1.
Phil Collins = Great drummer.
Unmistakably him. Are there 2 drummers? I seem to remember Mark.. *pauses to google surname*.. Brzezicki from Big Country doing stuff like this- their styles are similar with overfills and big kit sounds etc
 2.
This is the live version of Sanborn's 'Run For Cover'. Marcus's fingerstyle intro and the slap solo in the middle are an amazing example of how the perfect solo should build. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J85oQSX-d6s BTW, the sound is very low.
+ the 1. Was thinking of this one as a memorable solo from my youth. For me it has to be Havona everytime for jaw dropping everythings (light and shade, fluidity, composition etc), with the Willie Weeks solo being equally jaw dropping but in a totally different way. EDIT- that Miller intro and solo aren't as good as the ones that made it onto the Straight From The Heart live album. I guess it was the same series of sessions/gigs. RIP Hiram Bullock- class.
 3. Drop D is pretty quick and simple- you can almost do it by eye. I had it down to a fine art when I played 4 string. Think it was a quarter or half turn.
 4.
Kiss made me want to be in a band, but I think it was Paul Gardiner of Tubeway Army that made me want to be a bassist.
For me it was being about 13, listening to ALIVE II whilst staring at the most incredible gate-fold sleeve. The bass feature before God of Thunder, coupled with Gene Simmons' image, scorched an indelible impression on me. I needed to play that instrument.
 5. Not what you would expect but Luther Vandross' death upset me. I've always found him to be such a sincere vocalist.
 6.
e.g., the rack mount tuner that doesn't hear bass frequencies at all
Yeah. I've got that one too. No quick tuning in a few beats rest- notes don't register quick enough unlike the Korg it's pretending to be which I have in my other case. Waste of money.
 7.
Just a quick point of order, bass does not get louder further away from the amp. It actually gets quieter like every other sound.
I think the point was that a few feet away from your cab the bass will be clearer than if you are standing over the cab. Am I right in thinking that setting up in the corner of a pub, the bass is always going to sound pretty hideous?
 8. http://www.cafepress.com/+bass_clef_dark_tshirt,45359661 Had this bought for me at Christmas- only turned up today and I tried it on. Its a large but is too big for me- I usually take a large but his is too big for me. Quite long in the body and too big for a 42" chest. Possibly an XL in the real world £10 posted
 9. Glad the misunderstandings all got sorted- this forum has come a long way re sorting it's sh*t out internally. Nice one. A little OT but just wanted to say FWIW I'm not a fan of virtuoso bashing for the sake of it- I'm in awe of the talents of Janek and Hadrien despite me not loving EVERYTHING they do. The fact is that both of them could probably impress a broader range of people with a Fender in their hands- no question they could groove incredibly- and they prob do on many a gig we don't know about. The funny thing is this style of playing is something that our own Urb is aiming for- whenever Mike posts a video of himself trying out these kind of advanced techniques he gets supported and praised, or criticised constructively (if people aren't fans they simply don't post I presume) because he is one of us. It would be cool if we could extend that kind of respect to guys who are the bigger names but, nevertheless, as they have posted on here and play the bass guitar are one of us also. Nothing wrong with having an opinion and personal tastes though. I wish I could express my self solely through my instrument the way these guys can. Nice bass
 10.
Thanks mate I don't want to go too OT or into much detail but in short it was a painful breakup of a 3 1/2 year relationship. That's enough said about that.
I feel for you. Great website- good fun to be had.
 11. There are people who are theory-led, playing music which almost bypasses their ear. "I can play this scale over these changes and then this shape over that bit" (I have played with these guys), and there are those who have no, or little knowledge, of theory whose ears and feel are incredible (also encountered these guys) The realistic ideal situation is somewhere between the two (the absolute ideal is having both traits down 100%) Its like the reader vs non-reader debate. "I can't read but I can pick up stuff really quickly and I'm a great busker." Well how about a great busker who can pick up stuff easily but who can read great too? It's all gravy.
 12.
this clip should probably be in the funk and groove thread too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL6DD-oeveg
Yikes. Not what I was expecting. Talented bar steward.
 13.
Astute observation Sir! I can only assume that having spent a good few grand on an Alleva he wanted to get the use out of it
I think I saw him on TV with Will Young the other day- would explain the EUB too. A bit of "Leave Right Now" maybe?
 14. Music history- any live footage from that era, Motown or not, is fascinating. So much has changed since then, not all of it for the better.
 15. I have 4 basses- poss only my 80s Squier Jazz is worth less than my car but then I do drive a T reg Mondeo with 120k on the clock. Never let me down yet though. (Candidate for 1st post on "Famous Last Words" thread)
 16.
Small world... I recently sold Neil a pre-CBS Precision. played for 10 years straight? You're not straight anymore then?
Nah, the bass weighed a ton! Neil's a lucky man too- always liked his playing.
 17.
My first drum kit, bass guitar and amp came from Grott Guitars. All of it s**te.
Evening Stu
 18.
Err...that's me. Still active in the workshop department. Cheers.
Howard! You made a black 5er for me about 20 yrs ago- I was just leaving the CAT to go on a summer season in Cornwall (I had a fretless off you a few years later) Your 5 prototype had been brought in to college poss by Neil Harland- played that bass for 10yrs straight. The Bart pre is now in an 80s Squier that I bought '87/88 too. The original neck is on my wall. Glad to see you're still tweaking.
 19. I was in Newcastle from 86-90 at the CAT. Happy days. Windows was a great CD shop but you'd always have a mooch downstairs too- I forget the name of the guitar shop that was the place for me. If I remember rightly it was owned by the guys that later owned Soundslive. I bought a guitar tuner from there that is still going. My first 5 string was built by Howard Satterley- he had just started making them in about late 1989. Still got the neck as a memento.
 20. Gotta love Abe Laboriel Jr tho- one of my favourite drummers. There's the 1, there's the 3 with loads of attitude and just the right amount of flair. Get in! Would hate to be one of his cymbals.
 21. This thread is excellent for funk lovers. Some of this stuff is new to me- just add Spotify and mix
 22. Nice snare ghosting- cheers Mike! This is so laid back it's like you're watching it last week Another fave- a great groove player and all round cool guy.
