1.
Lots of big name professional artists performing original material use deps on every gig, they are called musicians!
This.
 2.
Thanks for 'going on', John! This is an interesting checklist for me as I have my first (proper) dep gig coming up on Sat and I'm still a bit concerned about a couple of the things on your list. In particular, song arrangements. They are all Rolling Stones covers, one or two in different keys which they have told me of in advance and I'm fine with. It's just the arrangements I'm concerned about. If they are exactly as per the original recording then fine, but if they suddenly chuck in an extra chorus or do a longer/shorter intro then I'll need to be on my toes! Also how are they ending the ones that fade out on recordings? Plus I still don't know the estimated start time. Just been told we're 'last on'. Also been told 'don't worry, have fun, it's just a charity gig'. I'm not really comfortable with that attitude - there is still an audience there who are going to want to enjoy it. I don't expect they'll mind if I don't sound exactly like Bill Wyman, but I think they might notice if I'm still playing a final chorus when the rest of the band have stopped, lol! :-) Having said all that, I'm still looking forward to it. I was really pleased to be asked (I previously played in a different Stones covers band and sax player who is in both bands recommended me). And I love playing all those old Stones hits, so as long as I turn up at the right place and time I think I can probably wing it!!! :-)
Mate, it never goes wrong. With Dep gigs, just look at the drummer. All the time, beginning and end, then you're fine. I don't do pubs as I can't live off them, but functions/weddings/originals I can and dep on these as a Job. It's my role as a session player that's all.
I do wonder what percentage of an audience would be able to tell (or care) if a band member was deputising for another...Front person aside....let alone notice any musical nuance a dep brought.
Never really. Like I said the majority of agency gigs on the weekends are just 4/5 guys chucked in a band together to play the standard wedding setlist. Everyone loves it, everyone is happy. Everyone gets paid. :-)
 3.
I have a dep gig on Saturday. I've done a few dep gigs in my time, some gigs where no member of the band has met before.
Ha! Too many times this has happened to me. Bloody agencies. Always awkward when the bride or groom come over and say they've seen us before that's why they hired us
 4. All my work at the moment is depping. I dep 2 days a week every weekend. We can be trusted :-)
 5.
Plus one on the basslines. Always just the right balance of intricate, simple, obvious and inventive. The bassline on Spectre (which I adore) is incredible.
+1. Saw them live recently, and they blew me away. His playing reminds me a little of John Decon. Just the right notes in the right places. Does not overplay, but is an insanely good player that keeps the whole band together.
 6. I've got ACS moulds and they are fantastic.
 7. Currently i'm using a Hofner with flats through a Aguilar TH500 and SL112. Sounds wicked.
 8. Any good places to get my bass serviced too? Im South coast based as well.
 9. Been on the cruise circuit for a few years now and it depends on the cruise. The ferries out of the UK going to Rotterdam or Amsterdam for example are usually 'Dry Ships' they say you could occasionally get breathalysed but I never did. Use to drink with the security so they aren't that fussed. All depends on who's on the ship. The Filipinos will always get you alcohol if you ask. I've been on the big ships for the last few years and you can drink anytime of day. Which is great.
 10.
Hear hear. Really good to see Chris popping into the forum to listen to players' experiences with the product and offer help/repair so readily. Gives me a lot of confidence as a customer.
This. As soon as I'll get some more pennies I will be purchasing.
 11. Loved my 4-PRO, but it got just too damn heavy for me, and I didn't really need all that power. Suffice to say, it's a fab sound head.
 12. Learn songs in numbers then transposing becomes easy.
 13. I've been currently depping on a lot of gigs through an agency and all of their acts use backtracks. The track is full of 'sweetner', keys, horns, synth bass e.t.c - Works well with some of the new dance track. We all have IEMs and click is in our ears, if you're lucky you'll get a guide track as well. Perfect for a last minute dep! Having said all that, I'm not the biggest fan.

 15.
Modes are a red herring for 99% of the music out there. Think major and minor scales for now. The most appropriate notes to play under (in) a chord is a chord tone... you can go a long, long way just playing the root. Concentrate on playing the root on strong beats of the bar... then bring in thirds and fifths. Then you can think about joining them up with notes that fall between the chord tones. Listen to classic basslines and figure out what's going on on the basis of what I said above... go simple to begin with.
This.
 16. Project C, completely different thing you are talking about here dude. You mean lessons e.t.c and OP is talking about software. Back in the day I used to use TabToolKit, but not sure if it is even running now days. Was super handy. Is it for scores or just for tabs?
 17. Your transcriptions have become a staple in my practice regime! The Beach Boys ones were a toughie!
 18. Cleaning strings? Whatever next. Played my bass outside on a ship in the blistering heat and humidity all over the world over the last few years. Still going strong. Sounding more badass each gig.
 19.
Another one bites the dust..... Queen
This into > Good Times, Chic.
