Irritating terms that non-musos use...
spinynorman replied to Ian Savage's topic in General Discussion
Suddenly I'm getting ideas for mic/mike checks. "Orifice .... Nibble ..... Nancy Boy Potter ...." -
A while back there was a butterscotch MIJ 51 P that had been modded for jazz pickups. At the time I thought it was an odd thing to do. To me it looks all wrong, but that's just me.

Apparently, if you like this, you'll also like Verdi's Requiem. -

Ibanez Artist 2625B. Starting price looks a bit steep to me. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ibanez-Artist-Bass-1976-/370502087751?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item5643a53447 -
I've got 2 Rippers, one maple/ebony and one alder/maple. I like them because they're comfortable to play, but I know a lot of people don't like how they sound. I found problems with the electrics on both of mine, and that didn't help. I can now get a sound I like out of them, but on one position of 4 on the pickup selector. They're pretty complex electrically, without delivering much usable variety. IMHO.
Indeed I would - Interparcel from UK to France quotes £18 + vat + insurance. Unfortunately it wont tell me what the insurance would be untill I finish the transaction, but it shouldnt be much.
You might be surprised, I got caught in the past on insurance. For example, bass I recently bought from within the UK and arranged the courier myself through Interparcel - bass value ~£400, shipping cost £11, insurance £10 - total with VAT £25. You can check if you have the address, just cancel out before the credit card details.
Yes. One of my all-time favourite albums is Gary Moore's 'Blues for Greenie'. A lot of it is stripped-back guitar, bass and drums and Andy Pyle is on the money all the way through. I wonder what he's doing now that GM has gone upstairs to play with Phil Lynott again.
http://www.therollband.com/ I'm guessing the other Pyles listed are his kids. A while ago I saw Brian Auger, he was also in a band with his kids. I'm sure it's very nice for them - and they are good performers - but it's all a bit too cozy somehow.

I bet myself a quid no one would mention Harvey Brooks. And I won. Electric Flag, Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" & "Highway 61 Revisited", Bloomfield/Kooper/Stills/ Super Session, Miles Davis "Bitches Brew", The Doors "Soft Parade". How do you play on that lot and remain almost compeletely unknown, even to bassists?

Being asked to turn down by management
spinynorman replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
I thought I'd never get to the end of this thread. There are two pubs round here where the landlord knows the space and the proximity of the neighbours means the pub isn't suitable for anything more than an acoustic duo, but still book bands. One booked a 9-piece Lynrd Skynrd tribute on a Sunday and wondered why environmental health came round with a meter next morning. We tested the meter with acoustic guitar and vocals and it tripped out, but she still kept trying to persuade us to come back and play as a full band. Just mental. -
Thanks for the suggestions. The Epi Les Paul would fit, I guess. Not sure how good they sound though. If output and description is any guide, I was thinking this might work "ALNICO / D.C. =8.9K- Sweet and soulful classic PAF tones with a warm bass, punchy mids". Rather than other models in the same range, which are higher DC and either described as bright or good for distortion. I suppose I'll just have to get something and see what happens.

I'm thinking about a mod that would need a guitar sized humbucker in the bridge position. I've been looking online for ages and all I've really come across is a Les Paul/ Thunderbird bass pickup in gold, which isn't ideal cosmetically. On the other hand there's plenty of guitar pickups that would fit and look right, for example a Kent Armstrong PAF model. Thing is, I know how a Les Paul bass pickup is likely to sound, but with a guitar pickup in a bass I don't know what to look for. So, anyone found anything that worked well, or any suggestions what to look for? I'm possibly going to team it with a Dimarzio model 1 at the neck, if that makes any difference.

I had a Samson Airline, it just seemed to be more things that need to be checked before playing. I was always catching the pad switch on the bug and for some reason it was always the last thing I thought of as the reason for my loss of volume. I think there was also a gain control on the receiver which got knocked out of place in transit. I decided I can cope with the knobs on my amp and the bass, but any more than that is too much for my feeble brain.

before you upgrade pickups, amp, pedals etc....

I'm a big fan of accumulated ear wax, as I don't get on with ear plugs. -
Number 2 is a great idea, because dragging your amp head off the top of an 8x10" is so much more desirable than getting unplugged. Don't ask me how I know. :|
Years ago I saw an interview with the classical guitarist John Williams. The interview turned to the rivalry between Williams and Julian Bream. "The difference between us", said Williams, "is Julian has to practice.".

Ok, so was Jet Harris better than "Licorice" Locking?

So is Cliff Burton related to Trevor Burton, who visits pubs round here and makes a lot of noise? It's a good job nobody talks to me at gigs, I have no idea who any of these people are.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's my eyesight, my monitor, or is it just that ebay pictures are getting darker and darker. For example, the second picture in this Aerodyne auction, all I can see is a very bright finger.
Just delete the wiki now, I mean seriously - what's the point in it? Not only does no-one look at it, I haven't been able to log into it since the VAT rate increase to change the sums in the article which covers this very question. Hmph.
The wiki isn't exactly prominent, that menu above the banner is the last place I look for anything. -
There's a thread here on Korean Squiers http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=146890 To summarise, pretty good, but don't pay too much.
