Build Your Own Bass Guitar Kit
spinynorman replied to Hobbayne's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
So, how long before we see a load of badly sprayed P-bass copies with wonky shaped headstocks on eBay as "custom build"? -
Another good looking cheap bass - new "Sue Ryder"???
spinynorman replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
Interesting that someone's trying to revive the old "made in the Ibanez factory" brand Antoria. I was wondering if a Dimarzio Model One would go in the Jag shaped black one. Still there.

Culture is a massive factor obviously. For example, blue men can't sing the whites.

Fingerstyle or Pick.. are your fingers the talkers?
spinynorman replied to ToneDeluxe's topic in General Discussion
Pick. It's all about rhythm for me, just can't get my fingers to hold a steady beat. Never had a problem getting any tone I want with a pick. Can't slap with it, obviously, which bothers me not at all. If all the picks in the world disappeared, I'd use my thumb. -
I downloaded a couple of Deerhoof tracks off the Gibson web site. It's not just the name that's odd.

This looks like the same black respray as the Ripper I bought from Ash. In which case, it's a simple, though messy job to take the black off with paint stripper, leaving the original clear nitro, which the stripper won't touch. After that it really just needs polishing up and you've got a very nice natural Grabber at a bargain price.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
spinynorman replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Sorry, this has gone over my head. I can only see tiny pictures of everything except the first photo. The brand is listed as "Cort Kay" in the listing, but not the title. It looks a lot like a Korean Cort made, but Kay branded, guitar that sold a year or more ago, and hence I presumed it was in the same range. Is it not?
I had a Korean-made Kay in that shape, but the body was a lot nicer looking than that one. Which doesn't mean anything, as far as where it was made by whom. I don't know where he gets the idea triple brass dot inlays are a Fujigen indication - my definitely-Korean Kay had them, and if anything it seems to be an indication of Cort. -

Haven't seen one of these for a bit. Azumi Victory -
One of them has got a bit closer to reality http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=140569575784

In "Escaping the Delta" Elijah Wald makes a pretty strong case that the whole blues-oppression-slavery idea was a myth created by American folklorists and that most of the old blues players were as up for the contemporary equivalent of Mustang Sally as anyone. "Born under a Bad Sign" was written by Booker T, of Green Onions fame. As the Bonzos said, can blue men sing the whites?

First time shipping, need some advice please?
spinynorman replied to SignsOfDelirium_bassist's topic in Bass Guitars
If you book with Interparcel or one of the other agents that's been mentioned, you get a choice of services from different couriers, so you can either pick the cheapest, the fastest or just one you've heard good things about. They'll come and pick up the parcel from you, which is good, because you don't have to haul it down the PO, but may be tricky if there's no-one at home during the day. On the other hand, most work places have couriers in and out all the time, so probably won't mind one turning up for you. The reason the agents are cheaper - and that going direct to ParcelForce or the PO is more expensive - is the agents generate a huge volume and can negotiate better rates. If you went direct to DHL or UPS as an individual, that would be more expensive too. It's also possible that couriers are a bit more worried about the service they give through an agent, as being dropped by Interparcel et al would be quite significant. -
Lowering the action on a Epiphone Jack Casady Bass?
spinynorman replied to basskit_case's topic in Repairs and Technical
I honestly can't see the point of the Hipshot replacement, I've got 2 Rippers with the original 3-points and they've got the best action of any basses I've had. And intonation is perfect. The Talkbass link looks like good advice. A couple of extra tips would be - use a wide-bladed screwdriver, otherwise you'll wreck the slots; if you're having trouble turning the screws, slacken off the strings a bit, and make sure you are adjusting each screw a bit at a time in turn; if the saddles fall out, they are helpfully numbered 1-4 underneath (at least on my Ripper they are); keep the front of the bridge higher than the back, otherwise the rear posts may pull out. -
I used to have problems hearing myself till I got a Markbass combo. Now I can stand in front of it, behind it, beside it or on top of it and it all sounds good. Also sounds a lot better at lower volumes than the Hartke head I had before.

Thanks for the reminder, what a great song that is. Just spent many happy minutes playing along with Youtube clips, and it doesn't strike me as a song where historical accuracy matters a lot, it's the feel. Well, if you're in a Govt Mule tribute band maybe. Otherwise, I'd abuse your substance of choice and play along. It'll come to you.

More to the point, who's going to dip Happy Jack in honey and throw him to the lesbians? Could be the Youtube event of the year.
Likewise, I may be wrong but I assumed they were cheap, good quality copies of Western brands but essentially flouting copyright/patents. Not something that should be encouraged in a legitimate bass forum IMHO Besides I prefer the semi-clad ladies in the figleaves ad
Semi-clad ladies in figleaves? I might need to turn Adblock off.

I've put fake logos on a couple of basses in the past, but never been totally happy about it. Maybe ok if you never take it out of the house, but if you gig with it and someone says "that's a nice ..." and wants to talk about it, then what? You either admit it isn't, which possibly makes them feel a bit stupid, or carry on the deception and hope they don't notice anything. That's just how I feel about it for me, I've got no problem with whatever you want to do.

At least they haven't listed one "rare, collectible" string for £250. Bert Weedon, though. What a legend. Without "Play in a Day" I would never have mastered "She'll be Coming Round the Mountain" and would still be struggling to find Dm.

Sold - Fender Squier Korea Jazz Bass 1998 - sold
spinynorman replied to Al Heeley's topic in Basses For Sale
Unless some kind person saves this bass pretty quickly, it's heading for the Breaker's this weekend. Parts will be dissembled and scattered over ebay. Grab yourself a huge bargain and save the bass from a shocking fate!!
Aside from the shameless emotional blackmail why would you need to part it out? I watched at least one Korean Squier on eBay a while ago and IIRC it made reasonable money. I would have thought you'd get at least what you're asking here. -
I've had a CMD121H for about a year now. It's handled everything I've thrown at it, from quite big venues to very small. Two things I've noticed relating to small venues - with the Ashdown Mag and Harke HA3500 rigs I had before they sounded good at reasonably high volume, but at low volume I couldn't get a sound I liked out of them. With the MB, it sounds just as good at any volume level. Second thing is, in a small space I sometimes have to stand beside it, and it sounds just as good from there. I've never used anything to raise it or angle it, but never had a problem hearing it. My one small gripe is the stupid luggage strap on the top which makes it difficult to carry, even though it is light. My Nemesis cab, which cost a third of the price, has three recessed handles in just the right places. Why can't other makers do that?

Interesting that he has time for all these proprietary techniques for aging the hardware, but didn't bother to get the marker pen off the case, although, of course, he thinks it will come off easily. If any of you are interested, I am developing my own techniques for aging basses, which includes soaking the parts overnight in a bowl of my own urine (patent applied for) and smearing the fretboard with a compound I've been harvesting from between my toes. I'll be marketing these basses as "Organically Reliced".
