1.
I've been trying to buy one for a while now, but no one seems to stock them.. Seems bizarre to me... Don't Gibson want to sell stuff?
That's a common complaint amongst Gibson fans, even in the US. Gibson see themselves as a luxury brand alongside Cartier and Rolex, so they're a bit snobby about who they have as dealers. And it's easier money to sell Les Paul guitars to bankers. You need to find your nearest Gibson dealer and see if they'll get one in for you.
2. Had a bit of a problem trying to find replacement string-thru ferrules for a Ripper and got two sets that were no use before I finally found a set that worked. The surplus sets both cost about £6 posted, and are unused, so I'll sell for £5 posted each. Set 1 - set of 4 large bass ferrules. Pictured against the inch scale of a rule. Set 2 - set of 6 small guitar ferrules Also have several sets of roundwound strings I'm never going to use. Set 1 - unknown make, no silks, brass ball ends, off a 2+2 headstock. End-to-end lengths G 44", D 48", A 45", E 44" £2.50 posted Set 2 - look like D'Addario, no silks, coloured ball ends, 2+2. End-to-end lengths G 42", D 46", A 46", E 42" £2.50 posted Set 3 - DR Black Beauties. These have been on a 2+2 headstock and the end of the G is just bare wire, but I've had it up to tension on a 2+2 since and it holds fine. The other strings are in better condition, but the coating does tend to rub off in places. The set has been on and off the bass several times while I tried to like them, but had only a few hours playing time. Lengths: G 42", D 48", A 48", E 45". Length from ball end to taper is 96cm. £5 posted Set 4 - Fender Black Silks. Haven't really used these after I bought them from someone on here. Silks are a bit fluffy. Lengths: G 47", D 45", A 42", E 41". Length silk-silk 35.5". £5 posted. Payment - prefer paypal as a gift; bank transfer or cheque ok.
3.
What amused me was that in the poll results graph at the top none of the colors (sic) mentioned corresponded to the colour of the bar representing the result. I suppose that's ironic, and would have been missed by TBers on the whole.
Although, just to confuse us, the "blue" bar is actually coloured blue. For the rest, I thought I was colour blind (my wife swears I am, but I tell her women and men have different perceptions of colour). Black is missing. Serious omission.
4. We did have a guide dog in the family for a while and I can tell you, the dog had more taste and intelligence than to do that to a musical instrument. She used to particularly enjoy "helping" me to load the car before gigs.
5. When I was thinking about a refinish I was recommended to John Diggins and there's example prices on his website http://www.jaydeecustomguitars.co.uk/repairs.html In the end I decided against it.
6. I was wondering what the difference is between Etymotic ER-20, ACS ER-20, Elacin (ACS) ER20S, but I've just found an ebay seller that explains they're all the same sold under different brands. Like 1970s Japcrap basses. I've got the ACS/Elacin ones and haven't got on too well with them. Amongst other things, they stick out quite a long way and I feel like the last of the Cybermen. Maybe I need the smaller fitting.
7.
Looking back, I've bought and sold a fair bit on here but I have to say that in recent times (like the last year or so) I find myself getting more and more annoyed with low-balling chancers who will annoy you over the sake of a fiver, or seem to think that postage costs don't exist. It's really beginning to put me off - so much so that I've been preferring to arrange deals locally (gumtree/other localised fora). Maybe it's just that everyone's skint, but the chancers irritate the hell out of me as I find it rather insulting given that I take the time to research my prices and put stuff up at a reasonable value with good photos and honest descriptions, pride myself on bombproof (or at least courierproof) packaging and prompt postage. Maybe it's just because BC is getting bigger - more people == more chancers.
I think because a lot of people put up an ad, and then after a few days with no interest reduce the price, often several times, everyone now expects the price to have some room for negotiation.
8. I've bought and sold on here and eBay and have had some very good experiences on both. I really don't understand the implication that a bass sold on eBay will go to someone who won't look after it and use it properly. What possible justification is there for that? Loads of Basschat members buy and sell basses on eBay, and they don't suddenly become bass destroying monsters because of it. I've sold several basses on eBay and overwhelmingly the people I've sold to have shown every sign of appreciating what they've bought. I can also say that every bass I've bought on eBay has been in very good condition and obviously very well cared for. I would agree that if it goes wrong on eBay, it does tend to go very wrong and eBay may not be much help. But to characterise everyone on eBay as an idiot is unfair and quite insulting to those of us on Basschat who use it.

10. A genuine uncle's loft find. Early one with fatter body. Good job it has a case, otherwise it's hard to find one that'll fit. Be interesting to see what it goes for.
11. That's nice. The ultimate rock bass, I think.
12. Shouldn't the octave pairs be closer together? Looks like the 7 are evenly spaced. And aren't the higher strings usually above the lower? But it plays well, allegedly.
13. He's done it before and appears to have got away with it. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=330560137188 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=330556059663
14.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-51-reissue-pr...=item3cb7ab666a
That one was up before and it didn't sell. I know a lot of people have been trying to get £500, on the grounds they were discontinued, but I've never seen one actually sell for that, at least not on eBay. £350-£400 is more realistic to actually sell it. I bought my 2004 butterscotch, in as new condition, for £400 and sold it on here for the same.
15.
This is my favourite, I think. Some great basses there, Spiny. I'll have to post some more of mine when I get a moment.
That has become my favourite bass I've ever owned. Just bonded with it in a way I never have before. It has a Kent Armstrong rebuild at the bridge which, for some reason, does a killer EB3 impression. So I can switch from Cream to Nirvana just with a twist of the chicken head. And it has the best neck ever, for me at least. The natural one turned out to be interesting - it's the older, fatter shape, but the body wood is Alder, so it's quite a bit lighter. Seeing Neepheid's IV makes me a bit nostalgic for the red one I had. And he's not helping my GAS with that Victory Artist either.
16. Time this thread had a bump. Too many lovely basses to let it drop. A few months ago I discovered Rippers. It wasn't exactly love at first sight, but now they're really getting under my skin. 78 in Ebony bought from Basszilla 75 Natural - when I bought this from Ash it had been indiscriminantly spray painted black ... But with a little work and a new pickguard it's transformed ...
17. This is pointy
18. Surprised to see gas for Gibson Rippers. I thought they were pretty much unloved. My two aren't going anywhere.
19. I'm going to kill this thread and you can't stop me.
20. My basses have all been liced and don't need it doing again.
21. I sometimes wondered what a Precision would look like with Jazz ashtrays. Here is the answer. Odd - IMHO. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-PRECISION-MIJ...=item2a0fc113e1
22. I don't read, though I had guitar lessons long ago in which I failed both at learning to read and learning to play guitar. Still, I can see where reading would be useful, so long as everyone in the band can do it. Our singer is quite a bit younger than the rest of us and tends to suggest songs we've never heard of. So we individually go off the Youtube and try to work out our individual parts, then at the next rehearsal we arrive with bits of paper that we've devised to remind us what worked when playing along with whatever version we each found. So long as at least one of us has acquired a reasonably secure grasp on the structure of the song, we usually make some progress. Sometimes we don't. Reading would help if we could easily and quickly get hold of a reliable arrangement, though I suspect that might be a flaw in the argument. The alternative - we'd need someone who can WRITE music, which I guess isn't at all the same as being able to read it. Happy Jack's example of Down at the Doctors is interesting. So he's in a band where it sounds like everyone knows the original and respects it. I've played it too. At the time we had a keyboard player, who jumped on "8 bars on piano" as his cue for a solo. I tried to explain to the singer that there was no point him saying "8 bars on piano", as the whole point of saying it was that there was no piano. Lost that one. Then tried to explain to the pianist that his solo lasted 12 bars, which rather suggested to me we had the whole song wrong. Lost that one too. An example of a little musical knowledge being a dangerous thing - another band but the same pianist, me on guitar, playing Bohemian Rhapsody. The pianist was playing from a book of Queen songs for piano, I was playing from some tab I found. About two thirds of the way through, I found the guitar part just wouldn't work, but not being at all confident of my ability anyway, fudged it and carried on. A year later, same song, same pianist, different guitarist, me on bass. About 2/3rds through guitarist starts to look puzzled, and being more confident, asks the pianist WTF he thinks he's playing. Turns out the Queen for piano book missed out a whole section of guitar solo.
23.
hahaha. What suprised me is the lack of knowledge regarding impedance from band members. Also not wanting to learn!!!! Its a bloody liberty and everyone just now assumes setting up the PA is my job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Impedance? We never get anywhere near impedance. "Where does this go?" (holding out xlr plug on end of mic lead) "Just bend over, I'll show you."
24.
of course bass takes less time than guitar - it's only got 4 strings innit? Actually it's a good job it takes less time to set up and tune, after all, if we weren't the consumate professionals that we are, who would set up the PA?
Setting up the PA and lights just gives us something to do while the guitarist is setting out his pedals.
25. Typical guitarist ... "bought the bass about a year ago when I decided to get back into a band in a bass playing role because I couldn't commit the time to take on the guitarist position" http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
