BLONDIE 40th Anniversary Maida Vale studio set on BBC Iplayer.
KevB replied to MB1's topic in General Discussion
Saved me the effort of tuning in, I saw a live recording of them somewhere about 10 years ago (at least) and thought her voice was shot then. -
Minimal difference, might be interesting swapping the strings over and doing it again (I know they are the same type but have they had the same amount of wear?) but irrespective I doubt you'd hear any difference in a full band situation and the punters certainly wouldn't. But then the walnut isn't being sold as being anything different tonewise over std rics. In fact a lot of people might send them back if they were radically different in sound without prewarning. I probably would.
Has anyone ordered anything from these guys: www.instrumentsonline.nl/ ? They have something I fancy (if Google translate is anything to go by) but they aren't yer Thomann or one of the well known UK guys so I'm shooting a bit blind. Any experiences with returns etc would also be appreciated! Thanks all Rod
It's not that 'Bach Rickenbecker bas' is it?

I thought I'd dreamed it too until I saw my latest bank statement....phew! Then of course I'll have the obligatory rant about thieving b@stard ebay fees. -

Sold a rare Unibass pedal on eBay recently with the original box. Wrapped it in bubble wrap, put it in a big jiify bag and took it down the post office. Arrived in Northern Ireland next day for the princely sum of £6:50 recorded delivery. No drama, no issues. It does happen folks. -
Been listening to a bit of Edgar Broughton Band (cheapo 5 CD box set). They were (are?) a better band than I'd originally given them credit for though it's a bit mixed.

Yes I was referring to Black Keys on Jools, RB were on an earlier program and clearly a duo. Didn't do a lot for me but each to their own.

There's a new album of all original material coming out July (Heaven and Earth) and a long US tour to go with it so they might take a break after that and then do some European dates to promote the album perhaps? Glad they do, it's another useful tool in learning stuff I might need for a gig. I never used to bother looking at them but I've actually found watching someone else play lines I've needed to learn recently has speeded up my getting to grips with them. I don't much care whether they are doing it as a show reel, ego boost or genuinely want to help others learn the lines, its just another learning resource for me.

Peter Cetera - Who was keeping this guy quiet?
KevB replied to achknalligewelt's topic in General Discussion
Saw this band recently in a pub, not sure if the singer can 'smooth' his voice out to do the AOR type stuff but his voice is way too good for pub gigs (very wide range and good power too), might be worth getting in touch as I recall him saying he did extra work as a wedding singer so presumably the main band doesn't take all his time up. Maybe a long shot... Alternatively poach the guy from 'A Foreigner's Journey' -
Guess it depends where you are playing the basslines, if he's doing a lot of work up around the 12th fret or higher (easier to play chordal stuff up there?) then an added lower octave would fill out the bottom end frequencies so it would sound fuller. By coincidence the black keys were on jools recently too - doesn't look like a 2 piece band for live work.
-
Getting a bit confused here. Are there a lot of songs in his solo stuff that has two separate bass parts at the same time? I can imagine the need for a second guitar in the live band but 2 basses seems a bit weird (I know there are bands that have 2 bassists but I wouldn't thought Lynott's material would need it).

Just to echo others, well done guys for organising and the others who brought stuff to eat & drink. Trying to fight the flab a bit at the moment so had curb my desire to launch myself at Mrs Sharman's quality offerings (did that sound a bit dirty?). OK, I caved and had a rock cake later in the day. Good to chat with folks as ever, I came away like I usually do from these things wishing I'd spent a bit less time nattering and more actually playing a few basses but there will be other meetups in future I'm sure. The precision deluxe remained unclaimed so who knows it might get touted round again some time unless I unleash it on eBay instead.

Another wedding gig in a venue I nor the rest of the band had done before.Enormous room with very high ceiling, reverb-a-go-go. As the band leader has an aversion to monitors and we don't mic the kick drum I was struggling to make any connection with the drums all night, guessing the timing or actually leading with my bass instead far too often for my liking. Due to a cancellation last weekend and also missing a gig for a family do I realised it was the thick end of a month since I'd played even one full set never mind two. No wonder my fingers are aching a bit this morning.Just to add to the fun and games it was in an upper floor room of a conference centre and at some time during the evening the kids at the event had managed to break the lift so we humped all the gear out by the stairs at the end of the night. Felt sorry for the DJ, he'd got massive PA and lights to shift after he'd done but we were packed and off by then, they were under instruction to finish midnight prompt and clear the building by 12:30 but as we drove off it didn't look like that was going to happen and the staff were getting into grumpy mode so time to count the cash and get outta Dodge...
Yes indeed. I've been lucky enough to meet a fair few at various bass bashes - lovely guys and gals, all of them. I've also been to a couple of gigs/jams and seen a few of the lads playing in earnest - gjones, BarneyG and KevB. Each one an inspiration. :-) Not to mention Steve Lawson of course.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, I can assure you is the ONLY time you will ever see my name and Steve Lawson's mentioned in the same sentence in relation to bass playing. I think I was probably 'inspirational' in the sense of 'I really should get proper lessons or I'll end up like that' I recall going to my first ever bassbash in Northampton (may have been whilst it was still bassworld?) and watching Dood play, virtually gave up the instrument on the spot. Then I realised every other bugger there was miles above my standard and I'd have to up my game but I'm still gigging so I guess I can do a job at some level.

But did anyone finally identify the one E Costello was holding in the Sun pic?

Would have tried to see them in Wolverhampton but I'll be preparing for a lakes trip that week. I wasn't aware of Sheehan's link to the McMillan 12-step development, interesting. Still haven't got round to buying one.

Clever ploy to get the elephant to stand in front of the box, she'll never spot it.

Metallica - off to never never Glastonbury land

They can play where they like, never been bothered enough to see them yet and Donington is only just up the road from me. I'll probably tune in to BBC coverage to see what state Robert Plant's voice is in these days and maybe catch a bit of Kaiser Chiefs but that'll probably be it, unless Kate Bush makes a surprise appearance (if it's going to happen at all you'd think this would be the year). -
Come on Len, you regularly gigging types always need a backup right?

I suspect the only way I'll cover both events is to have all my gigging gear in the car and go straight from one to the other. I'll assume the car park at the school is going to be fairly secure? car has tinted windows anyway so not easy to see what I've got in it. I can just bring in the P deluxe and leave the rest outside. Sounds like there will be more than enough rigs as it is.
Thanks for the insertion 'Shell, I hardly felt a thing. I've got to be there really. What else could I do with 4 packets of chocolate biscuits? (2 of them being chocolate hob-nobs too).
I actually found a 'Pennywise' assortment pack in a poundshop, I didn't think they still did them. So I'll throw them into the mix too along with my original offer to bring teabags/instant coffee/milk. I'm off to Asda tomorrow so if you're all really lucky you might get doughnuts as well. Looking like I'll have to leave early though as I have a wedding gig to do and they want us there setting up earlier than a normal pub would. Anyone looking for a mint condition US Fender P deluxe (active) bring your chequebook or a lot of cash

Saw him playimng it last night. Chris is a big lad these days, it looked the most horribly uncomfortable object to play. Bet he's glad it's just for one song.

Still going to Leicester tonight, I'll be the one in the *cough* 'unofficial' beige tour T shirt that has 'Full Circle Tour' on the back with the band members in red. Feel free to tap me on the shoulder (once you've got me one in from the bar)

Would still like to see Epsilon sometime, ever get beyond Watford gap?
