1.
Two things immidiately spring to mind . Firstly , this invention could be part of a conspiriacy to kill Neil Peart. Secondly, for any drummer under the influence of drink or drugs, this could be either the best or the worst experience ever.
2. It's probably easier with fewer people, I think the issues go up almost exponentially the more people you have in the band unless they are all really on their game. I'm currently in a four piece and would like us to get together occasionally to work up new material but they are a tight bunch who won't fork out for even a short session at a moderately priced rehearsal room. Result? yes we work out stuff individually and then try it out on the night and since I joined in Feb we have introduced a maximum of just FOUR new songs into the set which I think is woeful, I think it would all be speeded up a lot with occasional rehearsal sessions. All that seems to happen for weeks is we talk about possible new songs, I go away and learn them and then weeks later the others are still just talking about those same songs...by the time the singer has even got half the lyrics to memory it's been so long I've virtually forgotten it again.
3. Its possible to do weddings without being a 'wedding band'. If you interact with your audience a bit and do a bit of scmoozing after the show then it is possible people will ask you to do their wedding if they like what they heard at the regular show with that set list. The band I'm in has had some very successful wedding gigs playing our regular set because the people booking us actually wanted that set after hearing us at a regular gig. Personally I think if the band wants to head into that market more seriously then a wider variety of (in some cases rather cheesy) standards will have to creep in to appease those people who book the band 'blind' but that's the way it is.
4.
Sort of felt the same about Weller - "OK chaps, how do we give Quo a bit of credibility for the documentary"?
Weller and Parfitts fathers knew each other well, played a lot of cards together. Parfitt loaned gear to Weller when he was getting The Jam together (some of which he never got back), think Rossi knew them in their early days too and was encouraging.
5. Attention deficit disorder rears its ugly head in the drumming community again...
6. The colour scheme's a bit garish but if that's how she wants to wear makeup it's up to her...
7. Sunglasses hmm...shame the rest of the house band hadn't listened to it as much as I'd hoped. We did a lot of stuff not done for ages (or at all) so it was all rather hit and miss, that particular lineup has only ben going 3 or 4 sessions so we are all learning from each other to some extent still. Nice to see 'Shell and the rest of sun puddle. Jam sessions are a good stepping stone for new bands between rehearsals and a full on gig I always think.
8. In many cases of 'pubcos' (particularly Wetherspoons) they took over buildings that were never pubs in the first place though.
9. City centre pub last night, not a big fan. Awkward load in and out then have to go find somewhere to park etc etc. Small fight broke out between two drink addled lads as we were packing up at end of gig, spilled over into the band area and if it hadn't been got under control (not from venue staff I might add, security never there when you actually need them) we could easily had some gear damaged, fortunately all well. Then after we got all the gear in the vehicals we were stuck in a one-way alley with the exit end blocked off with ambulance and police as there seemed to be another 'incident'. I was at the back of the line so once I'd squeezed over to let an ambulance through I did a u-turn and nipped the wrong way down to exit at the other end (it is also pedestrianised so full of drunks etc). If it is seen on cctv I'll probably get a ticket in retrospect but in fact it was the sensible thing to do to make as much free space for any other emergency vehicals that would have needed to get up, no other normal traffic uses that alley at that time of night, the other end is actually always blocked up with taxis puling up and blocking (my) exit anyway! Apparently band leader looking into getting more gigs at the venue but I won't be fussed if we don't get many, more trouble than its worth.
10. Grew up with an older brother in the 70's who was a big quo fan, he got all the albums as they came out so I was well versed in the back catalog from an early age. Missed the programme but will probably be on iplayer or somewhere to catch up with later. I think I mentioned their latest album in another thread somewhere. Theres a bit of carry over from the previous album and as it is linked up with the film there are naturally some compromises but theres some interesting and quite heavy 'dark' stuff (for them) going on in places, worth a listen.
11. Think it takes a more dedicated rush fan than me to pick the wheat from the chaff as far as TfE is concerned. A rather stodgy homogenous bland offering from what I rememebr, not dug it out of the cd rack in years.
12. Some Lou Reed compilation. That godawful out of tune violin on Venus In Furs just doesn't get any better with age...
13. I sometimes wonder if the Jackson's management would have ever noticed 'Blame it On the Boogie' if it hadn't been written and recorded first by someone else who just happened to have the name 'Michael Jackson'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcDj46elLhQ
14. Had the album a while, got some good stuff on it and holds up well as a collection of songs. Didn't even know Kotzen could sing!
15. Some archaic Carlsboro setup with extremely limited functionality, it's a POS basically. But then it's not 'my' band either.
16. Vmax? now don't get me started on enzyme kinetics...
17. But there are lots of members of originals bands that are not involved in the music writing of the band.
18. I just want to find out the guy's diet regime so I can shed some blubber myself...
19.
Oof - I can't agree. Dreamline and Ghost of a Chance are fab IMO. The rest is in 'filler' territory, mind.
In terms of actual song writing quality I'd pick RtB over Counterpats any day. In addition to WoT's picks above the title track is good, I like The Big Wheel too whilst Bravado and You Bet Your Life are very listenable though not 'classics'. It's the last strong selection of melodies they recorded for me.
20. If this is the gig recorded in Paris it has been knocking about as a bootleg for years. Gillan was suffering from a bad cold at the time and if it wasn't for the fact it was being recorded they might have had to cancel. In addition he'd had nodules on his throat removed in the previous couple of years and it dramatically changed his voice, took him years to work round an alternative approach. Surely can't be worse than the performance that came out as 'Come Hell Or High Water' in the 90's. Blackmore's behaviour is downright unprofessional at times. I was at that gig and felt for Jon Lord that night, worked his arse off covering for RB.
21. Good gig last night in Sheffield and got there early enough to catch the last few numbers of Alan Reed's set. It said 'no support' on tickets so it was handy we went in as early as we did. Nad's voice is probably closer to Collins at the time of this material rather than Gabriel but as there is post PG stuff in the set then I guess it made sense to get someone who could adequately cover all bases, didn't forget any lyrics and the drummer did a decent turn too on some lead vox. Agree with WOT the theatrics don't really come off but a lot of the time I was just listening with eyes closed to the full band sound. Pomeroy absolutely bang on with everything he played, git...
22. I like the way the keyboard player becomes a human sequencer on this one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ_DDTOF64E
23. But by crikey these guys set a good standard IMHO... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4035B56wxqs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR67Qo1DYKE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WFU60rKTJo
24. Wonder if they'll get on 'Later' at some point once the album is released? too commercial maybe?
25. I still think they should have expanded the original band to Earth Wind Fire & Theft then they could have moved into insurance when the gigs dried up.
