I realise that they are very new to the market but you could have a look at Dave Perry's 3 way EAD cabs Bob. You have the option then of attenuating the mid ranged driver and the tweeter to suit your requirements. They are built to Dave's very high standards and if you were at the Moffat Bass Bash (I think you were) you may know how good his prototype sounded in the back to back comparisons. Yes I'm a fan and Dave's a friend but regardless they are well worth a look. http://www.extendedaudiodesign.co.uk/ Peter
+1,000,000
33" really is the way forward! ive been set on having it since i played a Fodera Garrison Imperial last year, ive never had such an effortless playing experience!
That's exactly the same experience that turned me on to 33"! I was over in Boston in 2003 and was very lucky to be allowed a noodle, the bass was effortless to play, not really my kinda tone, but man it felt great! Eude
sure, if you're interested and dont mind me going OT somewhat its a tentative spec and still subject to change, since it will be a while before i place my order (once ive graduated most likely) 6 string Shuker Uberhorn elite 5 piece maple/wenge thru neck 33" scale ebony/rosewood fingerboard 26 frets (small) Ash body Poplar burl/Chestnut burl top 17.5mm string spacing Brass nut Gotoh 707 ultralite tuners EMG DC pickups Fully adjustable ramps/thru fingerboard Shuker/Fodera/East 3 band preamp Its based on my main bass (the customised Indie 606) with a few detailed alterations (shorter scale, more frets, striking top wood and different preamp) yeah, thats what ive heard people say before i love the look of ebony boards, but ive seen some stunning rosewood boards too so im still not too sure which to go for. cant wait to see your bass come to life!
Lovely sounding spec mate 33"er too, it's the way forward for sure!
OK, you've gotten some beautiful wood put on your basses the bloodwood fingerboard on your 5 and the top on your shuker 6 come to mind the only top wood ive liked more than that is the top wood on that Uberhorn, so il be asking for something similar from Jon when i get around to ordering something special Out of interest, how does Ebony compare to rosewood playing and sound wise?
Thanks dude, makes me think wonder the combo of that bloodwood board and amboyna top from the shuker might have looked like, maybe once I've managed to learn how to save money, however I was thinking more along the lines of a Koa top for the next one, hmmm... So you're thinking of going for a custom? Would be keen to hear the specs As far as Ebony vs Rosewood goes, I don't think there'll be much in it as they're both very very hard woods. Rosewood tends to not get used for fretless as it has a slightly more open grain which means it wears out quicker. If anything, I guess the ebony will have a slightly more pronounced high end, what with the tighter grain and it being ever so slightly harder, maybe a little more aggressive sounding perhaps? All guess work to be honest, as I've never had an ebony fingerboard before, I just went with it this time for a change Eude

I should really add, the choice of woods really isn't "my skill", it's really down to the luthiers who build these basses interpreting the nonsense folks like me come out with. I reckon I'm more lucky than skilled Eude
You've certainly an eye for picking lovely pieces of wood!! Your shuker was my favourite bass that Jon's produced, till the 5 string uberhorn thats on his homepage came along Looking forward to seeing this develop!
Thanks dude, much appreciated I can't wait to see this bass come to life too!
Indeed - I've been an Overwater Nickels man for aaaaages. IMHO I'll most likely return to them as well. A friend has used BB's for ages and having spent some time playing his bass I find the tension to be a little lower on the BB's, which my fingers like. Also the tonal comparison I find is very similar, certainly nothing that a minute tweak on the mid dial doesnt sort out. The big sellin point at the mo, being that I'm on stage with the drum & bass project, is that they look Awesom
Cool, I may well order some up from the states, see how I get on with them Cheers, Eude
They certainly don't. It's being string with Black Beauties before it's shipped and then it's all mine!
I thought you were an Overwater String devotee? Any reason for the change? I was thinking about trying out the Black Beauties too, but was concerned about losing the mid rangy growl you get from some Nickels... Cheers, Eude
Has anyone tried the Mayones basses that Mark @ Bass Direct has in stock? Im widening my scope and basically looking at everything, not fussed which store its from, but would rather it be one where I can go if any problems. The Mayones Jabba Classic is a very pretty bass in dirty sunburst. Some of my recent orders I made have been cancelled so Im back on the Jazz hunt.
I think haimesy on here has one, at least a regular Jabba, might be worth shooting him a PM, he's one of the good guys

Hey Ant, did this bass ever get finished? Really like the spec, would love to see some pics... Eude

Anyone play a guitar amp and a bass amp at the same time?
eude replied to cocco's topic in Amps and Cabs
If I was to do this it would be purely in the pursuit of dirty tone, but without loosing low end thump. I've tried using a distortion pedal through my orange gear but to little avail, the low just went home and took it's ball with it. I'm imagining to get what I'm after I'd probably need a 100w valve amp and a 4x10 to compete with my AD200 and 8x10? Can anyone recommend a guitar rig for bass to bring the dirt? I'd have thought an orange 4x12 would have the right tonal characteristics, a Marshall B cab would probably do too but I wouldn't know where to start with the head? JJ burnels hi watt tone would be great but those old hi watts aren't cheap. Maybe a Marshall JCM or an Orange?
I think Cass Lewis from Skunk Anansie and Timmy C from RATM both run a "bass" bass amp and an "effects" bass amp, giving their dirty tone a lot more welly. Cass was using Eden rigs last time I heard (albeit a while ago) and Tim has bounced between Ashdown and Ampeg for the last few years... Eude -
Anyone play a guitar amp and a bass amp at the same time?
eude replied to cocco's topic in Amps and Cabs
I used to do this a long long time ago. I had a DOD Chorus pedal that had two outputs, I'd run one into my bass amp, think it was a Carlsboro Stinger, and the other into a Laney guitar combo. I used to have a lot of issues with, arguably cheap ass, effects not cutting through well, and being in a 3 piece being able to fill in and get a bit louder during solos was pretty important. I ended up only using my effects on the line going into the guitar amp, leaving a bass signal untouched and it worked real nice These days I'm not all the bothered about using all those effects plus I can't be bothered carrying two amps around Cheers, Eude -
I'd recommend the Ibanez Promethean. It's compact, it sounds great at low (and high) volume, it has an Aux in and headphone out for playing along with mp3's, and if you need to up the ante for a gig you can either add another cab, or take the head out and use it with a larger cab. I'd agree with what's been said above about the Walkabout Scout. They're not great for plunking around in the house.
+1 Incredibly versatile piece of kit at a cracking price! Eude
Is there a specific reason for 33" scale. ? I went from 34" on my other basses to 35" scale on the Overwater and didn't feel any difference to be honest. Dave
Allow me to chime in... I made the shift to 33" basses almost 5 years ago now, having played a 33" Fodera a while back and having a bit of an epiphany. I'm a fairly small bloke and I've always struggled a bit with bass, having played 34" and even 36" basses in the past. Picking up what felt like an incredibly small and compact bass and getting all the tone and feel I would hope for from a regular bass was simply amazing! Basses don't necessarily need to be big or heavy anymore and a decent luthier can make a low B on a shorter scale just as musical and effective as on a longer scale through construction techniques and wood and hardware choices. When I had the opportunity to have my first custom bass built, I made sure to find someone who was happy to build a 33" scale one and I've never looked back. As I mentioned I've played basses all the way up to 36" scale, ranging from £90 to well over £3000, not all of them mine, and on all of my 33" basses the low B has been as good as the best of the bunch. I'm now on my 3rd and have another on the way. The benefits I've noted are as follows • less of stretch in the fretting hand as the frets are marginally closer together • shorter reach for the fretting arm, as everything is shifted in an inch • fuller and sweeter sounding upper register, especially on the higher strings • ever so slightly more supple feel to the strings, not to everyone's taste however going up a gauge will sort that, I currently use regular gauge DRs Now all of these are a real godsend for the "travel sized" bass player, but they're surely of benefit to everyone! Cheers, Eude
Ibanez Promethean. Don't be fooled by its price. A fantastically versatile combo with a detachable head.
+1 Amazing little bit of kit. Probably to most versatile, reliable and affordable combo doing the rounds at the moment. The removable amp head keeps up with most of the current crop of 500W class D amp heads out there too. I won't be without mine for the foreseeable! Eude

I'd personally go for a Warwick, G&Ls are very very nice, as are Ibanez basses, however there's something a little bit magic about a German made Warwick. Quite a few nice Warwicks on here at the moment... Nice Infinity SN - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=147374 A very nice Dolphin SN - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=147151 Both the above are now discontinued and don't crop up very often. A fairly rare Dolphin II - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=133907 A Streamer LX - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=146817 and an loverly Thumb BO - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=145599 which I'd be all over if I had the money. Some Warwick necks can be a bit beefy, but I've found all the 4 string necks I've tried to be just fine and I have fairly small hands and short fingers too. The chunkiness only tends to become an issue when you go up to 5 or 6 strings. Good luck mate Eude
