Contribution to the tonewood debate - a unique take (Bacci)
eude replied to three's topic in Bass Guitars
Nothing new there I'm afraid, Charlie Hunter has had that pickup and output set up on his guitars for as long as I've been listening to him, possibly the best part of 2 decades! Jeez I'm old! Back on the topic of the bass at hand, I really don't see anything special to it, whatsoever, but some folks are willing to pay lots for custom instruments, that others think is silly, it's just another example of marmite in the bass world... -
That is not helpful

That's is awesome buddy, congratulations!

Ryan Martinie has moved to Fodera from Warwick, his signature tone was always a Warwick Thumb, and yet, his Fodera sounds just the same, with a maple neck, korina body with a maple top. The pickups are in that classic Thumb 5 position however, which like you say, has to be the secret sauce... https://fodera.com/collections/signature-instruments-standard-series/products/ryan-martinie-black-beauty-standard-deposit

I think the very dense body wood of a Thumb also contributes something, although, probably less on the bolt-on. If you were to build a Jazz sized body with similar woods though, it would be a boat anchor!

5 feet 6 here, and although I managed with a Thumb BO 5er back in my late teens, early 20s, I wouldn't want to be playing one now in my 40s! I moved it on, primarily as I wanted to go back to a 6 string, and couldn't afford to keep both, but once I went to a more comfortable bass, I could never go back. The sound was immense, they looks SO cool, but ergonomically, a very bad design compared to a lot of others out there, including other basses in the Warwick catalogue.

I'm moving on one of my ACG 6 string basses. The one in, one out rule applies in my house sadly, so as much as I don't want to see it go, needs must. It's a pretty special bass, 6 strings, singlecut bolt-on design, with a 31.5" scale length. Even with the shorter scale, the whole thing is so well designed and made that the low B is solid, as useable and musical as most 34" and 35" basses in my opinion, but I will attach a couple of vids so you can hear it. Here's the lowdown... 6 string, tuned B to C 31.5" scale Bolt-on construction 24 frets 16.5mm string spacing 54mm nut width STUNNING Highly Figured Black Limba Body 3 piece Wenge Neck, with Asymmetrical profile Pau Ferro Fingerboard ACG RFB pickup, humbucker, handmade by Aaron Armstrong with series/single coil/parallel switching, roughly in the MM Stingray location East Uni-pre 4K preamp with passive tone control and active/passive switching Hipshot A Type Bridge Gotoh Resolite Tuners String with Newtone Nickels, 28 40 60 80 100 125TW More pics here on the ACG site >> https://acguitars.co.uk/project/0307-finn-classic-6-31-5/ Video featuring lockdown hairdoo and beard, and the Low B string in use (recorded using a phone and a little Warwick 1x8 Combo) >> Silly video doing some noodling as part of a duel with a good friend, who is a Banjo player (recorded using a phone and a little Warwick 1x8 Combo) >> The bass is absolutely mint, only issue to declare is the 12th fret, on the high C string has a little buzz, which you can hear in the second clip if you're really listening hard, so it could do with a little fret dress on that fret, but bar that, it's all good. Looking for £1650 and it can come with a Hiscox Hardcase for an extra £50, otherwise it'll be in a TGI Extreme Gigbag. More than happy to courier within the UK, with insurance, at buyer's cost. Please check my feedback >> I'll leave this up for a couple of weeks, then I will move it to The Bass Gallery for a commission sale, but that will mean the price goes up, so if you're keen but can't quite stretch to it immediately, please get in touch, we might be able to work something out. New, this bass would now cost over £2800, and well worth it at that too. No trades thanks, I have other plans... Any questions, you know where I am Cheers, Eude

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
eude replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
It's tricky to make a short scale 5er with a good B in a factory situation where wood selection and tolerances are arbitrary at best. By all accounts, the Ibanez Talman gets close enough, but I wouldn't expect many other big manufacturers to get it right at an affordable price point. For a kick ass short scale 5er, you really need to be looking over, probably way over that £1k price point and talking to luthiers rather than corporations. -
Lovely bass! Congratulations!

I just bought some rather nice medium scale La Bella tapes from Embra, fantastic communication, strings in perfect condition, and super swift delivery. Thank you very much! Eude

Just found a nice demo on YouTube by JoBass, that sounds very very good, even without the silly low price! Where did you get yours from? Here's the link for reference... https://youtu.be/JHuxs_mnAn8?si=m1XRhGB5-J4nxGlJ

What a day! Be really interested to hear your thoughts on the differences between the Classic and the Killer B.
-
Does that mean that a flat board would just be a solid colour?
-
I'm the original owner, that was my first custom bass way back in 2006, and it's a beauty! Shame to see it in a bit of a state, however it's a really solidly made instrument and I'm sure it will spruce up just fine. Bar all that it looks to be in decent condition for a bass that's nearly 20 years old! Best of luck with it all. Eude

These little guys keep catching my eye, the fact that it's all analogue, and can be powered by a 9V battery gives it an edge on a lot of the competition. I sold my SansAmp BDDI V2, which I probably shouldn't have done, and I'm always of a mind to replace it, ideally with something similar, but cheaper, and this seems like the best bet! Be interesting to hear if anyone has any experience of it...
-
They will be bloomin' expensive in the US if they're Chinese made given recent events...

Ooooooffft, very interesting. Would love to see a Killer B in 6 string flavour, those were top of my want/need list back in the day. Pricing is bloody competitive too, I wonder how the build quality will stack up.
