On the one hand, I bet this guy's wife gets a LOT of "headaches" and your bass just happens to be the latest cause. On the other hand, you could ask somebody to record you for a 20 seconds or so with their phone or something. This would be enough to see if the bass is really too loud but not something more subtle, like just not sitting nicely in the mix. Sometimes it is the cranky people that have the honesty to put you on to a problem, even if they do it the wrong way.
there is also the option that it could be an acoustic issue with the room and maybe mrs miggins was unfortunately sat in one of those 'high spots' where the acoustics resonate your bass frequencies out of proportion
Maybe I'll suggest he takes up ventriloquism...
my tingly spider senses tell me this may not be too far from the truth perhaps?? maybe Mr Miggins isnt actually too bothered, and perhaps it is 'she who must be obeyed' who is using poor old Mr Miggins as her mouthpiece as for the DFA knob ... turn it all the way up to eleven

replied to an ad about a month ago for a function band who responded straight away saying they would see how much response they got and set up auditions accordingly - so several weeks go by and get an email to confirm auditions and do i still want to attend - replied yes - then their reply comes back all of three days before the audition with the caveat check our facebook page for the songs we will be concentrating on at the audition the facebook page contains 22 videos - looking at their set list there is not actually a great deal that i am unfamiliar with and could happily just go in cold for 90% ...edit - i would add that in their favour it would be reasonable to assume that anyone who was serious about auditioning for a busy function band really should have a good working knowledge of at least two thirds of the set anyway to be able to hit the ground running so to speak working under pressure is not the issue here but is this not ridiculously unrealistic expectations? - am i the only one thinking this is a bit much? - if Brian May himself were to offer me the Queen bass gig im sure i could make sure I learn the entire set in a day if necessary - but a local function band?? really??
Sorry - does very little for me. Impressive and all that... but just rather dull and unfulfilling. Horrible tone too (at least through my PC speakers). Now this, however.... Or this....
get thee hence to a decent set of speakers and check the tone .... it's LUSH !
Oh yes, indeedy. I wish I could unlearn everything and go back to the time when a good song just overwhelmed me in its totality. TBH, I'd give up playing, just to get that back. .
strangely i do sometimes get recollection not just of the tune itself but also the time/setting of when that tune made its first big impact for example - i can distinctly recall the moves 'flowers in the rain' on the wireless at about age of 5 - and if i recall it in my memory then im hearing it not only associated with that setting but also crystal clear in its entirety and for some reason it is a pop tune that i never tire of - i find i f i have to learn a song then i will listen in depth and may spot things hidden away in the arrangement that werent at first noticeable but most of the time its all there but predominantly the bass lines and chord progressions
and the more complex forms of jazz. In the words of Sir Thomas Beecham, I just "like the noise that it makes"
whilst liking the crazy noise i find i i can analyze it and read the movement of a good solo like a book - prob why im such a big fan or mr holdsworth = similarly pat metheny has written some beautiful 'simple' tunes but i do like just as much the wild guitar solos on the roland guitar synth too
-
ok here goes when you hear music how would you describe your own personal experience of it and how does you recollection of it come back at you? we often make many assumptions that we all perceive things pretty much the same but from person to person there are always some subtle and surprising differences personally i hear it in very great detail and even from about age of 3 or 4 there was always something that seemed to grab my attention with the bass lines - as for recall i seem to be able to recall it in my head in a tape recorder fashion exact as the recording (to draw an analogy i would describe it similar to people who have photographic recall of visual scenes and imagery) .......
When I am trying to learn a bassline from ear I sort of sing the bassline and make up words that fit the rhythm so in effect the bassline becomes the melody line and the words help with the phrasing. As you can imagine these songs often result in having wonderful tunes crafted by such masters as Jamerson, Jack Bruce, JPJ et al but bloody awful nonsensical lyrics. Anyone else do it this way? I think learning by ear is very difficult especially as my ears arent what they were when I was younger and picking out the bassline cleanly is very hard for me. I am learning Darling Dear at the moment and I am in the middle of crafting the lyrics which include a bit about a Hobbit going to the dentists! Unless there are easier ways to learn by ear my family have to put up with these bizarre utterences. What strategies have you used to aid learning by ear?
you're in distinguished company - i seem to recall an interview where steve vai describes using a similar process with complex melodic lines
I'm a pleb to all this, but very pleased at increasing popularity to MP3 alternatives. (Was beginning to believe a whole generation will be brought up on crappy quality playback and this end up reducing the quality of recordings) What do you play FLAC and/or APE files, a laptop? Any portable players play these formats?
There is an iPhone app called capricio for playing flac . I would recommend FreeRIP for ease of use for ripping converting and tagging
