The Lakland 94/02 is a great utility bass. If I was a bigger name I would want the 3 vintage basses in the clip on hand for their classic tone. As it is, all I want is some flexibility from my main instrument so the LH3 55-94 is a great bass for that. It's a Rory Bremner/Alistair McGowen bass- you now who/what it's mimicking but when played side by side you can spot the difference and express a preference. The LH3 gets the bass nearer the Stingray tone than the Bart would allow. I preferred certain traits of the Barts but others of the LH3. I sold the Bart pre so there's no going back now! The video is a great example of how flexible the bass is. A P always sounds like a P, a Jazz has 3 sounds with the neck only p/up getting in the P bass ballpark, and a Stingray always has that Stingray bite no matter what config you use. So, as the clip mentions- 3 ball park classic tones but what it doesn't mention is the bass has a sound of it's own when all pickups are blended (on the video playout) I always get compliments on my full sound- it's a great bass for someone who plays different styles of music but doesn't have 4 basses.

For a while it's been the afro-american gospel-influenced musicians who have been nailing it for me. Some do it better than others and even the best can overplay. (Andrew Gouche got slated a while back for overplaying as MD on an awards show) Usually it is the drummer who does the OTT fills across the bar etc- I personally love it but this bass performance wasn't the best although I know what he was aiming for.

God- I've just watched it again and I can't sit still watching him. Awesome. I'm having that figure from 2:55 as well!

I watch this clip almost every other day- the guy is grooving like a monster. It seems this Chicago church have some great musos playing there. I think this is the ending of a piece called Joy to the World? There is another clip somewhere with another guy playing the same song and he interprets it differently. This is like a cross between Bootsy playing Sex Machine and Anthony Jackson. Awesome groove!

My God, when I was about 14 I used to gaze at that gatefold for hours taking in everything. Listening to that album with it's (slightly over the top) crowd mics blaring, listening to a band at the top of it's game and staring at that image absolutely brain washed me. One of the best in-concert shots ever. Captured 70's USA arena rock perfectly. It was the bass feedback before God of Thunder and Simmons' make up that made me want to play bass. Obviously very impressionable back then!

Good eBay tip off. I've just ordered some Hi Beams. Has anyone noticed much of a difference between Hi Beams and Fat Beams? I initially went with the Marcus Miller-endorsed factor but actually seem to prefer the Hi Beams.

He's been one of my subscriptions for a while now- he's churning out a lot of stuff these days. Comes across as a pretty cool guy.
