1. as for the music imo the best pieces are the ones which are subtle and sublime with that underlying sense of pathos such as oh no i dont believe it (no tthe victor meldrew cover version) and son of orange county i just cant believe, you are such a fool
 2.
He was certainly pretty amazing live as were his band.
which one! its not just the individual band members in any given line up - he had a sense of synergy of knowing which musicians to pick who would work well together with the sum of the parts being massively greater than the individuals - if you just threw all his band members into a hat and picked out names at random to form a fresh band id wager that you might end up straying into that 'dull and uninteresting supergroup' territory he is often criticised for being a but of a control freak but he was a superb band leader and he had a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve and knew how to go about it - how many musicians could honestly say they would turn down the zappa gig if they were offered it? if you did then you would run the risk of being compared with the record company that turned down the beatles
 3.
There was a B'ham based function band on Partysounds about a year ago who were looking for a Bass Player that didnt smell of Werthers Originals. Probably an age thing.
went along for an audition a couple of months ago with a bunch of just turning pro mid 20s former music students - really sound bunch, very focussed, very proficient, without being over earnest and irritating - they said they didnt have a problem with age and did say that most of the bass players they had auditioned were 'about my age' currently playing with two set ups - a function band (all about my age ish) and an occasional band for a local singer/songwriter where i am the oldest band member by 200% can only assume that bands who insist on being ageist are purely interested in style/image over substance?
 4.
has he called you yet to see if he got the spot ?
better still call him back and tell him he's got the gig
 5. have you been watching back to the future again?

 8.
Well, I hope this counts as helpful. Played a number of 5 string basses (while in the 'early learning' phase ) and landed on an Ibanez BTB575. It stood out because of its solid B string and after getting home, I realised that it was because of its 35" scale. I loved it to bits and found that it differed to a 4 string in a way that I liked. I owned it for quite a while and decided that if I was comfortable with a 5 string, it would be silly not to buy another one to replace my Ibanez, so I bought another one and was still loving it, up to the point where I sold it. And so now i'm looking for another 5 string to replace it. It sounds strange too, but I didn't get on much with my previous 5 string, whereas my Ibanez made me feel like the B string should be played more often because it sounded to clear and bright.
+1 once you find one with a B that doesnt go all flubby all the time they are an absolute joy and imo the 35 makes all the difference with the low B clarity
 9. its also a good altrernative to protect raw wood if youve just sanded your floorboards and want to leave them unvarnished as for the toluene smell just cut up a few raw onions (across the rings) and leave in the room with door shut - not sure exactly how it works but i guess its some sort of reverse osmosis thing but all the toluene vapour gets absorbed by the onions ive also used it on some flatpack raw unfinished ikea stuff - gives a nice shiny natural finish and the pine still colours well as it ages and just needs a quick top up with a thin coat of wax a couple of times a year
 10. you mean my beautiful quilted maple veneer front does absolutlely nothing at all for the sound but look purdeeee?
 11.
Teach him to use the telephone and to speak with his mouth.
but be careful ... anything more and he might stop breathing
 12. can get on fine with 6 but not so with 5 - as jazzneck says above.... the open E is the home position for me and the open B is like added extra bonus personally its is also a matter of symmetry too - the 6 to me is the 4 with one extra both top and bottom whereas the 5 seems unbalanced and i find myself occasionally getting the B confused for the E
 13.
Precisely. Like those lot who are just like "+++AWESOME+++ new band looking for drummer, bass player, rhythm guitarist and singer. Must be age 14-17 etc..."
...... ability not as important as commitment and ideas and enthusiasm ..................... </yawn>
 14.
Mostly just 15 year old kids who think just because they have learned how to play their favourite Mark King song using just their fingers, it means they are the best bass player who has ever lived and everyone who uses a bit of plastic must therefore be inferior. Do you think any of these dickheads have ever tried using a pick for any length of time? Maybe if they did, they would realise that it actually does wear out your hand, trying to play fast and accurately on just one string. Picks aren't just for pussies or failed guitarists. I use a pick maybe about 75% of the time. I try to let the music dictate what I play, rather than just because that's what my favourite fret-****** does... /rant.
these must be some of the very same people i see posting ads on joinmyband and similar usually my age inhibits me from applying to join their little band (but moreover decency and good taste is the real answer)
 15.
Especially as 'others' are having problems with such testing ditties as 'Maybe Tomorrow' by the Stereophonics
RUN AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

 20. i got three extremley good buys on evilbay about 18 months ago - havent touched it since after getting bombarded with their sh1tty emails about 'no insertion fee' weekends i thought id put some low value stuff up - big mistake - no such thing as a free meal is there! absolutely no intentions whatsoever to sell anything on there and have grown so dismayed with it that it is now way down my list of places to look if im considering buying something - even rareities can usually be tracked down on specialist forums like statii etc etc
 21. when you use your headstock/string-retainer as a cigarette holder
 22. tell the main drummer to stop being a precious diva and that its ok as youve got a dep to do the pub gigs if main drummer gets arsey just tell him to think of it as a stunt double or is it the old case of main drummers says "its my ball so i choose whos on my team" on a serious note i can see he is trying to up the ante and get you considered as a more 'serious' covers band and there is something to the argument that a potential function customer might be slightly deterred if they are aware of you locally and know of your reputation and that you play loads of pub gigs - they could make the automatic assumption that youre 'just a pub covers band' and maybe have doubts if youre up to the standard of something a tiny bit more upmarket fee wise one possible solution would be to have core band members (along with your drummer dep and any other flexible deps etc) and form it up as two separately named bands - one to do all the pubs and a second band which you actrively promote as a bit more 'prestige' to go for the bigger bucks gigs just my 2p fwiw
