What does your Year Of Birth bass look like?
spinynorman replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
or maybe or even Would I want any of them? Um .... mayb.... No. Where's the picture of the lady with the 1956 P. Was it Carol Kaye? -
I've found it fairly easy to stop looking for amplification, but the habit of looking for basses is very difficult to shake.

So if anyone wants to sell a reasonably clean copy of the Humphries Meet on the Ledge book for less than £20, PM me. Why is when I want to sell an out of print book on Amazon there's hundreds for 1p + postage, but if I want to buy one ....
It was a gibby iv that I was on about too.
Did you like it? I could take pint glasses off tables with the open E. If only Gibson could have found a body shape that matched the headstock, or vice versa.

Now That Myspace Is Dead - Where To Put The Music?
spinynorman replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
I heard on R4 at the weekend that one of Rupert Murdoch’s companies just bought MySpace. For that reason alone, and as it's plainly crap these days, everyone should be looking for an alternative.
Are you sure they said that? It would be staggeringly old news, even for the Home Service. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4697671.stm More likely, they're trying desperately to find someone who'll buy it. http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2011...d-riddance.aspx EDIT Because Murdoch's paywall suddenly chopped most of the text off the WSJ article. Fortunately we can go somwhere else, and it's a better analysis anyway. So long as you acceot the only thing that matters is the interests of the shareholders. If anyone on BassChat has access to VC funding, speak up now, we could all chip in a few quid on top and make a bid. It never ceases to amaze me that so called senior managers of these companies can completely f*** up something that should have been a success and still claim they did all right.
"The new MySpace experience has been very well received by the market and we have some encouraging traffic metrics in the last several weeks. However, we recognize that the plan to allow MySpace to reach its full potential may be best developed under a new ownership structure and we’re evaluating those strategic alternatives."
Yeah, right. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/news-corp-my...ternative/44400 -
Lots & lots, no idea why but can't help suspecting a bit of shill action. I've watched a few of these in the past & they go for up to £150ish. So typically they go for a lot less than the Hohner B2A (also made by Cort), but this time it's arse-about-face: Even odder as the black & white finish is rare as f*** - they only made these for the first year (1985) that B2As were around. Jon.
I wondered about shills, but the bids that look like that only took it to about £80, the two that are chasing it now look more serious. Shssshhhh about the "other one". I'm watching that

I've had 3 basses with 3-point bridges. It's a bit of a shock the first time you restring when all the saddles fall out, and feels strange to be doing a small adjustment with a screwdriver the size of Wales, but when you get used to that they're ok. I was getting suicidal with the sound of my Ripper, until I replaced the missing bridge cover and installed a piece of foam between it and the strings. I now have at least 3 usable settings. Magic.

I had a Gibson IV which had an ebony fretboard. It looked really smooth and dark and felt great to play. Like others here, I think any contribution it made to the tone was overwhelmed by the all-mahogany set neck construction and TB pickups.
I don't think there's been an 'up to date' bio since about the mid 80's. There's a pretty complete version of the 'comings and goings' of various band members here.
It's the motivations behind the earlier comings and goings that interests me, whereas the later lineups seem more about who's willing and available. So a good history written in the 1980s would do just fine. Can you recommend one?
In 1969 I would have been living in Wealdstone. Hanging around Harrow Station on a Saturday evening before going to a party or whatever. Usually a good band on at Harrow Tech on a Friday night. How a bout yourself?
I bought "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" in a record shop in Wealdstone - a while before 1969 of course. I must've hung out with the wrong people cos I never saw bands locally. Saw Slade at Drury Lane and went up to the Lyceum a fair bit in 1970. The first outing of Derek & the Dominoes being one.

Am I missing something, or is this going for more than would normally be expected? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270713069923

Have you checked the neck is straight? This may help http://www.fender.com/en-GB/support/articl...ar-setup-guide/ Haven't run these video guides, but could be useful http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_3530_setup-fender-bass.html
I've been reading this thread with lots of interest. Anyone else read 'Electric Eden' by Rob Young? It came out last year, subtitled 'Unearthing Britain's visionary music' it's a big fat attempt to survey and explain 'folk' music in Britain. Lots of stuff about Fairport as you would expect, but it really is a good read all round. Highly recommended and not just for 'folk' fans. The author does a great job of illustrating how all music of all genres links and inter-weaves. Personally I like the Fairport with Sandy Denny on vocals and Ashley Hutchings on bass best. But we ain't going to see that band live again!
I was going to ask if anyone could recommend a history/bio of Fairport. I latched onto them through hearing "Autopsy" on John Peel's show, tracked back to the earlier albums and lost interest after "Liege and Lief". Never really understood all the comings and goings - has anyone written that story? I sat opposite Iain Matthews on a tube train in 1970. I only realised when I saw him onstage with Matthews Southern Comfort a couple of hours later and recognised his jacket. The odd thing is I never thought much of the first album at the time, but now I'm finding them on Youtube, they're the tracks that make the hairs stand up on my neck, not the later ones. The slightly related band I thought was lost forever was Eclection - with Gerry Conway on drums and Trevor Lucas on bass.

Sold Rich a neck I'd made a mess of last November and just sold him the body from the same bass. Thoroughly nice, quick to pay and has a good sense of humour too. I've also seen what he made of the neck and he's no slouch in the restoration department.

More bits and pieces ... A Percussion Plus chrome music stand, which folds up and fits into a convenient black case. All works and in good shape, the chrome is just a bit cloudy in places. £10 posted. [s]A Fender badged gig bag for standard bass, in very good condition. Not heavily padded by any means, but strong outer material giving good basic protection. £15 posted. [/s] [s]A bridge from an SX bass, with 5 + 2 hole fixing. Included screws. £7 posted. [/s] All items included postage within mainland UK only.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
spinynorman replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Triumph bass. "MIJ Gibson" it says. Copy it is. Interesting looking beast though. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RARE-1970s-Vintage-L...=item2eb3a989ec Edit: The seller is also selling some "retro" jackets. That look like they would go quite well with the bass.
I've been watching that, but I think he's started it too high. I seem to remember Jon's comment on the last one that came up was "I'll wait for one to come up in a car boot sale for a fiver, they always do." Which doesn't stop the unshakable conviction of current owners that they're worth £200. -
Did you manage to wind the salesman up into thinking you'd buy it?

Rather detailed description of the sound vs the original here.

Sue him for breach of promise.

Nice guy, bought my old pickguard. Thanks Tom.

Muzz bought some parts from me. Thoroughly nice bloke.

Depends on your objective. If you're in a Free or Cream tribute band, then you need an EB3 just for the look. To get the sound, some of that was down to the bass, but the amplication was a big part of it too. I had a Japanese-made Epi EB3 for a while, and they're supposed to be pretty close to a classic EB3. It made me feel a bit Bruce/Fraser, but I don't think it made it any easier to get the sound. I've had more "wow that sounds like Jack Bruce" moments with an MIJ Precision, or even a Ripper.
