Some people are just better natural communicators. In my job I see academics interact with students all the time and there is a noticeable range of quality of delivery (and theyve all had training!). Problem for the OP is he has someone doing the 'old dog new tricks' scenario on him. It's always going to be a struggle with someone entrenched in a viewpoint and unwilling to learn. One of my earliest bands (which wasn't too serious, work collegues put together to do in house xmas parties but then asked to do some outside stuff on the side) was a massive learning curve for me as it rapidly developed into me doing half the 'fronting' with our female singer. I'm naturally quite reserved but soon realised I'd have to start doing some acting pretty sharpish to get our message across. You can learn a lot from watching other natural frontmen and stuff really can be scripted in advance if you can pull it off making it sound natural. You only have to see a band twice on the same tour to realise just how much apparently 'adlibbed' things are actually trotted out night after night.

Guitarpro, youtube and occasional notes but I can't really read stuff on stage so I never have paperwork there, it just sometimes goes in a bit easier if I write a few bits down or print them off. Might have a couple of projects in the pipeline but between the 2 of them it will mean fifty-odd songs in total and mostly not 3 chord busking material either. Fortunately no really silly deadlines on them as yet. Was once sent a list of 45 songs for a depping gig with a 2 week deadline, thank goodness i knew some of them. However on the actual night we played 6 or 7 from the list and the rest of the gig was me desperately trying to see what the gtr player was doing so I could busk something over the songs he'd decided to do which weren't on the list, and it was 2 x 1 hr slots

So what are the best sites these days for finding bands? I've also been looking recently and JMB seems to have the most ads regionally but agree with OP that a lot of them do seem preoccupied with not having anyone over 40 in them. Then there are the usual time wasters and those that simply can't be arsed to reply to a simple 'what kind of material are you looking to do?' when this isn't explained in the ad. Partysounds was never very well laid out but now looks worse than ever and doesn't seem to have the traffic it once had. Are all the decent sites now subscription, ie I will have to pay just to find another project? I may have something in the pipeline but it is all very hazy at this point and may not come off so I'd still like to know where all the good bands are advertising. Lemonrock looks very south biased.

OK an excuse to unleash this on you all again. Not only a OHW (I think) but some some of the most excruciating lyrics ever to chart. I defy anyone not to think of hitting her with a blunt instrument when it gets to the talky bit in the middle... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrIqsFSjqso

Thought it might be time for a thread resurrection as the tour kicks off in a couple of weeks. My mate (who tried in vain to get tickets for Nottingham originally) was on the 'reserve list' and it looks like some good seats, maybe originally intended as part of a VIP package but not used (not sure) have now been offered by the venue so we are going but at a criminal price. Fortunately both our birthdays are a week after the gig so some of the gig cost is being met by others in lieu of birthday presents which lessens the burden. So we'll be there, 5 rows from the great man himself. Once in a lifetime and all that.

Trying to look a little more cheerful on stage :-/
KevB replied to Deedee's topic in General Discussion
I'm not a generally smiley person at the best of times so when I'm concentrating on trying not to cock up on stage then it's not likely to happen much. However from a punters point of view it's never bothered me either, in fact there is little worse than the 'grinning idiot' look for me when it's clearly unnatural and put on. -
guess who I bumped into at spec savers the other day
KevB replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
My natural response to the OP's question was 'Pretty much anyone officiating at any of the games my team's been involved in I've seen this season' but I wouldn't want to appear bitter... -
Sorry folks, looks like I'm expected up north for my dad's birthday on the 7th so can't attend.
Rock Lobster was a Top 40 hit twice in the UK. They also had hits in this country with "Roam" "Good Stuff" and their cover of The Flintstones theme. Hardly one-hit wonders.
Not to mention Love Shack (No.3)

It was the same with the online 'my songbook' database of guitarpro files, they all got blocked due to supposed possible copyright infringement. At the end of the day they were just someones interpretation of how they thought the music went to a particular song, not a direct copy from a known published work. Youtube vids are same principle, just in movie format rather than a written document.

Moody Blues have had over half a dozen top 40 singles entries, Go Now got to No.1
Loved Lena Lovich....didn't she do the original of another one hit wonder - I think we're alone now?
The original vs of that is actually Tommy James, better known for 'Mony Mony'. Lovich (and later Tiffany) are both cover versions.
Video killed the radio star by The Buggles. If I remember correctly, they had a singing bass player with rather big glasses (Trevor something, I think) - I wonder what happened to him?
Buggles had two other top 40 hits in addition to 'radio star' though.

Have any reformed bands made a really great album?
KevB replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
When the Deep Purple Mk2 lineup reformed in the 80's and made 'Perfect Strangers', many fans see it as one of their strongest albums. -
Not sure if absolute favourite 'OHW' but this must be up there... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaHEusBG20c

Got to be Blind Melon on the fruit & veg stall?
Best I found: http://i207.photobuc...ons/75bands.jpg
A bit better, I'm guessing the posters on the wall are Presidents of the United States of America which I couldn't have picked up from the original image, so cheers

Good song, good album it is derived from (check out 'unknown legend' from it too) and an all time great artist. As he's said in interviews he just does his thing and if folks don't like the next album they might like the one after because it will likely be in a totally different style from its predecessor.

I've used one or two of his videos to fast track songs I wanted to have a go at for one reason or another. Usually pretty spot on as you say, though I was brushing up on 'Whiter shade of pale' the other day and I'm not sure his version is quite right though I wasn't listening too intently. Looks like he'd be a big lad to meet in person!

Is there a link to a higher res image? will be stuff in background that I can't see properly at that level of pixelation.
Lamb of God supporting Heaven and Hell (ie Dio) version of Black Sabbath at Wembley a few years ago. That was probably the loudest wall of noise I have ever experienced.
I'd forgotten about that lot. Saw them on same tour in Nottm, me and my mate lasted all of 3 songs before retiring to the bar until H&H came on.
I've Blue Oyster Cult several times over the years - never struck me as that loud.
Me too, they were fine every other time i saw them but that one gig was horrendous. My theory is they were otherwise playing venues on that tour that were poor acoustically and had to crank it up to get over pillars etc (like they had in Leeds Queens Hall for eg). The engineers probably just kept all the settings from previous gig but in the acoustically well designed RCH it was way over the top.
-
Inevitably Motorhead (Rock City, you can't escape the racket) but two that were really unnecessarily loud for the venues were Blue Oyster Cult in mid 80'sat the Royal Concert Hall in Nottm (specifically designed to have good acoustics for classical concerts etc) and David Lee Roth at the NEC, on freebie tickets only a few rows from stage and we were pinned back in our seats from the onstage wall of cabs. Even if some of them were dummies it was unspeakably overloud.

Surely a sign for them to jack it in after the issues with Malcome and then Phil Rudd?
