I prefer the Schaller as the locking mechanism is not itself under load, it's just holding the strap pin in the cradle of the strap lock. I've used them since my first Warwick in 1987.

Historically, probably distortion, then echo using tape loops, ring modulators, and then as semiconductors got into the act, phasers and waa-waa. Later on, with bucket-brigade devices, chorus, flanger, reverb. Then as integrated circuits increased in complexity, digital delays, and eventually the current effects modelling systems.

First was a dreadful thing called a Rosetti Bass 7, though I never used it. When I actually became a bassist, I needed a bass, so my real first bass was a Hayman 40/40 put together with bits from the Fender Soundhouse - there had been a fire there and Hayman were going out of business so I got the bits cheap. One of my biggest regrets, looking back, is that I part-exchanged it for a Precision, which wasn't as good a bass (but everyone played Fenders then).

I always used to busk through the ceilidh band gigs, though I did gradually evolve bass lines for everything. You may find the odd one in Em or Am too. And there's one or two in unusual time signatures like 9/8, although I only found that out when I happened across the sheet music.

I had trouble with remembering the bass line for "Long Train Running" for a while, generally got it going properly halfway through the first verse. "Dancing in the Moonlight" has caught me out too. When I was with the ceilidh band, I could never remember what tune was what. I knew the key so I'd just busk it - I did recognise the tune when it started and have some sort of basic pattern I would use for said tune but that was it.

I've settled on two types for the time being, Elites stainless and Status tapewound - mostly the Status though.

Never really thought about how I hold it. I do it quite differently to Dood - grip it between thumb and the top joint of my middle finger, with my forefinger resting on the corner of the pick. It's worth experimenting to see what works best for you. I don't use plectrum much on bass, mainly on guitar, and holding it this way means that I can pivot it around slightly so I'm brushing the strings with the edge rather than strumming them with the point.
