1. Yes he's on the PAL album 'Malice In Wonderland' (slightly cheesy title but well worth a listen) and was in Plant's backing band as well as on the first few albums. I saw him with Plant at the NEC on the 'Shaken n Stirred' tour. Good player.
2. For home practice I have a little 25W Marshall 1x10 combo sat on top of a chest of drawers in my 'office/music room' (ie the third bedroom that's naff all use for anything else). It's getting abit old now but still does a job, not sure if they make them any more.
3. Case, floor stand or hanging on a wall depending on circumstances and how often they are in use.
4. Just a great riff that happens to be played on bass, don't think 'groove' or dancibility is any pre-requisite at all.
5.
Wateroftyne surely deserves a mention.....he's in Lindisfarne......they're famous !!!
Closer to a Lindisfarne tribute show really but I'm sure it's a great gig to play none the less. He's also backed Mark Knopfler on the odd occasion and was in the band fronted by Lonnie Donnegan's son so all power to the tynester's elbow.
6. Have to say I don't really think of anything after The Wall as being Pink Floyd at all. They are essentially either Waters or Gilmour solo albums even if it might have PF on the label.
7. Yep, as so often the case it's the quality of the vocals that really sell it. If I was being really critical I'd say ditch the music stand but I've seen acts like this before and they often have incredibly large set lists to choose from so it becomes very difficult to have it all totally down by memory.
8. Glad to hear it went well and even more glad you didn't go all Pete Townsend at the end.
9. Yep, I recall once playing an outdoor school charity thing and some young girl actually asked me to autograph her arm, surreal.
10. I've always loved Tull's 'Live Bursting Out' album for the between-song banter as much as the songs themsleves.
11. Agree with JTUK, there should be some sort of inclusiveness and getting the [s]drunken mob [/s] audience onside but doing it well is an undervalued skill.
12. We're all different but I don't think I could give what I'd feel was my best to three different projects, if the rewards were getting that low then definitley time to move on. Hope the remaining band goes from strength to strength.
13. I guess my rig is quite modest by modern standards. Even with the extension 2x10 at 4ohms I think my TE 1x15 combo is rated at about 300W. I'm mostly doing pubs and weddings/similar private functions so it's been fine for that. It has a DI out for bigger venues but I don't recall the master volume ever being above half way, for typical pub gigs its on about level 3 and we're not a particularly quiet band. If I turned up too much it would just mean I couldn't hear what other band members were doing properly (no monitors).
14. And one final bumperini then I'll let this drift to the bottom of the pile. May have one buyer but no deffo deal done yet so technically still up for grabs. If still available I will take it to Midlands bass bash in May if anyone fancies a dabble.
15. Well I was banking on us all sharing an old bourbon creme I found down the back of the sofa. I've got most of the fluff off it now.
16. I fell at the first hurdle. All my Fender basses have Fender logo straps and all the same colour come to think of it. I've always rather liked them...
17.
so people will need a chance to rest their ears, talk to each other normally, and have a cup of tea and a Danish pastry.
Danish Pastry? Dainish f***ing Pastry? This isn't the soft shandy drinking south east you know...
18.
I usually find it depends on wherever, whatever twat of a keyboard player we've got sets up. It usually works out like this (can't do a pie chart) 5% of stage bassplayer, with headstock stuck up in air
Aye, that'll be me except I don't have space to do that and get a decent go at the mic for b.vox. End up in some crappy space about half the width given to the guitarist yet I'm the one with the longest instrument neck and shoved up against the side of the PA speaker, knocked my bass out of tune twice at gigs from this nonsense and end up like Quasimodo to get a half decent b.vox volume. Boils my piss.
19.
So how many people have been killed or injured by untested faulty electrical equipment at music venues so far ?.
I'd be very surprised if the stats even detail the test records of items involved in incidents. The test tells you if there is a problem at the time you test it and that's it. It will only be foolproof if you test before you use the equipment every single time and we all do that, right? If a fault occurs between tests you wouldn't know until the next test. Up to the individual to [s]completely guess[/s] assess the situation as to the likelyhood of a fault occurring and thus how often to test.
20. I won't necessarily just be providing coffee/tea/milk/biccies, if there's anything I have stashed away that no one else is bringing and might be of use then I'll see what I can do closer to the date but I have a fairly small collection and most things will be already covered. If it hasn't been sold by then maybe the active USA precision deluxe, don't see a vast number of those around? Also in other larger bass gatherings some folks have brought along gear that they wanted to sell, I assume this is still allowed irrespective of the new BC sales [s] tax[/s] policy? if its only a small number then chances are slim of actually offloading anything but don't see an issue with people pitching up with unwanted pedals and other bits? Maybe someone can bring along a PAT tester and we can get all our gear done for a year?
21. I thought that might be the case, since obviously if the mp3 files are copied to an ipod then there is no link to the image file to reference back to. Just that very very occasionally I've had albums that I've attached the image file to, transferred them to the ipod and the image isn't seen even though it can be seen to be attached when the file is viewed via itunes on the pc. In these odd occasions I've attached the image files again, synch'd the ipod again and hey presto the images are seen by the ipod. i think it's just an occasional glitch in the ipod's internal software rather than an itunes issue.
22.
And where is your backup? Right next to the computer it's backing up or in an entirely different physical location?
Backup HD at work, they are so slim these days it can easily go in my rucksack even when I'm on the bike for when i need to take it home for its monthly update. Currently use a 2TB but it is slowly filling, might have to think about upgrading ot a 3 TB in a year or so or do some serious clearing of unwanted files.
23.
If you're using a decent browser (not ie) you can simply google the album artwork and drag and drop the image into iTunes. It is remarkably simple software if you think like a child.
Actually this raises a question I've wondered before but never tested. If you just drag the image into the 'info' box so the image is attached to the mp3 file is there a physical copy of the image file copied to hard drive and where is it stored? It's never been an issue for me as i always save a copy of the image file in the folder on my music archive with the mp3 files then I always have a version I can find instantly in case of future problems. If you get into the habit of doing the old right click and 'save image as' then it doesn't matter which browser you use, they all seem to understand this. Don't know how you'd go about it on a smartphone or similar though, never had one. Always been laptop ->external HD->ipod for my music on the move.
24.
The metadata is essential for any music application.
Absolutely bang on. There are probably no ends of gripes of 'itunes is sh*te' that are nothing to do with the application and all to do with the jibberish in the metadata that it's trying to make sense of. Only by A-B ing two different itunes type applications with the same problematic music file can you really make any conclusions as to how superior one is compared to the other. Ive got over 70,000 mp3's in my collection and the numbers that iTunes has struggled with is incredibly low and it has virtually always been down to junk metadata. I've recently come across a really odd one though. I got a crude collection of tracks that were culled from a series of compilations. itunes doesn't seem to want to read the metadata fully and keeps lobbing the tracks in an 'unknown artist' folder even though the correct data seems to be in the right boxes when i interrogate the files. If I go in and edit the boxes and put exactly the same info in there again then itunes reads them OK. It just looks as though whoever entered the info originally has either corrupted the info or formatted it in some bizarre way. The tracks show up on itunes fine and play Ok, they are just not filed in my directory in the hard drive correctly. I'll just have to go in and correct all the metadata some time but there are over 75 files and it'll have to wait for a rainy day (no I don't live in Somerset).
25. Always kept a backup hard drive, update about monthly using synctoy (absolute doddle to use and it's free software) ; http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/software/3333540/microsoft-synctoy-21-review/ With the relatively low cost of external storage media it's madness not to if your collection is of any size and/or rarity. And of course you can back up all the other useful documents at the same time.
