1. If you are starting out I think an 828 may be more than you would need. Google somewhere like Digital Village and have a look at their Firewire audio interfaces. For now you can get by on a 4 input, 10 output interface- there are plenty to choose from. They will have 2 mic/line in, usually 2 digital inputs, headphone outputs and several other outs for you to assign to monitors etc. I used an M Audio 410 for about 3 years and was fine for recording 1 or 2 tracks simultaneously. Once you become familiar with what's available and you want to save more have a look on eBay or Basschat. You should be able to pick something up new for around £200 and even less s/h.
2. This is about as normal as he gets- probably demonstrates his sense of humour too
3.
It's really quite difficult to get those sounds out of a bass - because it wasn't designed to do that job. Thus necessitating the entirely praiseworthy years of dedication and the addition of sundry bits of kit to the basic instrument. I genuinely applaud their hard work and efforts but for me - judged on that piece alone - it just doesn't seem much return for the investment - in my opinion. I may be wrong. Who cares? It's just the Internet.
A bit like someone turning water into wine when it would easier but less impressive to just buy a bottle of wine. I enjoyed both clips by the way- the latter one wasn't pushing the envelope in any way which I think Captain Manring deserves some credit for. If a little of what he does filters through in some way, then music and bass playing benefits and evolves a little. If it wasn't for the Jacos and Jamersons then we wouldn't have the Pinos etc. Horses for courses etc Like I said in a previous post- it's all music so it's all good IMO
4. Sold my Eden 2x12 to Lee. Easy to do business with- great communication and a good guy etc. Good luck with the new arrival (and I'm not talking about the Eden)
5. I watched all of the vid before reading the posts- I have to say I find a lot of his stuff pretty stunning. I don't go out of my way to listen to his stuff but thanks for the link This piece can't really be compared to bass playing and risks being slated if judged from a meat n spuds bassist's point of view- listening to it without the visuals reminded me of a Koto or Shamisen piece. Very chilling. IMO when he plays like this he isn't a bassist- he's a musician/composer expressing himself through a (modified relative of a) bass guitar. I can't get my head around how you start composing a piece like this- I find alternative tunings a head mash and to mix this with hipshot-style detuners (I guess thats what he's using) If I had a hat on, I'd take it off to him. He's someone who clearly got bored of playing Mustang Sally early on. The bassist's world would be a poorer world without him and people like him- but the same could be said of players who haven't got bored of playing Mustang Sally. Music- you gotta love it and the people who create it!!
6. I know we've gone OT but I think Cowell spotted that this was going to be another 'Michelle McManus year' pretty early after 2 years of genuinely talented winners (may not be everyone's taste but LL and AB are great vocalists) and is making the best of a bad job in creating another Chico in the shape of the twins (at least Chico has some charisma) This year were a pretty bad bunch Olly M- Will Young tribute Jamie Afro dude- you'd love him fronting your pub/club band Geordie kid- John Barrowman in the making. UK tour of Joseph inside 18 months. Stacey S- new Catherine Tate character Danyl- Joe Longthorne doing Shirley Bassey Lloyd- bless him re monitoring, hats off to the poor beggars. There is so little live singing on TV these days from pop acts so they don't stand a chance. Lucie has a lovely voice but even she sounded a little squawky when she belted the other night. Damned if you do, damned if you don't- Robbie gets slammed for singing out of tune (no credit for singing live tho) and other acts gets slammed for miming.
7. I have to agree with the OP. Twice I have had pre problems with the bass in my avatar- loose wires etc. Both times I bypassed the pre and compensated with some tone shaping and gain altering on my amp- I really enjoyed the tone. The thought process is, I guess- I paid for it so I must use it. Daft really. I'm not far away from changing my approach depending on the style of music. The pre, as I use it, makes the bass sound huge- almost 'synth bass'-like in the lower regions. If I fancy a more organic sound I may start to bypass the pre more.
8.
I actually find that the biggest issue with reading music is acquiring the concentration and focus required to remember that this what you are doing and not letting your mind wander.
I find this applies when reading a book also- having to re-read paragraphs and sometimes pages when the mind wanders! It's not exclusive to reading notation. Your point about keys sigs is a good one although in popular music today, the modulation is used so much that the last 16 of a song is always a bit "wa-haay!!" and you have the battle between ears and eyes that you also mention. With Sibelius being used more often, where a handwritten part used to offer a bit more leniancy, Cb and Fb are becoming less of a surprise on a sight read. Just please let it be on a simple pop bassline!
9. Sounds like you've been given "Basslines" by Joe Hubbard? The Simandl books suggested by Bilbo are great. Reading is about conquering 2 main elements- pitched notation, and rhythm. More often than not it's the rhythmic element that can undo many a player. This would be a great £6 invested and will keep you going forever http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-Reading-Tex...1890&sr=8-1 Another added twist on bass and guitar is where you play the notes, as there will nearly always be more than one option.
10. Who would have thought you could get four such talented brothers? Seriously though- its tricky to get 4 individuals in a band to play to that standard without there being a weakness, let alone one guy. Always loved the middle section at 2.48- just when you thought you'd nailed the head (which I never did) this fella comes along..

12. I used to have a bolt-on Smith 5-er that I bought from the Bass Centre in its Wapping days ('98/9 ish) Great bass but fell out with it as quick as I got into it. Sold it for snip too The US market for Smith must be huge compared to over here as it seems to be one of THE gospel basses to have along with MTD.
13. My 2p would be Hemispheres and Moving Pictures but then I'm just showing me age there. Exit Stage Left for a cross section of their earlier stuff.
14.
Cheers Michael. Not sure ill get the tone i was hoping for but im getting a great tone so thats good enough... Now, phase two has started. Im going to put a Nordy NJ5FS in the bridge position in the next couple of weeks to try and get rid of the RF noise the bridge pup is now picking up, and then its all finished and will probably be in the for sale section before Christmas LOL.
Brilliant. Just read this entire thread. This post summed it up perfectly! Why do we do it to ourselves?? Good luck with it all.
15. Bummer. I remember seeing a video of John Patitucci playing a bass held in a stand so he could switch from a 6 to a 4 string in seconds- not sure where these stands are and how practical they are but would that be an option? Found it- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmjZToHAIhE...feature=related ..at around 0.33. You should buy the shirt too Good luck and I hope you get something sorted.
16.
Why do popular tunes always get slagged off?
+1
17.
I remember seeing him at the Manchester University Students Union years ago and stood about 20 feet away from him. When the band struck up the first track and Marcus' bass kicked in it just blew me away. One of those truly "lump in my throat" emotional times I've had with music.
Same for me when I saw him first at the Barbican- the sound wasn't so good but I got tears in my eyer when he came on the stage and then when he left. Much better seeing him at the Jazz Cafe- talk about an in-your-face sound!!
18.
Buy a Mac. Garageband come free with it, and is a great way to get started with home recording. If, as you develop, you find it becomes too limiting then Logic is a sensible upgrade and a complete steal at around £300.
Or Logic Express which is even cheaper- especially from eBay (£75 ish?) Garage Band is the sensible starting point though. Keeps it simple- nothing like technical problems to stifle any creative flow!! Either way, have fun!

20.
If only it were a UL-610!! You wouldn't believe how difficult it has been to get one recently!! Epifani's own ones are so flippin expensive! - So I found a thread on BC about company 'A' - but they ended up mucking there customers around.. and weren't very helpful to me either.. so I emailed company 'B' a couple of days ago.. and they don't seem to be wanting to reply either. (I emailed as I had to send in the dimensions of the cab as suggested on their site). So I'm on the look out for another company. If it takes any longer I would have sold the cab and moved on to my next GAS attack!!!!
Try Googling Roqsolid. Unless they are company 'A' or 'B'! I've used them for 3 covers, each custom made, and they did the business. Not cheap but good, strong padded covers.
21.
Thats very true... I depped a lot on this show when it first toured then went into the West End about 10 years ago. Shane Ritchie was the main turn IIRC. Good fun show to play, i think it was all live at that time, just a few clix tracks with extra instruments etc. The guy i depped for used a Warcking thumb, And i used a Sadowsky nyc 5 stg jazz....Green! I sold it to a guy in Grantham. I have often wondered if anyone here on Basschat now owns it? Garry
Wasn't it in The Bass Gallery a year or 2 back? Same description. I always thought it was Steve Pearce's old bass. Either way it was one of the nicest jazzes I've played- it just felt well bedded in.
22. I really hope things turn around for you soon- I'm not familiar with the fretless but I know the copper jazz as your bass. The best of luck with everything.
23. Happy days for them no doubt. Hiram Bullock seemed to have such a huge personality
