Bassists who don't play in bands - what do you do?
You don't start by playing the O2. You don't even start by playing the Dog & Duck. You start by playing a simple 12-bar blues at a jam session where nobody is even vaguely interested in your technique. Little steps. Lots of little steps.
+lots. I convinced myself for at least 10 years I wasn't up to 'the standard' before venturing to a jam session. 10 wasted years in my book and my only real regret music-wise. Get out and have a go, nothing to lose and if you then decide live gigging with others isn't your thing I'd put money on the experience developing yourself as a player. You can pick up a whole bunch of stuff from playing with other musos that hours of bedroom noodling won't replace. -
No doubt he'll be trotting out the Why aye's, the are ye alreet pets, and the how ye dee'in bonny lads etc etc ten to the dozen now.
I'm half expecting him to have a guest spot in the next series of Hebburn, maybe doing a kareoke session down the pub

I did eventually restore it to the correct configuration with some authentic fender pickups and put a MM neck with decent tuners on it and a BA bridge at which point I gave it away to a niece who was learning bass at the time. It was a half decent playable instrument by then if still on the heavy side. Could never find a scratchplate to fit the original control plate though.
The weedy round-end pickups were another matter - not surprising a good few turn up with DiMarzios fitted. Jon.
Yeah, the guy who I bought my first bass from (we'd been in a school band together before I realised I wasn't lead vocalist material) had fitted some Dimarzio's to his Come on I only paid £30 for it... Nice tribute to Ian Anderson around 1:14

FWIW I saw Shelley briefly play with both bands at a jam session and I thought from the off that the one that is carrying on looked a far more commercially giggable proposition than the one that has folded. For someone who hasn't been drumming that long (though I know naff all about drumming god knows I've played with a few in my time) I thought he did a sterling job last time I saw you all play. As said before if you can develope together and become a tight unit that's half the battle in a band.

It's sometimes nice when other musos see you putting your Fender back in the case and you flip it over and they see the ferruled holes in the back and give you that 'Ooh its a US model' look. Pure snobbery I know...

I tried to learn stuff by osmosis but trying to explain the soggy state of the copy of 'Yes Complete' when handing it back to the public library and the fact the bath was never really big enough made me have a rethink. Just as well this was pre-laptop days, could have electrocuted myself...

I still like GuitarPro. I don't use it exclusively and I wouldn't go into a gig cold having learned something from a GP file and never hearing the 'original'. I always track down some recording or other of the song to have a good listen to as well. I've only recently started using youtube tutorials and some of these are very useful as well. When there are multiple bassist's attempts at the same tune its interesting to see just how different some of them are in terms of complexity and approach. It's nice to have some back-up confirmation of what you think you are hearing is also what someone else thinks is the right thing too.

I have 3 thru-body strung Fenders and with at least one of them I did try conventional set up once when I changed strings but it didn't seem to make much of a difference to either feel or sound. I re-string them all thru-body now just out of habit, don't really think about it.

I think there are lots of underrated basslines in WA material and often it's not easy (for me at least) to pick it out by ear. I'd love a really good set of transcriptions for their classics. Apparently Martin Turner was going to do a book of them at one point but it never happened.
If you can fork out about £50 you get Guitar Pro, then you've got access to all the Guitar Pro tabs on sites like Ultimate Guitar. I found that there were a couple of transcripts in the white pages book that were wrong, considering it's £20...
This. I can learn stuff about three times quicker using GP than reading it off a dusty page. And it doesn't date, as long as people are producing accessible GP files for songs as they are released.

Nothing to add except I think 'Moderation and the report button' sounds like a cool 80's influnenced indie band name.
I actually left my last band mainly for this reason! We always had used setlists (in fact it was me that used to do them), but the singer decided that he wanted the spontaneity of being able to call the songs to "suit the atmosphere and the audience" Bizarrely, he had less imagination than empathy and often used to call the same songs in a similar order anyway... Other songs he would simply forget about for several gigs in a row...
Are you sure you didn't used to be in my band?
'Northern Lights' always reminds me, stylistically, of the music to Follyfoot and White Horses (both of which I also loved as kid). Also, does anyone remembers 'Solstice' (I auditioned for them but didn't get the gig - no surprise as I wouldn't have given to to me at that time either!!).
I remember Solstice from an obscure prog compilation album that a mate of mine had. They have recently resurfaced and their latest album is worth a listen, includes some old 80's era stuff as bonus tracks remixed by Steve Wilson who's apparently a fan; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prophecy-Solstice/dp/B00EYUIQCG/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1389011500&sr=1-1&keywords=solstice

Sympathise with the OP, I've had this out with our band leader (singer/front man) to no avail. He likes to supposedly 'keep it flexible, go with the feeling from the crowd' but in truth we often play very very similar sets so how flexible is it really? However without knowing for sure what he wants to do next (I suspect half the time he doesn't either) there are inevitably awkward gaps that in some cases seem to go on forever especially when the guitarist is fiddling about with amp setting or whatever for a particular sound. One of the reasons (along with chronic lack of reinvestment in gear) I think the band has never got out of the pub circuit. Just coming up to my first anniversary of joining but at this rate I'd be surprised if I do another full year despite being reasonably busy.

Looks like the BBC are gamely trying to carry on doing the week by week programmes, this Thurs (BBC4 19:30) will be the show originally shown 04/01/79 and features Generation X, Elton John, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Olivia Newton-John and Racey. By 79 more DJ's were being used so they won't have to keep editing episodes featuring JS and DLT so often with any luck.

I have a little Korg GA in the spare bedroom for when I'm noodling around to stuff and for gigging have the Behringer pedal tuner, never let me down and excellent value for money (assuming they still make them?)

Our Sat night gig wasn't heaving by the venue's usual standard but considering we'd only played there on NYE I was surprised how many were there. Uneventful, both myself and singer severely under the weather healthwise at moment but show must go on. Some ageing drunk woman continually hassling us to play some Westlife track to 'get them up dancin' despite the fact there were already plenty of people dancing to what we were actually playing. She could barely walk or string a sentence together let alone dance. Ah well, job done and paid and no more Sat nights for a couple of weeks, after the xmas schedule we are all ready for a break. One of my least involved jam sessions today, people kept turning up and wanting to play so we just sorted them out on stage and let them get on with it. Never been paid as much for playing so few notes in my life, perfect when you are full of cold and shagged out from previous night's gig.
+1 to that. I believe she married Roy Wood of Wizzard. Which always struck me as a weird pairing....
This is news to me, may well be to Annie & Roy too...

On a lesser note, why do pubs seem to wait until the absolute last minute to come up with the cash on the night? They see you clearing your gear away, they see you load all of it into the cars and they see you hanging around getting in the way of their doormen trying to get their punters out of their venue. Just give us the money and we'll be happily on our way thankyou...

I think ms Lansbury graced many a wall back in the day... -
Not quite the same situation but I was asked to dep in a trio and sent a 42 song set list to have a go at. On the night i think we actually played about six of them, the rest I had to busk. Problem was it was a mate and who I still play with fairly regularly but I felt I'd been truly driopped in it on th enight and I was trying to make a good impression. I can't really read chord shapes on other players in front of me as I don't play guitar and it wouldn't have been feasible on that night anyway due to the stage/lights positioning. The guy Pete's had to deal with sounds a complete tool though.
