The nicest P I've played recently was a Fender 50's Original series. Beautiful instrument. Nicely played in feel from a spanking new bass but not a slim neck so definitely try as many as you can and pick what fits you best. One man's meat and all that...

As @Dood points out, this is unfortunately not the case with many post 2012 Apple laptops (and many models of Mac Mini post 2013 and iMac post 2013 too - some 27" iMacs of the same date CAN be upgraded). I intentionally went for an older MB Pro so I could make further changes down the line. That meant I had to go for a 2012, non-retina machine. i7, 16Gb RAM, 256Gb SSD and 1Tb drive replacing the DVD drive. It's heavier than I'd like, can't support Mojave (even though Apple say it should), is about as quick as it can possibly get already and it's certainly not as sleek as newer offerings, but it's blisteringly quick for a machine of its age, much quicker than my relatively new i5 windows laptop at similar tasks (i5, 8Gb, 256Gb SSD). That's an apples and oranges comparison, but there's 6 years between them! I'd echo others in recommending you buy the absolute best spec you can afford.

I was offered one of these in trade recently. Look interesting, but a bit of an unknown quantity and hard to get the money back on based on the trade value the other guy put on it.

Quite liked that up to about 3 minutes in then it fell apart for me, and nearly for her I think! I can see where the AIC/Soundgarden comparisons are coming from, and unfortunately the Alanis Morissette thing too...

This. For something a little more down to earth have a look at Tesseract's live rig. They're playing backing tracks to the PA and 3 separate click tracks to the band's IEMs from a laptop through an audio interface. Plenty of bands doing it nowadays, especially the click tracks and patch changing.

Sounds great! The unfortunate thing about it is the name... I've played so much mediocre Laney gear over the years I'd be extremely unlikely to even give something like this a chance, and I assume I wouldn't be the only one. You have to wonder why Laney wouldn't create an offshoot company to minimise the impact the old name might have on sales...

That's a great looking bass

It's certainly closer to what you're looking for than the Guma Antique would be. It was probably a little TOO clean for my purposes so it's definitely one you should try.
