Afraid I couldn't be arsed to listen but I played it through without sound. The video looked like it cost about a tenner to make, a few props and about three or four runs through in front of blue screen, then they paste in the backdrops later. Job done.

They do look good value. I'm not a guitarist and I guess it could be a dog but for £165 there seems to have been a fair bit of work put into this just looking at the pics; http://www.ebay.co.u...f7#ht_233wt_946 For basses if I knew in advance I was playing some really dodgy festival or something and was worried about security then this might be an option;http://www.ebay.co.u...d8#ht_518wt_709

And if you do be sure to send John Hall some pictures and point out just how much money you have saved,

Rickenbacker 4003 2007 Mirror Scratchplate/Pickguard
KevB replied to Ommadawnman's topic in General Discussion
I'd give this guy a call, even if it isn't on the list of stock items he may be able to source one for you; http://www.ricsrus.com/Pickguards.html If it is the same guy he lives reasonably locally to me, I'm sure this is where I got the vintage tone pot for my 4003 from and he fitted whilst I waited when I called in to pick it up. -
The only complaint I have with mine is that you have to put it exactly where you want it because, by the time it's got cabs and an amp sat on top of it, you can't move it.
Used to be in a band where the drummer would turn up late and then insist I move my fully set up rig (on the gramma pad) about 6" one way or another and I'd have to break it down and do it again. Lasted 6 months in that one

Caron deserves a slap just for the waistcoat alone.

Sounds good, may have to track this one down. There are a lot of prog bands with female vocalists around though so it's quite a competitive market, the more jazzy element here gives it a slightly different flavour. Reminds me a little of older style Magenta in places. I have a copy of Skeleton in Armour by the original band, is there anyone left from this line up? the guitarist in the video look probably old enough to be an original member?

He took a bit of time to get warmed up but once he was singing in his higher register it wasn't that bad. As said before it is (oddly) the lower range stuff he seems to struggle with. He can still hit notes that I can't and has a well established top notch backing band who can fill in vocally when needed. If people still keep buying tickets in droves and if he still finds it fun then what's the issue? Latest album has some good stuff on it too. You never see him playing the ric any more though, wonder if he finds the full scale neck a bit of a stretch these days?

The Killers: All These Things.... chords at the end?
KevB replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
Band I'm in do this too, though not every gig. I'm pretty sure off top of my head that we also do the first option ie Ebm, Abm, B, Db, Gb Ebm, B, Db, Gb -
Yes maybe a little pricey for what it is but I rarely gig without mine. There's one venue we play which has a very solid concrete/stone floor and I don't think I really need it there but in most venues it has certainly removed boominess and has given what was already (to me) a good bass sound an extra notch of focus.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting that. I love his basswork on the Doors L.A. Woman album. He must've reverted to his 'shotgun' approach for the title track though, can't see anyone pumping that for six minutes on just the one finger! Interesting he used rounds too. I always did wonder.
Looks to be using one finger for most of this version; http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2012/04/12/jerry-scheff-with-tributosaurus-riders-on-the-storm-and-l-a-woman-live/ That's a chunky lad on vox!

Does anyone play in an 80's covers/tribute band?
KevB replied to paul h's topic in General Discussion
Well that's fair enough. We can't all like the same stuff because that would just be horribly dull! If I'm honest I am actually very surprised how many songs on the list I actually like. I did cut Dexy's Midnight Runners out though
This is the real trick, find material that you really enjoy playing and which is also in demand, best of both worlds. Done it myself in the past, maybe it'll happen again in the future. Like some of the stuff I'm doing at present but its interesting how little of the atists we cover that i actually listen to out of choice in private. Ditch Come On Eileen at your peril though, I reckon it would be a real crowd pleaser come close to chucking out time, need a fiddle player though. -
We're out tonight and the set will be filled with things like Park Life, Mr Brightside, House of Fun, Walk Like an Egyptian, some Oasis stuff, 99 Red Balloons, Disco 2000, Stand and Deliver, Video Killed the Radio Star, Tainted Love, Chelsea Dagger etc. Real fun up-tempo stuff .... and not a bald man with a bandana and tight jeans in sight.
Hell I could almost dep for you mate, our current set list includes 5 of those and I've done 2 or 3 of the others in a previous band! having not been in a band for nearly a year and being told by more than a few at jam sessions that I really should be out gigging regularly I came to the conclusion that I had to swallow some pride, accept that there just weren't any covers bands doing what I'd really like to do and probably because there wasn't a market in it even if I had the time to organise my own band. You do sell your soul in acovers band to some degree and just shift the enjoyment factor more toward interaction with the crowd than getting a big buzz just from the music itself sometimes. -

Looking at the list rejigged I think the ratio is actually much worse than 1 in 4 or 5 for me personally but I could still see there being the market for it. Having said that I'm not thrilled about quite a few songs in the set I'm doing at present. The advantage is that its not my band so I can walk away from it when I've had enough. With the singer thing I was actually replying to Paul S's post (Journey, Foreigner etc) sorry didn't make it clear. -

Hope you've got a really good singer Paul, that 80's stadium rock stuff is the easiest stuff in the world to sing really badly. The guys that can pull it off convincingly are worth their weight in gold to a band. -

Are you the guy who's hiring and wants the rest of the band to learn 200 songs straight away then? ;)That list confirmed what i thought, for every song I quite like and wouldn't mind playing there are at least 4 or 5 that not only wouldn't I want to play but not that bothered if I never even hear the original versions again either. I think it was because 'classic rock' (though the term wasn't around then)got a new lease of life in the early 80's with NWOBHM and spin offs of great 70's bands (eg Gillan, Whiesnake and Rainbow from the remnants of Deep Purple)and charted both at album and singles level so the electronica just passed my by mostly. Some acts such as Pretenders, Jam etc were OK but most of the others seemed no more than the worst 'bubblegum' music of the 60's. -

Actually I find most 80's pop music risible (I did when it was in the charts in the first place) but I see the opportunities from a business point of view It will get a tirade of abuse on here from the purists but you can probably get away with murder if you can find a drummer who is good at working to click tracks, could have a lot of complex synth stuff triggered from keyboardist on stage who then might only have to competent enough to put a relatively simple extra layer on live. probably happened that way half the time live in the 80's anyway! -
Depends, seen solo spots (even at rock gigs) where everyone drops out even for a guitar and also seen bass 'solo' spots where the drummer carries on. The 'solo' as we know it within the context of an actual song is rarely if ever a true solo,it's just become the general conventional nomenclature. Then there are bands like, for eg yes, where Steve Howe will play a solo spot entirely unaccompanied but will play an entire piece of music he's written and recorded just on that one guitar. Is this a solo?

Ultimately it's all about where the disposable income is. A lot of people who have fond memories of student years or were at a time in their lives when music got important to them in the 80's are now getting to an age where a lot of their mortgage is paid off or they have successfully seen offspring through college or left home and don't have quite as much financial burden. They then have a bit more spare cash to be getting out to the pub more often and over the next 10 years there will be more of them that were in their early 20's in the 80's so the demand might actually increase. I like a lot of 60's music but I'd be cautious opting into a dedicated 60's pub band these days as that audience aren't really the typical pub goers any more, it would have to be theatre/club work as those are the sorts of venues that the 60's audience now go for (seats, early starts and if possible shows featuring one of the bands original members etc). It was brought home to me how time moves on when my band (doing lots of 90's stuff) were recently asked to do someone's 40th birthday party. That was what they were nostalgic about, it was 20 years ago! -
How to determine if youre a right or left handed player

To be fair it isn't a general industry awards thing, this is specifically from readers of Classic Rock Magazine so it just reflects the more mature readership of that publication. They voted for Temeprance Movement as best new band for instance, who specifically sound very Aerosmith/Black Crowes ie not particularly 'modern' at all. The readership votes for what they know or what sounds similar to what they know, no great surprises here.

Ten times more people in the audience go for a pee break during a bass solo compared with a guitar solo.

KevB replied to bonzodog's topic in General Discussion
I'm similar to OP's brother, write left handed but did most two-handed operations (golf, cricket) right handed yet had to play raquet sports left handed. It hasn't been easy teaching myself to play right handed and I'll never be a virtuoso but I cobbled togather a useable technique, couldn't play leftie now if my life depended on it. -
Will he have his up for sale in a couple of weeks too?
