Does anyone else feel that most problems in bands seem to be tied into rehearsing? Either too many rehearsals or too many band members being ill prepared for them! Alex
That's part of the reason I quit my last band. Rehearsals two nights a week - 9 hours in total, plus 30-40 mins driving each way. Rehearsing is all good and well, but too many "musicians" treat them as a substitute for practicing. I've lost count of the number of bands I've been in where guitarists (because it's always guitarists) have quite clearly not even taken their instrument out of its case in between rehearsals. I remember on one occasion cuttting a rehearsal short by 10 minutes because a guitarists broke a string 2 songs before the end of the set. I remarked to our drummer on ther phone a couple of days later that I was willing his guitar would still have a broken string when he took it out of the case at the next rehearsal. I wasn't to be proved wrong. -
Its not unusual. Lots of 4x15 cabs were made in the 60's and 70's. Thin stringers used 4x12's, bass players used 4x15's.
I remember an interview with Roger Glover where he talked about the Deep Purple Days. He and Ritchie Blackmore both had a set of Moog Taurus pedals hooked up to 4 x 15s and would have volume battles onstage. No wonder they were in the Guinness book of records or something for loudest ever gig. However, that's an award I thinkManowar snatched from them.

Try this http://www.studybass.com/tools/chord-scale-note-printer/ It doesn't help with fingerings, but does show you where the notes are on the neck. However, if you really want to get maximum benefit, use this as an opportunity to learn why chords are structured in a certain way and don't just learn the shapes. One final piece of advice. Don't play all of the notes in the chord. The trick is to pick those notes that really define the chord. For 7 chords, root & 7th works well, for standard chords, root and third, for diminshed chords, root and flattened 5th. On 9th chords, root, 5th and 9th sounds good, etc...

I much preferred the uber heavy bass tone on Sevas Tra. I used to really like the band and Otep Shamaya is a great front woman -equal parts scary and gorgeous- but they don;t seem to have progressed one bit since 2002 when their debut album came out. This is more like it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0epEAyyzyyA...feature=related
It's expensive. But no doubt someone will love the look of it. What's expensive about that.

The downside to compression is that too much of it can rob your bass of any dynamics and character, introduce hiss and boxiness to your sound and allow you to become a sloppy, inaccurate player. I've really gone off compression recently. I now just use a bit of limiting on my sound to rein in any harsh peaks.
Agree with most of your post, but I actually think Flea has something of a bad press amongst us bassists. He's often held up as a ''one trick pony'' slap player, but in fact, a lot of RHCP's best stuff is completely slap free! Listen to songs like Californication, Soul to Squeeze, Scar Tissue, Dani California, and there's some really good, melodic (non-slap!) playing.
As I've metioned on previous occasions, some of Flea's best playing isn't even on an RHCP song. He's the bassist on The Mars Volta's De-loused in the Comatorium. He also played on You Outta Know by Alanis Morrisette. In fact, I'd go as far asto say that the problem with RHCP isn't Flea's playing, but the fact that a large proprtiion of the songs on Californication and By The Way are a bit dull.

Here's the ubiquitous plug for an Audere preamp. They come prewired and are a breeze to fit. You may wish to drill acoupleof smalls holes in the body for the Z-mode switch and battery diagnostic LED, but I it's worth it for a preamp that will make a huge difference to quality of your sound.

It explains, in part, why Monster cables are so expensive. I'm assuming all those lawyers have families to feed/children to put through college/expensive sports cars to maintain. I own loads of Monster cables and whilst they are great cables, I only bought them because Andertons where chucking them out half price 7 or so years ago. When they go belly up I will either be trying to claim my lifetime warranty or buying some nice new replacements produced by OBBM.
Betcha do!! It's been used on 'The Apprentice' ads - heavily phased/flanged bass line with a girl group vocal 'money, money, money, moaney'!! - Google it and you will recognise it, I guarantee it. It was written by Anthony Jackson so he must be getting some new royalties for it!
Exactly my point. That song is totally defined by the bassline and apart from that particular vocal line, most people only actually know the bassline and it's the part they sing. Another one, Lady Marmalade. Play that 7 note phrase to almost anyone and they'll start singing the verse and chorus - or try to bcause no one knows the words. The thing they remember is the melody line G D F bB F G C, only it isn't the melody line - it's the bassline! Chameleon - Herbioe Hancock and the Head Hunters. Fair do's it's not exactly mainstream, but for 5 minutes, the bassline is the coolest, most memorable part of the song.

I'm afraid I have to be contrary and disagree with most of the suggestions put forward. These are songs with very strong basslines, but they're not defined by their basslines. Play any of the songs below to the average layman and they'll twig what the song is - I have tested these on my wife. Money - Pink Floyd - definitely. O'Jays - For the love of Money Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
