1. Nice playing- very clean. I like your legato passages too. I didn't have a prob hearing the timing but I know where The Funk was coming from in that I am the same when listening to unaccompanied jazz improv- if I can't hear the changes it doesn't mean as much. I remember the first time I heard the changes to Donna Lee- it was like "Aaah, now I get it" Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah- nice one!

    Sadowskys

I find the Sadowsky a simple, no fuss pre. I had a J-retro dlx before which had too many options for me- boost, cut, bright, mid etc. A very comprehensive piece of kit but a bit too involved when paired with what is essentially a simple bass. I used to have a 5 string jazz with an old Bart pre which was v similar to the Sad- bass and treble boost only. I've never ever cut bass or treble on any bass I've had tbh The VTC if turned down will give you a duller sound. Any other tweaking gets done on my amp. I bought mine before the £ went through the floor against the $ so it was worth a punt
  3. I've mentioned it several times over the past few years- I love the bassline to Kylie's Spinning Around. Never found out exactly who it is- great hooky fill at the top and a great groove throughout. Bernard Edwards influenced- it's poss Paul Turner or Winston Blissett?
  4.
Very hard to resist... if it would be in Belgium I would have gone for it. Stunning sound from a great bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzMoUFTHuYE
6.00- "What happens now?" Brilliant! Nice clip- some great moments. The pure concentration on Berlin's face playing the slap line. Nice to see I have something in common with him. Thought the drummer was going to be a weak link- how wrong was I? Great fill at 3.33. Hello!!
  5.
I quite like that - And I don't even listen to any current music usually, miserable old git that I am!
+1 It ain't about the chord structure it's about the mel-o-dee.

  7. For me, on the whole, yes. I can still be creative but I'd have to say I feel stagnation in certain areas of my playing. In another life maybe I could spend downtime working on things like that but in this life I choose not to.
  8.
One of these days somebody will write something about cabs for the wiki. Perhaps chardbass could do it.
It ain't me that's being the smart-arse! My knowledge of such matters is inferior to others' on this forum- I can spot a bully when I see one though.
  9.
like a lot of us I expect Alex is getting fed up with explaining the same things over and over again - often to the same people. Two things destroy drivers: 1. Over-heating the voice coil so it melts (actually if will expand and sieze up before it gets that far) 2. Making the cone move in and out further than it is designed to - this will tear the suspension round the edge of the cone or make the voice coil come completely out of the magnet assembly (or both if you try really hard) Overheating the voice coil is the thermal limit and popping the cone is the excursion limit.
Just found your link to my post re Alex's comments on another thread! You really are a bit of a tell-tale aren't you? If you are getting so fed-up then don't post anymore- you seem intent on antagonising with your posts. Surely it's up to us, the more experienced players, to be understanding and patient with people even if the same question is being asked. If it's the same people asking the same questions then ignore it- it's not your problem. We learn and we pass it on, but surely we never brag about our knowledge and make people feel inferior for not knowing- people become afraid of asking after a while.
  10.
Just re-reading my post and can't see what's so complicated about it! Could you clarify what you don't understand? Power handling specs are about as useful on bass cabs as are top speed ones on sportcars if you live in London - you will never be able to sustain enough power into the cab to overheat the speakers, just as you will never find a long enough bit of road in the city to reach anywhere near top speed. What matters is how well your speakers will handle excursion (hopefully you've noticed that speakers move backwards and forward to create sound),
You need to admit that phrases such as "thermally limited power handling" and "excursion limited power handling" aren't used in everyday musician-spiel before coming over as a shade patronising Let's share knowledge and explain it if necessary.
  11.
I sat down and worked out Heart's Desire by Don Blackman a couple of days ago. My ear's not great so I had to use Audacity. 7 notes in the first second made it very difficult to loop with iTunes. Once I slowed it down on Audacity I realised it wasn't actually that complicated.
Thanks for un-earthing that for me. Soon to be ordered from Amazon.
  12. Dammit! These links cost me hours of my life as I delve further into the site watching random bass videos. I've just been on a right tour of bassness.
  13. Bugger off to www.watchchat.co.uk the lot of you!
  14. If I get the gig, what's the dress code and will there be food?
  15.
are they doing 20% off online deals? I can't seem to find a 'Reverb' online store or anything?
They relaunch in about 3 weeks.
  16. Make sure you have it with you when you're next down here Ian. Would love to have a butcher's up close.
  17.
During a chat with Paul Turner (yes The Paul Turner) it turns out that he got his first big break playing with Take That in the 90's because the management saw him playing with a function band at an event and offered him the gig. Not a bad move, after all where is Paul now - well I guess you know the answer to that........ Mark
I always thought the bassist with the 90s Take That was a left-hander.
  18. I can't be choosy about what I play- its my main source of income. I've got bills to pay, a car to run and I want a holiday just like the next man. I have to play some of the biggest dross known to man and have done for 20 years- the point is, I have always played my bass with conviction and with the music in mind. I've never been a 2-handed tapper or mega slapper but with the right mix and drummer I can shake walls and make girls smile
  19.
Bottom line is, speaking frankly, why have a covers band at all, why not book a disco and play the records? That's what most people do now, isn't it?
I don't mean to flame but that is the most idiotic thing I have ever seen on a musician's forum written by a muso.
  20.
And if, at the end of the night, you play "Lady in Red" and there's couples melting into each other everywhere you look, you've helped make that happen. Whatever they are feeling is, in that moment at least, real. And as every note you play intertwines with what they are feeling, you become part of that moment too.
Amen to that. However I would say that as I make all my money from playing covers, teaching covers, transcribing covers, doing arrangements of covers, doing click tracks of covers and backing tracks of covers. There was a day when I was in a rock band doing all originals, and before that at music college playing jazz (some originals) and being fortunate enough to have Jim Mullen work with the group I was in for several days and gig with us for a couple of sets. If I had only pursued those avenues I fear I may not have worked as much as I do now regardless of integrity. I would love to be able to go back to those college days and I even though I am a much better player and musician now, my creativity is much more stale now. I made a decision years ago to make my living from playing music as I love creating, and re-creating, music. The path I have taken in my personal life has led me to the security of contracted seasons etc- for me it's about the quality of musicians I play with. I have, for the most part, played with very talented musicians over the past 18 years who would be quite capable of playing at a higher level if the opportunity arose. I am a jobbing musician
  21.
Hey guys, does anyone have or have you experienced the Sadowsky outboard preamp/di pedal? I'm ordering a new American Standard Precision soon & was thinking of the Sadowsky outboard pre instead of messing with the bass adding preamps, etc.
I had one for a while- it gives plenty of boost but funnily enough didn't make me sound like Marcus Miller. I can't vouch that it gave me that "Sadowsky sound" either as I had nothing to compare it to. I believe Aguilar do a new outboard pre too which looks worthy of attention http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_preamps_tonehammer.htm
  22. Had a hell of a day yesterday- we were tech-ing a 2hr show which went up last night. I was playing between 10.30am and 11.30pm- a total of 7hrs playing including the last set we did. Got up to teach this morning and my shoulders are killing me and my right middle finger is aware of a severe workout. Just the one 45min show tonight though.
