1. This is basically a "what would you do" question but needs quite a bit of explaining. Here's my post from Daily Annoyances thread which does so : Booked for a multi-band gig type thing. Used this 'promoter' before and had no issues. This time however has been quite different. Picked up the tickets for it last week and messaged one of the people working there asking if backline is provided as we were under the impression that it was but weren't 100% sure. Waited 3 days to get a reply that was less than helpful but it basically said "full backline minus breakables provide but can you bring your own guitar and bass amps?". Replied saying no we couldn't but will cabs/drum kit and P.A be provided? to which I still haven't had a reply. So I phoned the events manager today who said backline is to be provided by the bands. None of my band drive so taking gear from one place to another isn't easy (especially if it's cabinets/the guitar amps). This wouldn't be an issue if any of us drove and had our own gear that was to a standard of being able to be gigged (I don't even have a cab as there's no point when I can't transport it from home to gig!). I'm mostly annoyed at the lack of professionalism by the promoter as the other bands that are on that night were also under the assumption that backline would be provided (one band were even told not to bring any gear!). No backline being provided for established bands is understandable as they will often be in a position to afford and transport equipment but when it's a gig that's being put on for local/small/unsigned type bands it's almost a given that these bands can't always afford full gigging equipment. Okay now you've read that the promoter finally replied today simply saying "I'll get another band to supply equipment." But quite frankly I don't really feel comfortable using other bands gear for the same fact I don't feel comfortable other bands using my gear. I certainly don't want to have to allow other bands to use my amp head. Even excluding the fact I don't want to risk other people breaking it, I don't even know if I'll be able to stay in the venue till the other bands are even finished due to bus/train times! Ideally I don't want to cancel the gig as I think we have quite a few people coming but I don't really feel comfortable with the way it's been conducted. What would you do in my situation?
2. A big body (ooer) always puts me off. So jazz basses are almost completely out of the question for me. Anything with less than 24 frets I always find to look a little odd and I don't like the feel of any bass without 24+ frets. Something about the extra space between fretboard and bridge I can't stand. Don't get me started on sunburst basses.
3.
A pair of these...what? ;-)
Ah bollocks! I did of course forget to add the link. A pair of these is what I meant http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/guitar_care_detail.asp?stock=13091314353412
4. I have a pair of these. At first I felt like I couldn't get a proper fit/they didn't do much in the way of noise reduction but I actually find them super comfy and I never have ringing in my ears after a rehearsal so they're doing the job for me. Fairly discreet too.
5. Typical! Theres always next time it is a good venue though. Although we may be a little out of place at this gig in comparison to the other bands (bit that's been the case every gig so far).
6. Bought a pedal from Tony. Arrived safe and sound a few days after payment. Can't complain and would deal with again
7. My band are playing The Record Factory in Glasgow on the 14th with a few other bands. Figured I may as well put a post on here incase anybody fancies it. They do good burgers if I remember correctly This is the only recording we have at the moment but it's much the same but with varying levels of weird (That's our most 'normal' song if I'm honest!) - https://soundcloud.com/goon-and-the-kings/dark-side There's also an event page on Farcebook - https://www.facebook.com/events/882526931836239/ Cheers!
8. Will be giving this some attention tomorrow. I would tonight but I fear I would stay up all night!
9. I rarely play anything in music shops but on the odd occasion that I do this always seems to happen. It's not even that my ability goes away but I just seem to forget all the things I know how to play...even my own bands music...music that I wrote!!
10. I played a (I believe) 59' P-bass once and quite honestly I would rate it as the worst bass I've ever played in every possible way BUT to some people the things that they love in a bass are the things I hate. Personally don't see the appeal and for the price mentioned in the original post I'd be going for 4/5 ACG's! "Horses for courses" and all that.
11. I want to hear good music. If a bass solo sounds good then by all means! I don't care at all what instruments are used to make nice sounds. I care about the nice sounds.
12. Sold a pedal to Josh and was super patient with me as I ballsed up and left the pedal in the studio for the weekend! Super quick payment and happily deal with Josh again ! Cheers
13. I'd probably go for a Warwick Corvette Standard. The PJ setup doesn't appeal to me as I hate the sound from any P-pickup ive ever heard/played. When I briefly owned one of the Corvette basses I found it was super easy to dial in a sound to work with any genre. It had just the right amount of growl that it could be eq'd/played so it wasn't there if required but cut through excellently m Heavyweight bass though.
14. Very doubtful. I've certainly never heard of the bigger companies giving out loaner basses. Your best bet is to go to shops like Bass Direct/Bass Gear that will have basses like that in stock.
15. I'd have a look at Dingwalls or an ACG Über spec. The ACG is the most versatile bass I have owned. Admittedly the filter preamp isn't for everybody as there is quite a steep learning curve that comes with it but when you get to grips with it the control you have is fantastic.
16. It sounded great if I'm honest. Very clear sounding without being too sterile, plenty of oomf and the boost low/high switches boost just the right amount for passages in songs where a little bit of a kick is required. The sound guy was impressed with it as well, saying how good the DI from it was. At the moment I feel like I picked the ideal amp for my needs if I'm honest. I'll see how I feel with it over the next month or so...after the honeymoon period has worn off.
17. First time using my Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 in a gig situation. Sounded great! The sound guy absolutely loved it as well. Played a venue we play quite regularly and the in house sound guy is superb (genuinely one of the best I've ever encountered) so it's great fun to play there even if the crowd wasn't upto much. To be honest though until we can afford to get recordings done we can't really complain about naff crowds.
18.
Need a bit more than that Cameron. Have you got yourself some new gear ? Dave
This was originally a "I need a cable for soon" post but I got it sorted . First gig with the Genz Benz though so it is new gear related I suppose!
19. Sorted.
20. I generally drink about a litre of water per rehearsal (and usually a coffee or two on top of that). I generally drink a lot of water anyway but still feel like I'm always dehydrated. At gigs I generally (dependant on how early we arrive for load in/soundcheck) have maybe 1 pint and then about 2 pints of water and generally take a beer up with me for when I'm playing. Suppose you can't really do that in a wedding band type scenario though.
21.
I'd say you are only as good as the weakest member
I'd agree with this. When people listen to your music they listen to it as a whole. If one part sounds bad then it all sounds bad.
22. Subscribing to this as I've just decided to get one of these to replace my delay (as I only use it in 1 song and a multi-effects may be of more use). The UI looks nothing short of bloody confusing if I'm honest.
23. I definitely prefer the streamer body to the jazz shape body. I've only ever found a jazz bass to be uncomfortable to play standing or sitting. The streamer I owned however sat really nicely when on a strap...much better than the corvette or thumb bass did. if you're buying second hand I say buy it and worst case scenario is that you don't like it and sell it on for little/no loss.
24.
Thanks, guys - Gotoh are certainly looking like a good and cheaper alternative to Hipshot.
I've only had Gotoh tuners on one bass before (my current one) and to be honest I prefer them to Hipshot ultralites (not that there Is anything wrong with them!)They seem smoother and it makes getting the Low B string spot on considerably easier. I believe they weigh about the same as well.
