Glasto, who hasn't played there that should have done?
KevB replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
As there was recently another Tull thread, did they ever play Glasto? Seen conflicting reports, one guy who was there for the first in 1970 says he 'enjoyed playing with the likes of Jethro Tull' but they are not listed in 1970's lineup on wiki (a lot of early years lineups are incomplete however). They did IOW in early 70's so were very much a 'festival band' around the time. Also confusing matters is that Ian A Anderson (folk singer) WAS on the Glasto '70 bill. You'd have thought a later mid to late-70's Tull in all their pomp would be a shoe-in for Glasto but I don't think it happened. -
Alannah Myles - Black Velvet. Good or bad song?
yes.... agree, A bit lame really, same same same...
Can you post your current typical set so we can see how 'different' a successful gigging band can be? -
Is it? I thought that was just a one off a few years back where the had a year off? I'm pretty sure I read Michael Eavis has already confirmed he has booked his headliners for next year also.
Ah, I'd read somewhere that it was going to be the norm to skip a year but turns out they will do it every 3 or 4 years to allow pasture to properly regenrate. My mistake.

Alannah Myles - Black Velvet. Good or bad song?

I'd be happy to do it in a band if there was a female lead vox that did it justice. Come to think of it I'm sure the band I was in with a female singer did it, been a few years...With a bit of imagination it can be mashed together with Whitesnake's 'Crying In The Rain'. -
I suppose I could do some Googling myself on this, but what's the general feeling of the people from Glastonbury town and the neighbouring areas, do they approve / disapprove of the festival being held there each year? I've no doubt it brings money in the neighbourhood, but I'd sure as hell not look forward to nearly 200,000 descending on my town each year, and all the madness and chaos it brings.
Not being pedantic but it's every two years isn't it? I think they have a policy of letting the fields recover for a year before the next festival rolls around. M Eavis has much less involvement with the festival now, mostly run by his daughter. Dad concentrates on the dairy farm these days.

I started getting quite bored with 'Budapest' as for several tours they seemed to wheel it out long after it should have retired from the setlist IMHO.

Yes I saw HV set as well and it was as well as I'd heard IA sing for a while (shorter set no doubt helped) but seen him since and it had really deteriorated. I'd also heard it went as result of the (long) Broadsword tour but it was still serviceable in a way up to around 5 years ago, maybe a bit more. It really seems to have got noticeably worse since then to me. Like you say the extended instrumentals making up more and more of the set are a dead giveaway. Read in an interview that Barre was getting fed up of keyboards making up more of the Tull sound and there are no keys in his band unless he's changed the lineup.
-
Barre's been doing his own band mainly focusing on very old Tull tunes for over a year. Not sure of the details but it seems him and Anderson aren't really talking. It's a shame as he's been a cornerstone of the band for so long whilst the rest have come and gone at various times. There's really no difference between Tull and IA solo projects now which is a bit of a shame, as is the state of IA's voice. I could barely watch the last time I saw Tull about 3 or 4 years ago. He takes another singer on tour with him these days, at least for the solo stuff, to help out. It's all got a bit sad. Heard a pro recording of a solo gig on the TAAB2 tour and it was awful.
My faves are Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses and Stormwatch.
I've mentioned in other Tull threads I always consider Stomwatch to be a forgotten classic in their catalog. I too was impressed when I first read that its mostly Anderson on bass, Dark Ages in particuler. He certainly knows his way round a fretboard.

Still one of my top ten bands. Think I have pretty much all the official albums plus one or two bootlegs.

Tried learning the bassline once, gave up. I know when I'm beat

Just one of those guys who you couldn't imagine doing much else than music, just seemed to flow from him. Not really my area so could be wrong but I always got the impression he was more appreciated by other artists than he was by the general public and maybe didn't have such a global public recognition as he might have deserved.

The other thing I like about Sheehan is when you see interviews with him about his approach and general playing is you don't all this mumbo jumbo psychobabble philosophy. He makes sense nearly all the time and has a rational reason as to why he's doing what he's doing and how, plus he can communicate it in a way that players of pretty much any ability can take on board. Don't ask me to try to emulate him though, bit of a one off!

Gigged last night & doing so again tonight so if I catch any at all it'll be on iplayer repeats. Probably have a look in on Kaiser Chiefs and Robert Plant, not much else I'm that fussed about. Given the weather into the bargain I'm glad I'm not there.

Yep, if you don't feel comfy playing a string it's going to affect you no matter how good it sounds. Think I've just been lucky in that the various types I've had were all acceptable to me from the feel perspective. Still don't quite like that feel of brand new rounds but it soon wears off after a few gigs.

I have one (Behringer) from a previous band that I'm not using currently, welcome to pick it up and have a try out before buying one if you are ever travelling through Nottingham.

As a polar opposite to the current band I'm in, back when I was a naieve starter to 'proper bands' I successfully auditioned for a band full of guys who had been around a fair while. We rehearsed every week with very few breaks and it was nearly a year before my first gig with them (I recall we lost and had to replace a drummer along the way) at which point the band leader announced his heart had gone out of performing live and we went our separate ways after that performance. And it wasn't even a paid gig! Looking back it was quite clear in retrospect that the 'band practice' was the bandleader's main interest of itself and wasn't really there to prepare for real gigs at all. All part of the learning curve I guess.

If they were deemed 'special' enough and were likely to be discontinued then you could buy a bulk lot and use those vacuum bags intended to suck air out of bulky clothes to fit them into small spaces. With so much air removed from around them I'd expect strings to last decades if kept cool and dry (put some silica gel granules in the vac bag before deflating maybe?). For the bands I've been in over the years and numerous strings I've tried I've found the strings contribute marginally more to my overrall sound than say the colour my bass is painted but that's about it. Plenty others feel different and that's fine. Currently using strings I found on eBay for a little over a fiver a set, work fine for me.

I used to work with a drummer who's overambitious kit included a floor tom who's sole purpose it seemed was to put the set list on. And he still expected evryone to muck in loading it back in the van at the end of the gig.

I'm not going to get overly involved in this discussion but I would say that if Limelight need to go with a new logo of their own then not to go down the 'as close to a fender logo as I can legally get away with' in terms of font and styling. I think it just looks a bit cheap and desperate. Go with something that seems to fit the styling of the bass sure but make it your own.

If we're being picky I'd have liked Brian May to have tried a few more guitar sounds as well but was never a huge fan so they can do what they like.

I started having a dabble with 'Don't Stop Me Now' the other night for fun and I doubt I'll ever quite fully nail it like he did and I expect this isn't really considered one of his trickier lines. This seems to be a thread through many people's take on him - you don't quite fully appreciate what he's doing until you need to start looking into it a bit deeper and this often a hallmark of a 'quality act' IMO.
