    Kev, I'm struggling with this one without examining the bass.. I cant see it being the pup as its not somting that they normallt do. it could have a loose pole piece but arent the EMGs sealed? Im wondering if its a pre amp problem.... Or an amp problem. You need to try the bass thru another amp to eliminate the amp, and then start looking into the pre amp onboard.

    Is this on the open string and have you checked the obvious... fret rattle, loose fret, loose saddle etc? have you tried your bass thru another amp to check its not a speaker cone or similar?

    I'm trying some GHS strings (I use mainly flatties, so cant recommned a set of r-wounds) they seem very good for what they cost certainly as good as D'adds. Probably not much help.

    +1 to above.... its going to be very difficult to evidnec it was or wasnt delivered to him without a traking label... I'd rather pay more now than lose more stuff....

    Also check out Seymour Duncans site for lotsa options..... it only has 3 pups but a squizillions of wiring options! Ive done two for my guitarist, both different! Shielding=good idea! bob.

    Ok here goes, If anyone is interested, I'd like to swap my 1993 MIJ Fender HM 5 string for a Highway one P (any color except the daphne blue). Mine is red, with 3 J passive pups and a 5 way switch and Vol + Tone. Rosewood fretboard (47mm @ nut) and slender D neck. New D'addario chromes. Reason for change? it has 9mm spacing at the nut and I cant get used to it. So I want a '08 5P US std. But I do want a Highway 1 P. The wiring was shonky so I've replaced it new Switchcraft pots and socket, it genuinley has 5 different voices. My guitarist was going to have it but hasnt got space, and said.... "Ive got you, so I dont need my own bass" How sweet.!! Pic added now I've taken some.

    Hummn know where your coming from.... I felt let down the same way..... I do know my next one isnt going to cheap, and I wont judge it without plugging it in. I dont think any of them sound as good as 6 stringers.. They just dont have the body volume to produce the rich sound they should...

    Great edition ...... But tell me please..... who would, or could pay [size=6][font="Arial Black"]£1200 [/font][/size] for a cable??? my guitarist uses teh whirlwind cables and they are pretty good. Just wish they had a Neutric switch jack on and I'd have one..
