1.
5 Hiils Out played a short set this afternoon at The Belper Food Festival. Under an awning in a pub yard, very hot in the sunshine. Amazingly there were three other Basschatters in the audience; Chris Sharman, KevB and Andyjr1515! That's 4 active members at one gig (and already knew each other). Anyone beat that?
It was a good afternoon out, shame I couldn't catch the Sharmanator in the evening. Here's our very own LenDerby doing his thang. It's a deceptive photo, it was a big courtyard with not much shade so in fact there were a lot of people watching from the cooler areas out of shot, honest! Been using an SWR workingman's 2x10 cab as a extension with my TE combo at least 10 years (bought it from someone on BC iirc) after my back decided I didn't need to haul a TE 4x10 round any more. In truth there shouldnt be much in any stand alone cab to actually go wrong unless you abuse it but I've had no issues with my black furry box.
3.
How many bassists are out there who've had a negative experience of a more noticeable "stage presence"? I wonder....
I came to the conclusion in my last band that if I'd been a bit more anonymous I might have lasted a bit longer Ultimatey it's all down to connecting with the audience and some folk are a bit sh*t at it no matter how many acting lessons you send them to. It's what separates the really good teachers/lecturers from the also rans too.
4.
Stage presence is a strange thing. I think you either have it or you don't and it can't be learned or taught. It's not about moves either. You can stand completely still and still be the coolest player in the world. Similarly, as shown in another thread, you can have all of the moves and still look like a clown.
I've seen a lot of bands over the years (pro/semi pro/hobby in everything from large outdoor fests to dog & duck) and I've come to a similar conclusion.
5. Valerie makes no lyrical sense as a female vocal but Winehouse covered it so I guess a lot folks just dont listen that closely.
6. If you are playing very late I might be able to catch you. Got a meal in Dunkirk to attend but passing through Beeston on way home. Meanwhile I just scraped through (by my preferred standard) a gig with some fairly 'senior' guys last night, I jammed with them as they are currently without a bass player but had to inform them they arent really what I'm after long term. However I'm prepared to help out until someone permanent takes up the reigns and I'll help them flesh their set out. We did an hour last night in a band members back garden (unpaid, look away now Blue) as part of an annual little music fest for their village. Next door neighbour also had a little stage area and the acts alternated, mostly doing 2 or 3 songs each then us fogies finished the night off. Partisan crowd so couldnt go wrong with them really though I managed to drop a few clangers through rust (first gig in 3 months) and lack of preparation (only did a couple of proper rehearsals with them prior to gig), had some songs to learn from scratch in not a lot of time. Other band members seemed happy enough though I noticed I think I was the only band member not using cheat sheets or phone prompts for chords, lyrics etc. One of the reasons I'm not making this project a priority...
7. I believe Carol Kaye did some TV stuff too, certainly movies. Think she's on a few Lalo Schifrin scores.
8.
A weekend off next before playing the Belper Food Festival on the 9th July
I might be able to get along to that, will put it in my diary.
9. Some Daft Punk or Bruno Mars for relatively modern stuff might work if you have a front person to pull it off.
10. Needs more Clutterbucking.
11. Punching above your weight a bit there Jack lad Best wishes to you both!
12. After 'old faithful' bit the dust with a buckled axle I had to pick up an emergency replacement before I could get another of the type I liked and I'm still using the 'emergency' two years on. Its a flat bed type thing but it does compact to a reasonably small size. Got it from Lidl, about £25 made by 'Powerfix'. Still available via Ebay it seems...
13. Others available, bottom one has a noted transcription too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5AVF6L_sVw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dQ3z4b8OpM
14. Maybe easier just to pick it up from a video lesson? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFkIkwkt9tw
15. Just been watching King Gizzard... I have some of their albums so curious to see how they did live. I assume all their guitars are the same manufacturer as they all have that weird fret arrangement?
16. This sort of design works well, had many years of service from one of these until a pot hole in the dark buckled the axle an they fold up pretty well so dont take up acres of space in the car. Dont be tempted to get a lightweight one where the wheels fold inward for 'flatpacking'. They dont have the strength or durability for serious cab shifting.
17. I like that the keys player was determined to show every instrument he owns on the cover. Top nerd marks. Wakeman probably didnt lose any sleep mind.
18. Is it just me that thinks he sounds like a component in an atomic research set up? 'I'm sorry, the equipment is down at the moment, we are having one of the hadrien ferauds replaced'....
19. I wasn't familiar with In Isolation even though they appear to be a Nottm band, clicked on the link to bandcamp and I actually quite like some of this stuff so thanks for the link
20. Don't shave for a few days prior to gig, small cheroot in mouth and an old blanket with a hole cut out for your head to go through. I know you can pull this look off Shell
21. Can you still get strings that are a bit of both? I recall getting ajob lot of Rickenbacker strings on eBay years ago and a couple of the sets were something like 'groundwound' or similar name which were a sort of hybrid.
22. I've been guilty of at least grievous bodily harm through manslaughter up to first degree murder of many a song at jam sessions etc for years. Amazed I'm still at liberty tbh.
23. He hasn't had the heart to tell you he's mastered a bit of bass on the quiet and 'Police Force' is actually a tribute band...
24. Next for me will be BOC at Rock City. Yes, they are still going and, looking at their web site, not short of work.
25. I might be having a jam/audition with some guys next week but I probably won't take my Rumble 100 with me. I tried it at a gig once as an experiment for a not particularly loud functions/party type band in an average sized pub room and it struggled. It will have to be the Trace, though I will probably leave the ext cab at home.
