Turned up to find another band loading in and their name was on the blackboard to play! Manager conveniently on holiday and his stand in wasn't taking any responsibility for the double booking and certainly wasn't going to offer any compensation. We'd given up one of our regular residency nights elsewhere to do this one so it was a double whammy. By the time our band leader turned up with the paperwork to show we were genuinely also booked the stand in manager had gone into hiding. We will have to catch up with the one who booked us when he's back from holiday, if no compensation we may have to write this venue off which would be a shame as we've gone down there fairly well in the past (which is why they asked us back or last night!!) The drummer was especially put out as he'd already unloaded his kit and gone to park up (no parking at the venue, city centre) and he'd invited a load of friends down.
Obviously kiss of death mentioning the gig here, we were double booked on arrival so didn't play this one I'm afraid. Sorry to anyone who turned up, that wasn't me playing or my band. Still trying to chase up the pub manager, who made the error, for compensation - conveniently on holiday. We gave up another gig elsewhere to do this one!!
I would put should I stay or should i go in second set. We play it late on and it goes down well for the dancers
Yup, we don't do it often (another that's been done to death, we have enough of those in the set as it is!) but when we do it's very late, often as an extra encore.
The magic of Yes is the composition, arranging and vocal harmonies not the playing.
Absolutely, if ever there was an example of the whole being greater than the sum of it's parts then it's Yes. But it helps to have 'parts' that are a cut above the average from the get go...
I'd leave Alright Now till well into the second set. If for no better reason there are people who have heard it so often from so many bands they will actually walk out once they hear it being started up, I've seen it happen.
I've come to the conclusion that mid week gigs are full of people with serious alcohol problems and no life!! I'm sticking to Fri, Sat and Sun gigs from now on!
I've had plenty of PPS (pissed punter syndrome) experience at weekend gigs so it's no guarantee! I recall one a month or two back being harangued by a woman saying we should be playing sopmething or other by Westlife because it would 'get people dancing'whilst being oblivious to the fact we'd had plenty of people dancing all night and the lady in question was so paralytic we had difficulty understanding what she was saying, she could barely walk never mind dance!
I can well believe it, he seemed a real enthusiast. He took my number as he was putting together a 60's covers band at the time but didn't hear from him subsequently.
The guy that runs Rickysounds is alright, he lives in north side of Nottingham. Bought a 'classic tone' pot from him and then said if I brought my bass he'd solder it in for me if i could wait so I nipped off for a coffee and he did a neat and tidy job. One of the first things I did when I got my 4003 was take the PU cover off. I've never cut myself on the PU surround or had any real issues with the gap, from what some people write you'd think it was the grand canyon surrounded with razor blades. Having said that it's not my main gigging bass and hasn't been for several years.
If you're passing through the city centre this Sat and want to have a look in my current employers are playing The Bell (just off Market Square) this Sat. Feel free to pop in and have a boogie or just nod sagely in the corner. Covers from the 60's to britpop and beyond, we'll even chuck in a few more recent hits if you're lucky (apparently I'm curently playing a Pharrel Williams song and I don't even know who he is... )
Won my US jazz on eBay and the pickup address turned out to be a hairdressers in Northampton. I walked in and one of the crimpers took one look at me and the state of my hair and said 'You'll be here for that guitar then...'
Well I just sacked off a gig at the weekend so I could go to watch Huddersfield's last home match and attend a family christening the next morning. Wasn't even ill Actually I'd already voluntarily given it up so someone else could keep up to speed with the current setlist so not quite as lacking in commitment as you might think. Well done for not letting folks down though Pete, top marks.
Not seen anything on either first two Later's that have really blown me away yet but it's that sort of show. The young girl jazz singer had a hell of a voice on the most recent one though even if it wasn't a genre I listen to very much (sorry Bilbo).
Funnily enough someone gave me a set of Rotos for my birthday the other week so they are going to replace the £5 a set jobs I've been happily using recently. I doubt whether I'll notice much difference in tone in a real playing situation though.
Roger Davis? There was a recent thread about him here
