Being the "house" band at a jam night. What does it involve ?
KevB replied to Les's topic in General Discussion
I used to dep for a few weeks each year then did the house band full time for a year or so before LL came in one day to tell us he ''couldn't afford'' to pay us any more but was happy for us all to turn up and keep it running for nothing! We told him that some die hards would probably keep it going for a while but it would only be a matter of time before it descended in chaos and fizzled out. This turned out to be exactly what happened, though by then the LL had been shown the door and the suspicion was he was still being given a budget to run the jam sessions but was just trousering the cash instead of passing it on to the band. Interestingly the next people who ran the pub ended up doing a moonlight flit after emptying the tills and fruit machines. -
Rush trib Bravado have had a consistently high quality and have been around quite a while, think the 'Geddy' is based in a music shop in Doncaster?

Just go from that to sweet home alabama and then the kid rock thing and back to werewolves ;-)

When Thijs Van Leer resurrected Focus as a recording/touring entity he initially employed members from a Focus tribute in Holland apparently.
I second Doors Alive. Saw then recently and was very impressed. Managed to conjure an atmosphere as well as a solid performance.
Yes they are a good act, they are the 3rd or 4th Doors trib I've seen through the years and are the next best after the Australians for me. I was a bit surprised when i chatted to the singer after a gig a couple of years ago how Scottish he was! They were supposed to be playing in Derby tonight and I might have gone but they've been replaced by an act called 'the strange doors' who look a bit second rate by comparison from their website.

The neck dive must be horrendous, probably straight into a giant tub of guacamole.

The guy you've just sacked then becomes first choice dep if he'll do it, sorted.
-
The Kate Bush trib featuring our very own sprocketflup is worth seeing too: http://www.cloudbustingkatebushtribute.com/

At their best the Australian Doors show was eerily close to the original sound (sourcing vintage keyboards etc) and though I'm too young to have seen the real deal they also created an 'atmosphere' onstage which a lot of tribs fail to do.

"Seriously?".. albums you like, but you're flying solo...

Saw Gordon Rowley in 1981, by then he was in a band called Nightwing. Very distinctive, stage presence a bit like Ian Anderson and as you say he could certainly play. Sadly I think he is no longer with us... -
Must have changed the set, they were doing this back in April this year: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-watch/2015/grammatikoff-duisburg-germany-1bc89d0c.html Which I wouldn't have minded seeing actually so I'll be giving it a miss this time round I think.

I've just checked setlist FM and if the November dates are a continuation of the tour they did earlier this year then the show is half Peter Gabriel solo and half Genesis with an occasional Watch original.
-
Only met you briefly once at a gig Pete but you struck me as a man with a big heart and I'm sure you can beat this. Onwards and upwards!
-
They are also doing a few UK dates in November this year with a more 'general' Genesis set (I think). Saw them a few years ago and though I'm not much of a genesis officianado they sounded very authentic to me. The lineup changes a lot though, singer is only person who has lasted through all the versions of the band. They exist as an originals band as well as a tribute, though the 'original' music sounds, almost inevitably, like early Genesis much of the time. Worth seeing if they play locally to you.

Not bothered even recording TFI Friday, it wasn't too bad back in the day but I don't want to see it done again. I don't mind Evans in small doses on the radio but I don't really want to look at him.
I don't own either anymore, but I owned both Alan Parsons' Eye In The Sky and Styx' Paradise Theater. I'm not proud of having owned either one of them. They're both terrible records. My friends who had any sense gave me a hard time about those records. It turns out they were right.
Paradise Theater is one of their best selling albums though, they even resurrected the whole thing in 1997 for a 'return to...' tour because of the remaining interest by fans. Think there are a lot of good songs on it well performed personally. -
That's the shortest episode I've been through so far this series, fast forward button almost in meltdown.

Not much of a prog connection but there's Chris Foss as well who does lots of Sci Fi stuff. Did the cover for IGB's Clear Air Turbulence album.

Not the best but Fleetwood & McVie have always worked well together.

Used to have Dean & Matthews' posters on my bedroom wall when I was a kid even before I started listening to the music seriously so I knew some of the images in advance of hearing the tunes...mustn't forget HR Giger as well, that ELP cover is fairly iconic.
It does make me wonder how an artist of the likes of Neil Young will ever come through again : his career has been fascinating, and is built on runs of outstanding albums, punctuated with utterly unlistenable stuff like 'Trans' - but he's never dull.
Trans is one of my favourite NY albums Agree with the general point though.
cheers Kev, I might just hold you to that, bet it weighs a bit though lol
That's why it's in the shed. I was gigging the 4x10 with the TE 1x15 combo I still use but after a particularly tiring gig up a steep flight of stairs I decided to retire the 4x10. I covered it in a tarp and the shed's pretty dry so unless something has got in and started eating it I imagine it's probably still OK.
I've had a similar experience, I went light weight with a Fender Rumble, nothing wrong with it but where we practice I get to use a Trace Elliot AH300 on top of a 4 x 10 Laney cab and a unbranded 1 x 15, great sound, I find myself looking for second hand Trace Elliot heads with the thought of using it with a light weight cab, or even a T E 1 x 15 combo. They're all pick up only though because of the weight, but if a local one came up who knows?
Paul, as you are local to me If you find a TE head and want to try it out with a TE 4x10 I have the cab gathering dust in my shed, if it still works OK I'm happy to let you have it on 'extended loan', stopped using it about 5 yrs ago.

They don't 'just know' it by some form of musical osmosis. Whether they will admit it or not a lot of players spend a lot of time working up new material and how much time you spend depends on how close to the originals you want to be, how complex it is and how quick a learner you are. Some bands are sticklers for getting stuff 'as it was recorded' and some are much more relaxed about it. There are a lot more teaching aids around now which I've found really useful as I'm not that quick a learner so anything that speeds up endless repetitions of listening to the song is fine by me.
