Alder vs Ash for a Precision body?
The Burpster replied to Beedster's topic in Repairs and Technical
It interests me on two levels Bob, one as a player and one as a curious (and occasional) seller of basses . I'm looking at putting together a Precision at the moment and thought it would be interesting to think more carefully about body woods than I have done in the past. Also, as you know, I've sold the odd Precision in the past, and found that prospective buyers can get very anal about whether it's an alder or ash body, often irrespective of weight (in fact I had one buyer pull out because the body was ash)? So if people are that specific in their tastes, I'm assuning there must be some pretty significant differences between the two, or at least that some people believe there to be? Cheers Chris
C, I absolutely understand you asking the question, but to get an an answer that will satisfy the likes of your (or mine for that matter) curiosity will be very hard if not an impossible ask, as its always going to be hugely subjective.... Why folks get anal about body wood when its covered in paint eludes me I have to say - if its naked and a nice piece of wood then I understand, that one will float your boat more than another.... I guess some folks have a good experience with one type then become convinced that all others will be as good or better? Still Swampy for me and I wont be swayed..... -
Something strange and unexpected has happened....
This means I have to go back through Basschat and revise about 400 posts or appear to be a complete idiot C
C, you always run that risk when you have a strong opinion about things, dont worry tho' bud as I hear humble pie tastes quite nice with cream..... Alder vs Ash for a Precision body?
The Burpster replied to Beedster's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thats a huge ask Chris...... For someone to have experience of 2 indentical basses in all ways except the body wood......? Swamp Ash would be my wood of choice for any build that I can specify choices, but thats based more on taste and aesthetics than any evidence or fact..... Which I'm afraid isn't that helpful..... Sorry. -
Im the same in that i frown on it... I dont even know why! Im a born and bred bassist though, My hand cramps up something horrible when i try and pick play. Such a shame as sometimes you just need that tone.
If you need the 'pick' attack but struggle using a plectrum, have you considered fingerpicks? I've started using them for my Baritone but they sound great on the bass flipped 'round so they are on the pad side of your finger instead of the nail side.... Proper pick sound but finger stylee.....

I guess you've read it, but the bias of valves changes with age.... some amps sound better with them slightly out of balance but most (especially those with lotsa valves) sound and work better with balanced bias.... so effectively you swap them around to get pairs with equal values.

I like the look of this companies kit..... http://biasking.com/ One of them is 'on my GAS list'

The R looks like a straight lift of a Honda Fireblade decal from the 900RR... How sad is that?

Acoustic Basses (sorry if this has been asked before!)
The Burpster replied to rasher80's topic in General Discussion
If you can get an Ovation mic'd up they sound pretty good but they nearly all wont have enough volume to compete with anywhare near 1/2 decent accoustic g'tars. You could try one of the Roland battery powered (busker) amps to give your accoustic the boost it needs (or an electric plugged in). I cant see how they'd complain about that..... http://www.roland.co.uk/guitar_room_catdet.asp?id=Cubestreet Or if your're feeling proper flush.... you can use these on 12V(get yerself a little LiPo pack and Bobs your saviour!) Phil, If you get chance to speak to Mr Smith (of the Paul Reed variety) ask if he's considered making an SE bass which I'm getting tired of continually suggesting..... Oh and a forum addition to the PRS website too.... Ta.....

do you have the gain turned right up? Mine used to do that with an active bass if I had the gain too high...... -
you might get it in a baritone g'tar case mine is about 3" longer than a std g'tar gigbag..... FYI

piece of card on the s-plate to stop scratching it if you wanna keep it andf then gently prise the corners of the knobs with a flat blade screwdriver.... repeat on different sides of knob until it loosens up and then pull it off.

^ darn it .... you beat me to it.....

Dont forget Yamahas..... They are excellent VFM new or 2ndhand..... Practice amp for less that £100 has got to be a Roland Cube 30x in my opinion... you will not get bored..... and by the time you can afford an upgrade you will know what want / need.
