1.
I've noticed that when people have paid for tickets, they are usually respectful of the music and are quiet. This allows music at relatively low volume to be heard. On the other hand when people have not paid for tickets, they tend to talk over the music and you need to play at a decent volume to be noticed.
You've never been to the Flowerpot in Derby then. Worst place I've known for ignorant people talking at loud volume over the top of bands. They can't get in the gig room without showing a ticket or paying at the door. I think partly the room shape is to blame, its roughly L shaped with the stage at the short end of the L. There is a bar on one half of the long arm of the L so if people are round the bar the band is sort of playing slightly 'round the corner' from them. The racket they often make is at best disrespectful.
2. Yes I guess it's a matter of terminology. To me a 'monitor' is always out of the desk, if it's directly attached to a power amp I'd call it an extension speaker even if it was doing a 'monitoring' job.
3. The photo is useful and confirms that unless it has a label on it you wouldn't know which was which (if they were all black) without cutting an end off, the outer thickness isn't really a guide as it could be a thin inner core with a lot of shielding and a chunky rubber outer.
4. Good stuff again, recognise some of the locations
5. Cheers Dave, ought to look into this . As it happens the one I use is overdue replacing anyway as the outer case of one end got damaged when the ext cab (which is deeper than the combo on top) got banged up against a wall in a small venue. Could really do with a right angled connector on one end (if not both) so its sits more flush with the cab and doesn't stick out so much, might put an order your way when I get chance.
6. Does this apply to extension speakers from combos as well? I suspect I've been using a short instrument lead to connect the ext cab from my Trace combo for I don't know how many years with no issues though I'm not absolutely certain it's not a speaker lead.
7. I think people get too hung up on numbers, like if their own isn't the same mm at fret x as someone else's there's something wrong. Different players play in different ways and there are different approaches for different genres. Relief? well if the intonation is good/accurate and the neck plays comfortably for you then it's probably 'right' for you. Action is a personal thing, how much fretboard buzz can you live with, how hard do you dig in etc etc. Jamerson's action was notoriously high by modern standards but he'd been a DB player, probably felt fine to him.
8.
6 squid a set, get me some mate,
Here ya go, they only have one guage and in one material (stainless) but it happens to be what I was using from other suppliers anyway; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Coban-Guitar-Strings-Deluxe-DCG3/dp/B00A3HGGP8
9. All at same time, give the less accessible places a wipe down while I'm at it. Change every 6 months or so with reasonable use but I'm only paying about £6 per set.
10. Ah but the real question is were you headlining or support to the puppet show and did you do jazz odyssey?
11.
1st set, was bloody hard work. Various people at various tables were singing along through most of the set but a couple of numbers ended to pretty much the sound of the pub chatting. As an acoustic duo that can be tough. Even our big ending songs, didn't seem to go down that well. If I do say so myself we do a cracking version of Little Lion Man which we finish on a harmony acapella ending. -Nothing, no response. Break, Singer disenchanted and annoyed, cue a bit of singer love and reassurance. 2nd Set. Great fun, numerous people up dancing, singing along, loads of great feedback. Was it a different band? Different Pub? Probably just 3 more drinks inside everyone.
I think this is it, rather than how well you are doing it. I've been in loads of pubs where it's been an acoustic act on and frankly, even though they have been good, the general clientele treated them like sh*t or just background noise until something else came on. The exceptions are where it being billed specifically as a 'folk' night where a targeted sympathetic type of audience comes in.
12. Saw him last year (I think?) supporting hawkwind. Wasn't sure what to expect, he's no spring chicken so you have to make allowances vocally but he still produced an impressive range. Think he might have had a female keyboard player as well as guitarist in that band.
13. Well I think I made have made a bit of a breakthrough. I mentioned at last rehearsal I thought the set order didn't flow as well as it might but really it was down to how comfortable the singer was doing too many of the more 'challenging' songs back to back, hence he should be final arbiter but i gave him some pointers. Bless him he's just sent a revised set list to us all taking some of these points on board and it looks better to me, real test will be gigging it obviously. I was beginning to think I was talking to myself at times.
14.
Doug Lubahn played bass on quite a lot of their recordings, I forget which but he's certainly on Strange Days. IIRC they asked him to join, but he didn't think they were a band with a future.
They used a few session guys for studio (including Jerry Scheff on LA Woman) but, as gapiro was pointing out, they didn't tour with a bass player, it's Manzarak on his little bass keyboard.
15. What are the audience making of it though? Do you get re-booked?
16. Didn't know they had one due, will check it out. Enjoyed the first one and it was a great gig in Birmingham at the Slade rooms, could have done with a bit more air-con though!
17. Finally some competition for Bravado! Best of luck with the project, sounds good from the clips.
18.
One tone I have always loved is a very distinct technique - flats, pick and mute.
Me too, how about a bit of this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Le8bH3Y8U
19. Still not got round to watching the Later I recorded on Friday!
20. We've not taken any bookings until Oct 31st, too much of a pain. I know it's the final on 31st but we're not playing anywhere very sport orientated and looks like England will out of it long before then so fingers crossed we'll be OK.
21. Takes the song to a whole new level. Just not a higher one.
22. I'd be dubious just from the 'Stay blessed' bit at the bottom. Is this some sort of hipster thing?
23. It wouldn't put me off, though I take the point that it probably wouldn't register at all with actual time wasting fantasists, they'd turn up anyway. It's a bit like putting something up for sale and requesting 'no tyre kickers' I guess.
24.
I have a particular dislike for it I once played for a classic rock band, you stand there playing root 8th notes while the 2 guitarists take turns in soloing and pulling funny faces.
I think you picked the wrong classic rock tracks to cover
25. Slightly too quick for me, makes the vocal sound hurried. Nice playing all round otherwise though.
