Dream basses that left you disappointed
Acebassmusic replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Horses for courses ๐ .... Sadowsky wasn't really on my wanted list. I liked the look of the smaller bodies 24 fret ones but didn't have any real high expectations of it sounding much different to a normal jazz.......then I tried one in Guitar Centre in the USA and immediately put it on the list ๐ As far as lusting after basses and then being dissapointed there's a couple. A Wal was on my list for 25+ years and I eventually managed to get a Mk3 5 string. Fit, finish, function was great but for some reason I struggled with getting the sound I wanted. I hear others play them and go wow.....I hear myself.....meh! On the other hand I did have a Pedulla Pentabuzz which was perfect apart from it was "out of tune" all over the neck (maybe that was me....lol). Spector....love the shape / finishes etc and keep trying them in shops (you remember them?) but for some reason they don't seem to fit me right. Same with the BTB the OP mentioned, tried one and decided it's not for me. -
Is now good time to be buying 'quality' musical instruments
Acebassmusic replied to TJ1's topic in General Discussion
"....sell at a fair and reasonable price....." What may be a fair and resonable price for one buyer / seller may not be for another as basses tend to be very personal items. I've seen posts of people lusting after year of birth Fender Jazz's for thousands (yes, multiple times the value that you could have bought them for in the 70's & 80's). Does that make the seller a rip off merchant? Nope, it means theres a market for that bass and someone is happy to pay the money. I doubt there's many of us who if we found such a bass "under the bed" would advertise it on here for under market value! Over the years of buying and selling gear I have had the good fortune of making on some deals. I had a Pedulla Pentabuzz which I sold at a profit of 30% ๐ฎ Does this make me a rip off merchant? Again, nope as the market value was up. The very same bass came up for sale in the last 2 years at over twice the price I sold it for! ๐ฎ Does this make the sellar a rip off merchant? Again, nope as it reflected the current market value and what someone was willing to pay. ....And for balance I've also lost on deals. So, did someone else rip me off? Nope, they got a good deal whilst I took the pragmatic approach that if bills need paying, gear will be sold. I would rather have as little debt as possible than squeeze the last $ out of an item I NEED to sell. There have been some good deals on here over the last year where people have advertised basses at what I would regard as under market value (again very subjective to personal likes / dislikes). I bet no-one has gone to the sellar and said "Sorry I cant pay you ยฃ1,000 for that bass, it's worth at least ยฃ1,250....here's the extra" ๐คฃ I suppose my answer to the OP - I don't see the current market as being a special time for buying. There are some good deals out there but that's no different to other years, you just keep your eye open and something will come up. As for selling, I think it is slower than usual, which over time could lead to some deals being available but I wouldn't hold my breath. I've also noticed for sale trends that some months theres a flotilla of Fodera's for sale and the next a stable of Sue Ryders. This may just be one of those times when there are more "professional or posh standard" basses available. Gigs are hopefully on the horizon and "normal trading will resume" ๐ Now, if any of you have a Fodera Emperor 5 available, drop me a PM as I have a spare ยฃ500 to spend ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ -
I have a D-400 and did a quick review below as part of a PJB thread HERE. Still havent managed to use it in anger at either a rehearsal or gig.........

Maybe a stupid question about IEMs
Acebassmusic replied to Sarah5string's topic in Accessories and Misc
Nope....that's my job and I have the qualifications to prove it! ๐ In answer to your question, yes you can have both (or either). Usually you would plug your bass into your amp/Helix etc. and a DI is then sent to the PA. In the PA mixer an IEM mix (of your choice) is created and then sent back to your in-ears via cable or wireless. For this you don't need a cab, but if you wanted one for onstage sound, you just plug a cab into your amp/Helix and away you go. Hope that helps ๐ -
This.....and record yourself on your phone whilst you do it. I did NOT like recording myself at all but found that whilst I was playing I "felt" my timing was ok but when I came back to watch it there were some areas that were a bit looser than I remembered! ๐คฃ It allowed me to focus on those bit's and get them much better and pretty quickly.

What's the location for this?
Acebassmusic replied to TheGreek's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful

Acebassmusic replied to tvickey's topic in Gear Gallery
Enthusiasm, a big dollop of woohoo and probably a few "jazz" notes as i'm a bit rusty! ๐คฃ๐คฃ Not sure what bass though....lol -
Hey Steve, I've heard lots of good comments on the BMF cabs but have never used one myself so I have nothing to add really apart from do you know Bill is an active member on here? He has posted a lot of wide ranging "sound" related info that I've learned a lot from. Good luck in your quest for the utimate sound ๐

I think it IS the resting state of all groups of people who get together for hobbies / work / anything really ๐ After running my band for 15 years I closed it down 2 years a go to give myself a break. I would have classed the band as stable over those 15 years even though people joined and left for various reasons - changes in work, family health, other interests etc. The process of finding the right replacement person(s) to fit in both musically, personality wise and level of committment / ambition (we were amateur) is quite a tough thing to do and can be a bit demoralising having to go through the rebuilding / relearning process, get the band working really well and then have to start the process again after a while. Same thing happens at work, you build a team up and then someone gets promoted, retires, changes job etc. and you start again. It can be frustrating and demoralising but in my case a number of the best players that came into the band were replecements (no disrespect meant to anyone who's been in the band. I was very lucky ๐ ) I just take the inevitable changes as "part of the job".

I make sure all my bass and PA cables are Neutrik /Speakon connectors with Van Damme / Cordial or similar. Chosen not for their sonic capabilities (the differences in good quality cable are lost on my ears) but more for being well made and solid reliability. I'm also one of theose guys who always wraps cables correctly so I have some going back 25 years ๐ฎ

BA55 ACE - Reduced to ยฃ2,500

They're Ken Smith TCRM strings which I've used on a lot of my basses over the years. Even though I do move my right hand around over both pickups I've not had the problem of paying over the taper. To get so close to the bridge would feel a bit strange to me. ๐

NOT happy! ๐คฌ๐ Saw your bass advertised and immediately began looking down the back of the couch to try and find the farthings to offer in exchange. Turns out 1) there was sod all there! and 2) you'd already bought it! Darn it I was too slow.....but happy its gone to a good member here. ๐ I used to have a very similar one and a friend persuaded me to sell it to them during one of my "not that bright" moments Here's a pic of my old one and hope you have lots of fun with yours ๐ They are excellent basses.

I would agree with you on this but only as far as playing country (not western) is concerned. If you get into the more technical aspects of the speed polka genres then the baseline minimum would be raised by 50% with some scholars even quoted at up to 57%. To be a true officianado and expert in the execution of speed polka it is also expected that no external aids or stimuli such as chicken grease, sweat or WD40 be used in assisting the exponent.

One Finger Per Fret- pinky not an issue
Acebassmusic replied to Trylle's topic in General Discussion
Some of the "problem" could be down to the way you are holding In your bass. In the second photo it looks like your wrist is quite bent and your elbow tucked into your side. The lower you wear your bass increases the bend in your wrist (for 1 finger per fret) and tends to close your hand up naturally. This can be compounded by having your elbow too close to your body. Years a go I struggled with similar problems including bent right wrist resting over the top of the bass. My bass teacher told me to "spread your wings" ๐ and lift each elbow out and away from my body. Doesnt need to be far and it feels a bit strange to start with but I found it worked for me. -
This is probably the most "modern" looking Fender I've seen and quite like it. Yes its a bit bling but not too OTT. Now lets talk about this one......๐ณ Design premis "make me a bass out of some old floorboards adorned with a 60's formica chopping board shaped into scratch plate whilst bolting on one of those used necks we found behind the skip"...... If this bass had come up on Ebay by a certain bass-bodger ...er builder then there would be a Basschat thread about how could he wreck something so badly! ๐

I give a strong second to the Sadowsky Metro. Great sounding basses. PS: @thodrik How big are your hands???? ๐ฎ๐
