Spouses, do they like or hate your instruments?
Graham replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
The wife likes my basses, she thinks they look attractive on a stand, however we're pushed for space at the moment so there's not really anywhere to have one out in the living room and whilst the kids are probably old enough now to leave it be, baby number three is on the way, so they'll be living in their cases for the next few years still. She liked my old Lakland Duck Dunn the most, which I can understand, it was a very pretty bass. -
I take a backup 90% of the time, unless there's a space issue in the car. If there's a decent sized stage I'll have it on a stand, but as it's a four string and my main bass is a five it wont get used unless there's a problem with the five - not happened yet. Quite often the stage space will be small, so it'll stay in it's case either off stage somewhere or in the car. Only reason I bring a backup is we do a lot of private functions and it seems bad form to have to stop the gig whilst I re-string if someone's paid good money for us to perform.

South East Bass Bash No.10, Surrey, Saturday 24th September 2016

Does anyone have a Spector Euro LX 5 or NS5XL they could bring? Really want to give one a go -

Pre-Phil Anselmo Pantera had a blinder

That looks great in white, not seen a Status that colour before. I do love the idea of a single piece instrument with no neck joint, seems like a way to a really good low B.

Paying Duty/vat on goods from Europe, Thomann's
Graham replied to funkgod's topic in General Discussion
I doubt I'll be buying much from Thomann until such a time as Sterling recovers against the Euro. Pound for pound it's quite possibly cheaper buying from UK retailers at the moment.
I found that when I bought a GK head last month, went to Thomann assuming it would be cheapest before checking against some UK suppliers and ended up buying from Dawsons as they were the cheapest vendor who had them in stock. -
... the day I got caught! (Stingray preamp battery)
Graham replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
but they had a non-alcohol one that actually tasted really really good (from Brewdog brewery)... one to keep an eye on!
I'll look out for that, I'm really getting into non-alcoholic beer. This thread is a good reminder to change the battery in my L2500; I went to do it the other night, but realised I'd used my spare in a smoke alarm instead, will buy a new one on the way home tonight. -
not quite NBD: Matt Freeman Precision to Jazz conversion
That's a very elegant looking bass.
That's exactly the right word for it. -
That fan fret Ibanez only goes down to 35.5" on the low B, rather than the 37" of most Dingwalls, so in the future it might be worth checking out the cheaper Combustion range. That said, you sound happy with your Ray, so all good there

I've always thought of GK having a pretty distinctive sound - clear, punchy a bit gritty, but maybe I'm just thinking of a solid state sound.
I'm still struggling with who this is marketed at. GK lovers will have a GK head. If they have a GK head, other than a couple of superficial extras, what does this pedal offer extra? The Sansamp pedals make much more sense as not everyone who loves the Ampeg sound wants an Ampeg head, but the same doesn't seem to work for GK. Certainly, I can't hear a bass tone and have the ability to blind identify the GK sound.
I'd disagree and say the GK sound is pretty distinctive, Duff/Flea for example certainly don't sound like they're playing through an SVT. I'd really like one for home use, it has everything I want for rehearsal including a tuner in one box, however at that price I won't be getting one anytime soon. I am surprised that they've gone into more depth on the compressor than the drive, as I don't think any of the GK heads have onboard compression? But do have drive/boost.
Also has a bass boost on the push/pull on the active stack. Pull bright on the volume/tone when in active mode. Four options regarding bass boost frequency plus level selected internally. Yes it is a split coil and in this case with Alnico magnets rather than the ceramic I normally use.
Are your multicoil pickups cermaic?
-
It's in the right position - also if you lift the pickguard you'll see that the NG2 & the Combustion (starting from when the NG was released) both use the same body so you can move the 'front' pickup in to jazz position to see what that sounds like - routes for both basses are under the plate! Cool eh!!
That's remarkably civilised of Dingwall
-
I think the NG2 would be close, the bridge pickup looks like it's in the right position, it's bolt-on, but another one I'd like to give a go
-
But if they're playing them straight from the tune...can't see any major issues.
Ah, the lie all bands tell deps/newbies
-
We play a lot of those, they're a lot more fun to play than listen to - like you I'd avoid a lot of them in real life, but am happy to play them to an audience who wants to hear them. I'd say do it, if only for while the Mrs is on maternity and then see how you feel in six to nine months. If they're bringing in that kind of wage per gig it shouldn't be hard for them to find someone else to step up if you decide to call it a day.
Yup, hipshot on the E string for me too, instant swap and ready for 'Sweet Child' or 'Fool for your Lovin'...Ofc I actually learnt the songs that way rather than on my 5iver.
Oh yeah, I had to learn the songs three times: First on my spare bass tuned down a semi-tone a la the original recording Next drop D as above, so I could use one bass all night. Then I bought a five string, so re-learned them again
-
You could do the Eb songs on a four string in drop D. I used to do that for Sweet Child Of Mine and Basket Case as I realised the only note I was missing in standard tuning was the low Eb. It takes a bit of mental re-jigging to do that, but probably easier to do it for just those songs than for the entire set on a flat five string.
Though I understand why you might imagine a 35" scale is better for a low B, I've seen enough threads on here that indicate a well-made 34" scale bass will give you a great low B - it often seems that build quality is a better indicator than scale length regarding how good it sounds. Have you tried a through neck Stingray?
Yeah, I've seen those threads just pondering on what might make a really good five string, and whether anyone had built a standard bass with those features. It looks like finding a through neck with the pickup in the Stingray position is the biggest problem, apart from the neck through Ray and that Warwick P-Nut there don't seem to be many out there. I'd love to have a go on a neck through Stingray 5, but there aren't many over here.
-
87% of the scale length if I remember correctly. What's your budget?
No budget sadly, just window shopping; but I took a look at your website and there's some nice stuff there, and very keenly priced too
-
I'd assume on a 35" scale you'd move the pickup so that it was proportinally the same distance from the 12th fret as on a 34
-
Cheers guys, not just me that can't think of one that ticks all those boxes then I am surprised that there aren't more basses that use the Stingray pickup location.
-
Does such a thing exist off the peg? 5 string Single H, or at least 1 H in the MM spot through neck 35" I figure a Stingray neck through is probably the closest, but is 34" - anything else out there?
