One of my friends bought an Aerodyne for nearly £600.
2.
It's expensive. But no doubt someone will love the look of it. What's expensive about that.
3. I can't post pics because seller has disabled right click ESP Grassroots Violin Bass http://cgi.ebay.com/GRASSROOTS-by-ESP-LUNA...1742.m153.l1262
4. The downside to compression is that too much of it can rob your bass of any dynamics and character, introduce hiss and boxiness to your sound and allow you to become a sloppy, inaccurate player. I've really gone off compression recently. I now just use a bit of limiting on my sound to rein in any harsh peaks.
5. Have you got any 90s death metal on vinyl - specifically Earache, Peaceville, Nuclear Blast, Century Media, etc...
6.
Stu Hamm, Billy Sheehan and TM Stevens Their signature basses are all rank too.... Pulls on flak jacket, kevlar helmet and a Trojan....
Why do you need to wear a condom?
7.
Agree with most of your post, but I actually think Flea has something of a bad press amongst us bassists. He's often held up as a ''one trick pony'' slap player, but in fact, a lot of RHCP's best stuff is completely slap free! Listen to songs like Californication, Soul to Squeeze, Scar Tissue, Dani California, and there's some really good, melodic (non-slap!) playing.
As I've metioned on previous occasions, some of Flea's best playing isn't even on an RHCP song. He's the bassist on The Mars Volta's De-loused in the Comatorium. He also played on You Outta Know by Alanis Morrisette. In fact, I'd go as far asto say that the problem with RHCP isn't Flea's playing, but the fact that a large proprtiion of the songs on Californication and By The Way are a bit dull.
8. Here's the ubiquitous plug for an Audere preamp. They come prewired and are a breeze to fit. You may wish to drill acoupleof smalls holes in the body for the Z-mode switch and battery diagnostic LED, but I it's worth it for a preamp that will make a huge difference to quality of your sound.
9. Yet more wackiness from Tennessee Guitars http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-12-STRING-GUITAR...idZp1638Q2em122 Answers on a postcard please.
10. It explains, in part, why Monster cables are so expensive. I'm assuming all those lawyers have families to feed/children to put through college/expensive sports cars to maintain. I own loads of Monster cables and whilst they are great cables, I only bought them because Andertons where chucking them out half price 7 or so years ago. When they go belly up I will either be trying to claim my lifetime warranty or buying some nice new replacements produced by OBBM.

13.
Betcha do!! It's been used on 'The Apprentice' ads - heavily phased/flanged bass line with a girl group vocal 'money, money, money, moaney'!! - Google it and you will recognise it, I guarantee it. It was written by Anthony Jackson so he must be getting some new royalties for it!
Exactly my point. That song is totally defined by the bassline and apart from that particular vocal line, most people only actually know the bassline and it's the part they sing. Another one, Lady Marmalade. Play that 7 note phrase to almost anyone and they'll start singing the verse and chorus - or try to bcause no one knows the words. The thing they remember is the melody line G D F bB F G C, only it isn't the melody line - it's the bassline! Chameleon - Herbioe Hancock and the Head Hunters. Fair do's it's not exactly mainstream, but for 5 minutes, the bassline is the coolest, most memorable part of the song.
14. I'm afraid I have to be contrary and disagree with most of the suggestions put forward. These are songs with very strong basslines, but they're not defined by their basslines. Play any of the songs below to the average layman and they'll twig what the song is - I have tested these on my wife. Money - Pink Floyd - definitely. O'Jays - For the love of Money Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
15. Too often, electronics are used as a marketing gimmick. Bass A must be better than B because it features 3 band EQ with variable mid or preamp B must be better than A because it features a 3 way mid contour switch. Often though, especially in cheaper basses, the active electronics are there to mask the inadequacies of the pickups. A god quality circuit should be able to do wonders for the sound of your instrument with making huge changes to the output.
16. Or get a second identical string tree for the E and A and mount it nearer the nut - a lot of people do this.
17. Depends. Only active pickups require a battery. Most EMG LTD, Dean, Ibanez, Schecter basses have EMG-Hz pickups which are passive humbuckers. A good way of telling is to pop off the control cavity and look at the pickups. If there are three wires and one of the wires - red probably - is clearly going to the battery clip then you have active pickups that will require a battery. Be prepared that some circuits will seriously boost the signal, so you might find the passive sound practically unusable. Best to make a note in your calendar to switch batteries at regular intervals - every 3 months won't break the bank.
18. If you already play a 5, then if you were to buy a 4 string fretless, I can pretty much guarantee that in a few months, you'll be playing your fretless and you'll look down and think 'sh*t I could really do with a low B for this bit'. Unfortunately, there's a lot less choice in terms of instruments.

20. Newer US Deluxe models have a contoured heal and 18V electronics. A 1998 model would have a block heel and probably 9V electronics. I have heard comments about the older preamps and pickups being better, but to be honest, have swapped out the eletronics on both my US Deluxe basses (1 x 1996 and 1 x 2001) because I felt they were too all or nothing.
21. I hadn't really noticed a sudden increase to be honest.
22.
? it shoudnt be Hans, its a new Fender one!
I remember you saying you'd replaced the switch. Did you line the control cavity btw? Nice work!!! No, the switch is decidedly iffy - the main board is quite loose and the contact keeps breaking. It's not a problem - they're not expensive and I have the option of re-wiring it with a 3 way and push pull pot - loads of flexibility and not a battery in sight.
