB drove all the way to Birmingham and bought the lovely Seashell to see us at The white Horse in Harborne on Friday night. I thought it went well and was a busy night for the pub ......so they were happy....we got booked back for two Fridays next year and three Saturdays at the other pub they own in Cradley Heath so I assume that they were very happy We had a small gang of bikers come to see us who also really enjoyed our set and took details to book us at their festival next year Saturday saw us play at the Polish Center in Nottingham ...a private party ...big stage....very loud disco ...lots of drunken party goers....including the Hostess who kept coming on stage grabbing my mike and swearing at her guests to "come and dance you miserable f***ers!" she even managed to completely destroy my mic stand, these young forty year old party throwers really need to grow up That aside (she is a friend and was very apologetic the next day!) the gig went well ...dep drummer was awesome ( knew he would be...KevB knows who I am talking about ) and I have become a bit of a celebrity among my group of friends who had never seen me play before. great weekend ....paying for my silly dance moves and my rock star poses now though
