1.
It's finished and I've seen the photos and YOU haven't Nya-nya-na-na-nahh! To be fair to Alan, I'll not post them here until after I've paid him the outstanding balance which will be tomorrow (Tuesday). Got to say, I wanted understated yet still beautiful and I think Alan's done it superbly. I really couldn't be happier with how it's looking. It's a really lovely bit of kit.
Just cruel...
 2.
Thanks for the very comprehensive reply! Really interesting to hear your criteria for the bass - ‘very compact, easy playing, 33” scale’, sounds similar to what I look for in a bass because I’m not the biggest guy out there (read short!) and for me perfect balance and light weight are also very important. I know that there are lots of variants that effect the tone of a bass; pick ups, electronics, construction method etc, and of course the person playing it. That said, I’m personally a great believer in the general tonal characteristics of wood, accepting that each bit of wood is going to be slightly different. Looking forward to seeing the finished bass! Good luck with it all. Cheers Ian
No bother at all mate, happy to help I too am fairly certain the wood makes a difference, but I've seen so many threads being derailed with people putting their 2p in that I thought it'd be best to put in a caveat... Cheers, Eude
 3.
Hi Eude Love the look of your ACG 5 string and the wood choice for your six I recon is going to be really striking. Just wondered how much the wood was chosen for it’s aesthetic appeal and how much for the tonal properties? I’ve never had the chance to play any ACG’s but they do look really interesting, how do you find the balance and weight of them? Cheers Ian
Hey Ian, glad you like my bass, and the one that's on the way The wood on the one on the way were mainly chosen for the sound, however, there's a a lot of debate as to how much wood choice effects tone and whether or not it is consistent, but here's why I chose the woods involved on that particular bass... I went for the Ziracote top, purely because I like dark wood tops, it's a really unique and fairly hard to get hold of wood. It'll be a fairly thin top with a black veneer underneath, so I don't think there'll be enough of it to effect the sound. I went for the medium density Ash body, as, in my experience, a heavy Ash body adds a nice but of mid-range grunt to a bass's tone. Ideally the heavier the better, but I don't want to kill myself standing up with the bass, so medium weight seemed a nice compromise. The Wenge back, is purely cosmetic. The Wenge/Maple neck, I went for the Wenge, as it lends itself to a bit more natural mid-range grunt with a softer high end, again like ash. I think as it's dense and fairly open grained. The maple stringers are purely just to look nice. The Ebony fingerboard, again mainly cosmetic. I tend to like a slightly figured rosewood board if it's available, but Alan reckoned a nice bit of Ebony would be better, so happy to go with his advice on that... On the subject of balance, every ACG I've played has balanced perfectly, they're very VERY well thought out designs which balance perfectly in the visual sense too, the asymmetrical neck profile feels loverly in the hand and can be a lot better for your hand's health with regards to avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome, surprised it's not more common. The weight of ACGs are very changeable, all depends on the wood, but most of them bar Scoop's "Lazarus" have been somewhere from lightweight through to comfortable. "Lazarus" is made out of very very dense woods and is fairly heavy, however once on a strap, it sounds so nice and hangs so well you don't notice it at all, again down to the good design I think. It's hope that my bass will look and sound as nice as that particular bass My ACG Finn SC weighs somewhere between 7 and 8 lbs, depending on the scale's accuracy, which is silly light down to the very light Swamp Ash body, and the balance on it is superb! If you got any other questions dude, you know where I am! Eude EDIT: Full of typos, recovering for a 3 day trip in Islay for a stag doo, lots and lots of whisky consumed...
 4. Looking great el Pedro! That Walnut is particularly lovely. Usually Black Walnut is disappointingly light, but that is gorgeous... Loverly contrast going on between that and the holly too. Eude
 5.
Mmmm.. Ebony - nice indeed but what's that bit of wood at the end?
Ha ha, it's the heid! <drool>The neck's Wenge and Flamed Maple</drool> Eude
 6. Some work done on the neck Eude
 7.
Thanks eude! I know it's a long way off but I'm really excited about it. I've basically got a year to source all the necessary bits for the rig. I've got the bass side sorted: amps (Berg IP stack) plus the effect board (OC2>Compressor (maybe)>Orbit). Guitar side is a little bit less concrete, but will definitely be a Marshall combo amp (set clean) plus the effect board (whatever that might be - pedal preference seems to shift on a daily-to-weekly basis). Will need to look into string options too. When the instrument is complete I will probably travel up to Moffat to pick it up (provided Alan is OK with that), particularly as it would be somewhat unfair for him to build such an unusual instrument and not see the nutter who ordered it try to play the thing. So if any of you want to come along too (whenever that may be) you are more than welcome to.
Sounds like a good idea dude. Keep me posted on when you might be going up and I'll see if I can tag along. Annoyingly, popping over to ACG HQ isn't as easy from London as it was from Edinburgh The Moffat Bass Bash in 2012 that Owain mentioned will be great though, I'll certainly be there, hopefully with my new Skelf SC 6er Eude
 8. Wow man, that's going to be one cool instrument! Don't think you could've selected a better luthier for the project either. I'll be watching this one very closely as a Charlie Hunter fan, an ACG fan and a bit of a bass/guitar geek Eude
 9.
Perfect! More here....
Very nice dude, a perfect fit! Eude
 10.
Doh!, missed the first anniversary!
Seriously! That's crazy! Have you been on contact about it? Jon can be a bit crappy on email, but if you can get him on the phone it's always good. Cheers, Eude
 11.
I'm not sure.. Mrs. WoT has just rang to tell me it's landed, but I won't be home until later tonight. Fingers crossed!
Cool man, looking forward to hear how you got on. Might treat myself to a WoT Signature Promethean Cover after pay day... Eude
 12.
Flipping heck... The cover has arrived! I only sent them the measurements on Wednesday.. Off to a gig, so more tomorrow.
Did you get the measurements right then?... Eude
 13.
The FB soapbars are voiced along the lines of Jazz type pickup so there is a similarity between the two. The single coils to me have a more aggressive top end on them and a slightly different bottom end.
Thanks for chiming in Alan, SBs it is then Eude
 14.
Yup. Fuller than I expected, not at all reedy or thin which I think many single coils can be, and not that different in truth to the ACG soapbars fitted to Lazarus and Scribble. I don't go for the burpy sound myself so didn't try to get into that territory but I suspect that they'd "do" that sound very well coupled with an ACG preamp. Don't think you'd be disappointed.
Excellent dude, the main thing I want from them is to be aggressive sounding, a little bit like a Jazz bass but hopefully fuller, with more authority and a good gob of mid-range. I'm pairing them with a U-Retro, as I want something a little simpler to use and the option to switch to passive mode if and when it hits the fan, or for certain recording purposes will be very very useful. Eude
 15.
I'll reply to this elsewhere, Eude, and probably after tomorrow night as the Tefano will get it's first "proper" outing in a band situation at full whack. I suspect they're everything you're looking for but you can never really tell til you've heard them sit in a mix, I think.
Any SB based news messer Scoop? Eude
 16.
Mind you, they've added it to their on-line catalogue based on my measurements. I hope I was accurate... Time will tell...
Oooo, pressure's on then I'm it'll be fine dude, I'll probably order myself one soon enough too. Cheers, Eude
 17.
Order placed for a cover from Roqsolid... 40-odd quid. I'm going to use it more for gigging with one of my bands, so it'll be worth it. I'll report back with pics, etc. when the cover arrives.
Nice one dude, looking forward to seeing the results. Are you going to something that just slips over the top allowing access to the handle on the top? Eude
 18.
Oooooo... temptation...
Go on, you know you want to... Good luck with the sale Bob! Eude
 19.
Having a custom cover made for my Promethean Combo, a simple slip over padded cover with access hole to the handle on the top. My combo is being used exclusively at all my gigs at the moment so got to get the little guy a bit of protection. If the cover turns out okay I will post some photos and details of supplier. Nothing but praise for this little amp so far Stu

Cool! I've just asked Roqsolid for a quote for a cover... I'll post here when they get back to me. I used mine at a 'proper' gig for the first time last night - my main rig is set up somewhere else. The band I was playing with isn't loud (the drummer uses a Cajon, drum and a Handsonic), but the punters were chatty and noisy so we had to crank it up a bit more than normal. The Promethean coped brilliantly. Obviously it didn't have the authority of my main rig at that kind of volume, but it wasn't lacking. It surprises me constantly...
I'm really interested to see how you both get on with yer custom covers, have considered doing something similar Eude
 20. Very nice Scoop, this one's coming along loverly Eude
 21.
I'll reply to this elsewhere, Eude, and probably after tomorrow night as the Tefano will get it's first "proper" outing in a band situation at full whack. 22. Also Scoop, you got any feedback on the 2 SB pickups in your Tefano now you've had it for a while? I looking for a big, aggressive, authoritative voice from this bass, reckon the SBs will fit the bill?... Eude
 23. Subscribed Pics of my ACG Fin SC 5 string coming very soon. Lovely collection there mate! Eude
 24.
(Scoop gets a bit Highlander) "There can be only one..." Um, Lazarus was the son of Boetius (sp?) but I dunno if he had a son himself. His sisters were Miriam and Martha so you can use those if you like. Martha's a nice name for a bass. I'm waffling aren't I? Nice specs by the way, Eude. I claim noodling rights at the next Moffat bash.
We can decide on a name once the bass appears, however, "Martha, son of Lazarus" does have a nice ring to it, albeit in a "Boy named Sue" kinda way. You're free to claim noodling rights mate, I've certainly spent a lot of time on your basses Eude
 25. Quick update... I've changed my mind about the shape. It's been no secret how much I love Scoop's Skelf SC, so I decided that I'll go with the same shape. This bass will now officially be known as "Lazarus, Son of Lazarus". So may bass will hopefully look a bit like this >> But a little shorter, wider, with 1 extra string, and with slightly different woods... Cheers, Eude
