1. Been casually nosing round for a new project since mid January. One bunch of guys posted an ad on JMB and gave example songs which looked Ok, stuff I could cope with. Eventually got a phone number and spoke to a band member. The idea was they would start off with mostly covers, bring in original material with a long term aim of doing all own material eventually. These weren't kids either, but here's where it all started to sound a bit bizarre. They had been together about 9 months and had so far worked out about 6 covers to do, he reckoned they were nowhere near gig ready and that would be another '12-18 months' (!!). Then invited me to a jam the following day but said it would cost me £6 for my share of rehearsal room. Then later told me they actually wanted to work on original material without me first so I needn't bother turning up until 4:30pm. Then later told me one of them had to go at 5pm but i could still turn up for half an hour and they would waive the £6 which I though twas really big of them (I'm not making this up, honest). He finally told me they were not bothered about doing paid gigs so if I was looking to earn anything it probably wasn't for me. Needless to say I'm still looking.
2. Links to video footage or it never happened shell, you know the rules
3. Did it his way, RIP Lemmy.
4. It's not just the questions you ask, it's how much you believe the answers.
5.
When I replied earlier I forgot my golden rule - is there a couple in the band? Never a good idea in my experience.
My next potential project involves a couple, one of whom plays a bit of keys. Maybe I should just sack it off before we even start rehearsing?
6. Just going back to Gouldman for a minute (since there was a 10cc thread recently) between the ages of about 19-21 he wrote 'For Your Love', 'Heart Full Of Soul' 'Look Through Any Window' 'Bus Stop' 'No Milk Today' and a few other hits. Not a bad CV for a young 'un still gaining experience. Think Carole King co worte 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?' when she was still in her late teens as well. Kate Bush had early demo versions of material that ended up on her first album when she was about 17. They might have all been plonking out awful twaddle at the age of 10 for all I know and carefully honed their craft over the next 8 years. Or they might just naturally 'have it'.
7. Like other things some will always achieve their potential much quicker than others. Graham Gouldman was writing hits for other people when he was in his teens. Lennon & McCartney had a bit of an apprenticeship but still can't have been at it for all that long by the time they were knocking out stuff that topped the charts then and is still covered to this day. Sorry I'm derailing the thread a little here. I think I listed my xmas faves around this time last year anyway...
8.
I stored a portrait of a Trace Elliot in my attic. It was OK.
A portrait of Trace, eh? any pointless noodling with it?
9. Has anyone tried storing a portrait of their basses in the attic to stop them from ageing?
10. Thanks to mp3.va I've been picking up obscurities from the 80's, 90's and occasionally 2000's that I still hadn't heard
11. Not time to read it all but you will be fine plugging your 8ohm cab in, you just won't get the full power out that you would if you only had a 4ohm cab. This comes up regularly on this site so have a browse for other similar threads. What it is warning about is that if you use extension speakers cabs, ie driving 2 units from your amp make sure they are both 8ohm so the total impedence will be no lower than 4ohm. edit - beaten to it by dinz.
12. I've mentioned this before but back when I was going to regular jam sessions several years ago the house band bassist turned up with a Shine Beatles violin type bass and for the money it sounded very decent and seemed well put together.
13.
As has been said Sid was all about attitude and look, not his playing.
Pretty much punk in a nutshell really.
14. These days they probably use the left hand to take selfies with whilst playing so they can send their mates instant facebook updates of the gig.
15. Looking for one so I can post a 'Wakeman - bit of a pub player wasn't he?' thread.
16. I wonder if anyone could come up with the equivalent of a Hipshot drop-D tuner head for all the remaining heads as well so you could flip all 4 or 5 tuners a full step and back again reliably? they probably influence each other too much or mechanically get in each others way maybe?
17. By listening to Chuck Berry by the sound of it.
18. You preferred him wearing the tea cozy then?
19. 35 years to the day since Lennon was shot
20. The three 'retrospective' compilations probably covers the most years, going from 1974-2008 over 3 volumes with extra videos on the final disc, pretty definitive.
21. Wouldn't think a Ric would be ideal for slap and after seeing this I haven't changed that opinion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8KghoIuhqI
22. Seems to have had an innately good feel for a melody line from fairly early on even though he didn't start as a bass player.
23. I picked up a regular 4003 unseen (other than eBay pics) for about £800 which was the typical s/h price at the time, though it was only about 18 months old, in prisitne nick and had 'only been used for home recording'. This was back when eBay wasn't full of con artists and it subsequently arrived exactly as described. I had played a couple previously so I knew I was happy with the particular body shape and though not ideal for me I could handle the neck profile. It was my main gigging bass for a good few years but has not featured much recently as the bands I've been in have favoured a more precision type tone. Still have it, might get it out for the odd jam session over xmas just for a laugh.
24. One thing I thought from the video is that Eric Stewart seems to be morphing into Gerry Marsden. Mind you they can't be too far off in ages.
25. I didn't realise that two of them had married sisters, must have made it awkward when the 2 'halves' of the band split. I noticed that they weren't all in the same room together even now It's OK, I know they usually make these docs interviewing people separately.
