Of course you don't have to be in a trib exclusively, as Tony C pointed out he was doing other projects at the same time as the Budgie trib so if you happen to pick a more obscure band that you mainly do for th elove of it then with the right logistics the various band members can still do other covers or originals bands and maintain a full diary. I think some people might actually prefer this, I would. The thought of doing just 1 trib act all the time and nothing else wouldn't keep me interested for very long, probably go a bit mental actually.

That would probably be 'Hell bent Forever'? I didn't see them when they last played the Greyhound (never was a big JP fan tbh) but I'm reliably informed they packed the place so the demand seems to be there at least for the time being. Hope it comes together Tony. Some of the biggest crowds I've seen there in the last couple of years have been for rock tributes.

I had a C4 in antique amber for a while, lovely finish and very lightweight and playable. The tone was just a bit too 'polite' for my liking so eventually I moved it on for about what I paid for it.

I'll be doing the low end stuff at The Plainsman this Sat (May 24th) so feel free to pop in and show me how the tunes should really be played We're usually at this venue last Sat in each month but it was brought forward in May so they can show the Froch fight live next Sat without it interrupting our flow which is jolly decent of them.

The main music pub I frequent usually has its busiest nights when a tribute act is on. Len has a good point, many venues probably subsidise putting on low-draw originals acts with the full house tribs and covers. The truth is that as a whole there probably wouldn't be as many venues able to put music on for the originals bands if the tribs and covers weren't pulling in the numbers to make them viable as venues at all. Bugger, I've now contributed to a thread I wasn't going to again as it's come up 4 or 5 times before in various guises....

I rather suspect DC picks his backing band members as much for their singing ability these days as their instrumental qualities There were always some b vox in WSnake but now they are doubling up on the lead lines half the time too.

I have to admit when I heard the remake of Rock around the clock i thought 'Yeah, see Mark you can play properly when you want to!'
Any thoughts on the notion of Blackmore, Paice, Coverdale, and Hughes coming back together and doing it one last time?. They are all still fine performers and if they knocked their heads together they could still put on a stellar show.
Wouldn't think Blackers would be remotely interested and Coverdale's voice is probably worse (in comparison to what it was in its heday) than Gillan's these days. Hughes is still in relatively fine fettle and with the demise of Black Country Communion would probably be up for a final big payday. Paice is quite happy doing what he's done most of his career - be the drummer in Deep Purple!

Coldplay album review. (Possibly a bit harsh!! :) )

Can't say I made it to the end of any of the tunes they did on Jools recently. If the source of inspiration is the breakup of a long term relationship it's hardly going to be very upbeat though is it? -
The Hangman's beautiful Daughter by The Incredible String Band. Nice folky stuff to listen to whilst pedalling down the canal towpath to work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgQuVeMOyAk

Gillan had nodes removed from his throat around 82-83 after an exhausting 5 years of endless recording/touring cycles with the Gillan band. Instead of taking time off he got drunk with Toni Iommi and agreed to join Sabbath. This is probably not the whole truth but there is no doubt doing the Born Again album and subsequent tour did his voice no favours at that stage. Then DP mkII reformed and they were back on the long tour treadmill again. Eventually he had to rethink how he sang completely and in fact the tours for albums such as Bananas and Rapture of the Deep saw him singing better than he had done for some time. Considering he's now approaching his 69th birthday it's surprising just what he can do rather than what he can't. Saw them last year, did a track off latest album called 'Vincent Price'. There's a tricky high note right at the end, he nailed it on the night I saw them. It's less about the range these days though and more of the phrasing which he's always been excellent at, the Frank Sinatra of Rock. And if you get to chat to him for a length of time he's a lot brighter than you might think, does a lot of dumbing down 'acting' in some interviews.

It's not often that absolutely nothing grabs me in an entire 'later' but they managed it this week sadly, fast forwarded through pretty much every act. Not been much in previous shows in this series either but one or two performers I've enjoyed. It's that sort of show which is why I haven't seen it 'live' for years, always record it.

Peter Cetera - Who was keeping this guy quiet?
KevB replied to achknalligewelt's topic in General Discussion
The diabolically massive hits you mean? Always the problem. Stay musically interesting and play to small crowds of musos or 'churn out' stuff that sells millions of albums that actually allows you to keep making albums at all. A moral dilemma indeed. -
Still in good nick for 52, not heard any of most recent album though, apparently more of a return to country roots.

Though Gillan was probably a bit past his prime by '84 he was also suffering with a very heavy cold for the gig that was filmed and subsequently released as 'Perfect Strangers' DVD. It was doing the rounds as a bootleg for years before. I think it was touch and go if the gig would go ahead at all at one point.
-
Oh go on then. Still remain in my top ten fave bands of all time. What more can I say to those unfamiliar but get out there and hear 'em for yourselves. Their history is one of the best soap operas in rock n roll.

Ahh, so that's what a 'cello face' looks like.

Really don't like doing Friday gigs after a long hard week at work and true to form I played like a bag o' shoite last night at a wedding gig. Fortunately the booze had been flowing so we pretty much got away with it, in fact the groom gave us a bit extra over the agreed fee so we could get some drinks in and no grumbles from anyone at the end of the night. We even managed to keep just within limits of volume monitor and didn't trigger a power out. Hard to concentrate with one eye on the monitor and being temporarily blinded by a parcan that had been aimed in my face about 18'' away by our thoughtful vocalist. Another gig tonight so by end of first song last night will be a vague memory at best.

Metallica - off to never never Glastonbury land
KevB replied to KiOgon's topic in General Discussion
Same old problem with me and auditions for established , big-name acts . They just want a bass player , not another sex symbol in the band .
It's the trousers, you know we've told you about them before. About actually wearing them for starters. -

Go on Dingus, admit it. You were one of those guys who auditioned after Newstead left. Did you make it onto the video? -
I have to say that in none of the bands I've been in was I required to provide online 'evidence' to get an audition but I can see how it would be useful for those hiring to whittle it down to the more promising players, hence my days are probably numbered! Of course a good youtube performance doesn't guarantee the person will really be able to do it in front of a proper audience (assuming that is what's required) or they won't be an utter knob in general. A good recommendation from someone the hiring party knows and trusts and who had worked with the potential player would still go furthest in my book but that's not always possible. The band I'm in currently with didn't (to my knowledge) ask anyone I'd played with before about me nor did they audition me, they took me on trust and I first played with them at a paying gig to a packed pub. I still find that utterly bizarre.
-
OK, as I said the difference to me sounds minimal. Quite possible, given variabilities in pickups etc that if you or I played enough of them we might find a modern non-walnut that sounds like your walnut and there may be a walnut out there that sounds like your regular 4003. When all's said and done the important thing is it sounds like a Ric

Sabbath gig at Hyde park..said to be the last .
KevB replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Can't say it would bother me much if they called it a day. Saw the reunion gig 15 years ago and thought Ozzy looked well past it then, Dio's dead and doubt Sabbath fans would really accept anyone new any more. Wasn't that impressed with the 13 album either. It must be difficult if you are still enjoying it and basically it's the only thing you know how to do but if it's getting too much for them and they really are just 'doing it for the fans' rather than themselves it's probably time to quit. -
This sounds fun. I'd love to include my humble MIM Fender P in the test. I've heard it played by KevB through his rig and it definitely sounded a lot better than when I play it! It would be fun to discover if people can tell it's 'just' a MIM.
It's not me, it's the rig honest I looked at my diary and I've booked the week off the day after this bash as I'm going up to the lakes for part of it. And I own 2 P basses. Must...resist...must...resist...
