"Real bass players don't use picks"
steve-bbb replied to EdwardHimself's topic in General Discussion
Mostly just 15 year old kids who think just because they have learned how to play their favourite Mark King song using just their fingers, it means they are the best bass player who has ever lived and everyone who uses a bit of plastic must therefore be inferior. Do you think any of these dickheads have ever tried using a pick for any length of time? Maybe if they did, they would realise that it actually does wear out your hand, trying to play fast and accurately on just one string. Picks aren't just for pussies or failed guitarists. I use a pick maybe about 75% of the time. I try to let the music dictate what I play, rather than just because that's what my favourite fret-****** does... /rant.
these must be some of the very same people i see posting ads on joinmyband and similar usually my age inhibits me from applying to join their little band (but moreover decency and good taste is the real answer) -
My being in another band: bit of an issue for someone else.

Ebay almost double the final value fee, bad news for bass sellers.
steve-bbb replied to funkgod's topic in General Discussion
i got three extremley good buys on evilbay about 18 months ago - havent touched it since after getting bombarded with their sh1tty emails about 'no insertion fee' weekends i thought id put some low value stuff up - big mistake - no such thing as a free meal is there! absolutely no intentions whatsoever to sell anything on there and have grown so dismayed with it that it is now way down my list of places to look if im considering buying something - even rareities can usually be tracked down on specialist forums like statii etc etc -

tell the main drummer to stop being a precious diva and that its ok as youve got a dep to do the pub gigs if main drummer gets arsey just tell him to think of it as a stunt double or is it the old case of main drummers says "its my ball so i choose whos on my team" on a serious note i can see he is trying to up the ante and get you considered as a more 'serious' covers band and there is something to the argument that a potential function customer might be slightly deterred if they are aware of you locally and know of your reputation and that you play loads of pub gigs - they could make the automatic assumption that youre 'just a pub covers band' and maybe have doubts if youre up to the standard of something a tiny bit more upmarket fee wise one possible solution would be to have core band members (along with your drummer dep and any other flexible deps etc) and form it up as two separately named bands - one to do all the pubs and a second band which you actrively promote as a bit more 'prestige' to go for the bigger bucks gigs just my 2p fwiw
you mean the 5¼" slot? That's easy. You just have to select all the audio and I think Audacity has a "Normalize" [sic] effect. Otherwise you will just have to bump up the gain. Whatever it is, it will be under the "effects" tab.
thanks i moved thread to the recording forum -after a few hours of faffing about i eventually found the trim pot channel insert to boost the input gain - record and normailse - works a treat

Strange band situation not sure how to react
steve-bbb replied to Chrismanbass's topic in General Discussion
Looks like I'll have to look forward to this crap if I join a band in the future :-( And I thought it was just get discovered and make a mint :-(
that all depends whether or not you end up in a band run by the sort of people who when they were kids used the old 'its my ball and i get to choose whos on my team' schtick -
You mean like one of these?... http://www.pittjug.o...e_drive_61.html I don't think they make em anymore.
indeed - not good reviews on the spec on them found this though http://www.tape-2-pc...CFQwjfAodBi0lZA which gives me an idea i'd probably be better picking up an old cassette walkman somewhere and shoving the headphone output straight into audacity edit .... if any nice basschatter has an old cassette walkman theyd like to recycle ?
-
does anybody know of such a thing as a peripheral cassette tape deck to fit in a 5" slot in the PC? i used to have a Digital Tape for backups years ago that was such a device but was wondering if an audio cassette tape version ever existed? ta muchly

Strange band situation not sure how to react
steve-bbb replied to Chrismanbass's topic in General Discussion
i very much doubt that the person who gave them the new gigs on the back of their street party gig insisted that they keep the exact same line up sounds to an old cynic like me that they are not happy with you playing in more than one band - i'd let them know politely but firmly exactly what i thought of their passive-aggressive schtick -
What Guitar Should I Buy for this Budget?
steve-bbb replied to Schnozzalee's topic in General Discussion
A good friend of mine has been through a string of guitars & always has at least 15 hanging on the wall of his home studio. He has a few PRS's but his favourites for the past couple of years have been the Suhr Guthrie Govan models. I've heard these playing funky Nile Rodgers type stuff through to very heavy rock and they seem to sound great in any situation
or almost identical appearance Ibanez S series or if you can find an old fgm100 going cheap - amazing sound from the stock Ibanez F1 and F2 pups but hideous colours - body colour could be easily addressed but unfortunately they had a sharktooth shaped fret inlay marker in the body colour - they do sadly look very dated and somewhat tacky but if you see one dont pass it by without picking it up and having a go as they are a world away from JEMS and the like and imho much more versatile -
Be Bop Deluxe and Yes records that really grabbed my attention.
i was 16 and had a saturday job and discovered be bop deluxe and was so impressed i went and bought all five albums in one week after seeing them at hammersmith odeon and then began figuring out loads of the guitar and bass parts on my black jap copy LPs (4 & 6) -
nice driving groove to this one - the live versions is about 3 or 4 tones lower than the original studio cut which has a lot more drive and urgency - great song from a very underrated mr scaggs http://youtu.be/JgtOsZLaXS4 http://youtu.be/frQ6NoaFSwg
