what exactly does that mean?
I think I will leave that open to interpretation

This isn't quite the same as the above stories... But after playing a gig to a few thousand people all screaming and going nuts, followed by being asked by some lovely ladies if we can have some photos playing with them... I of course sit in the car home feeling like some kind of superstar Until I get home, walk through the door, only to be told that I'm late, and that there's a pile of washing up to be done! Back to earth with a bang
Is this still going on? Since it is a couple more points.... Firstly every poster needs to say whether they are talking about covers bands or originals bands since they are two entirely different markets with different long and short term aims. Secondly I find the idea that live bands are basically interchangeable completely laughable. Unless you are the most generic of average covers bands you must have something the differentiates you from other bands - songs performance etc. My band plays original music and most of the time we get paid for it. I'm not worried about bands playing for free taking gigs away from us because they are not Dick Venom & The Terrortones and therefore are not a substitute.
What if it was a tribute band called Rick Renholm & The Telephones? And what if they played for free?
-
In the originals bands I've been in, generally we get paid anywhere from zero upwards, usually a measly £30 for the whole band (is this normal?) only ever get more if we get a cut of the door takings, or organise our own event. With the cover band, we did our first gig for free, our second for £50... And now we usually ask for a minimum of £200 (whether we get that or not varies, but our highest fee so far has been £245). We did do a charity event for free this year though, but they fed us In my opinion, with cover bands, you should always get paid. You're usually playing songs that the punters know, like, will dance to, and will most likely buy more drinks (especially if you have a frontman who tells everyone to get pissed and headbang with them ). So they WILL be making money from you. So if you don't get paid you're usually being ripped off. With original band you have to be pretty well established before you will be paid. I don't think this is fair as most original bands work harder but that's just the way it is

To Lick or not to Lick?, that is the question!
chrismuzz replied to Lord Sausage's topic in General Discussion
I just improvise, but there are a few self styled patterns/licks that I tend to throw out semi-regularly -
Vertically stacking two 2x10s is also a good option! Ive only tried it with Markbass (amazing, highly recommended) and Ashdown MAG ones (pretty underwhelmed with the low end response on those) so you'll have to test out different ones yourself if possible.

I'm used to playing a 10+lb 6 stringer so I don't see one of these becoming a problem Is it true that painted body ones are lighter than the natural finish ones?

Ibanez launches new Promethean model P3110 (300W)
chrismuzz replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Amps and Cabs
They removed the port, and simplified the EQ... Is this a cheaper model or something? Also design wise they seem to be copying TC Electronics a bit now. -
I could do with Max doing a micro comp (not sure when the much discussed prototype might go into production)
I thought my compressor GAS was subdued when I found the Aguilar TLC... But a teeny weeny SFX one I could tuck away in the corner of my board would definitely pique my interest!!

I'm not much of a pick player either, but try resting your hand on the bridge instead if you can Failing that you could do what some lead guitarists to and rest your middle finger on the body about an inch to the right of the G string. hope it helps!

Our Helical Mind - New video, new record, new tour!
chrismuzz replied to pantherairsoft's topic in Recording
Great video Shep! A real treat for all the gear junkies And I really enjoyed the song too! -
They're rare, but look for a Markbass CL104 they're gorgeous! Sealed cabinet too (no ports) if that's your thing
...for the vast majority of players they are about the extreme lows and highs (then again, there are lots of 5 string players who are all about the lowest notes too).
I've always avoided using the B string too much... It's so much more effective when used sparingly!
-
I foresee a quest for a new 6 stringer in the not too distant future Very nice playing! It's cool how different basses bring out different sides of people
-
Any highs will come from the horn itself, but depending on your bass, amp, settings, and how old your strings are you may or may not notice a difference. My set up means that I get a very bright sound and even I don't notice THAT much of a difference unless I play percussively or using harmonics. I have my dial turned to about 2 o clock because it takes of a tiny bit of the harhness.
Don't say things like that! Next gig (if there's one) I'll try some subby dub sounds at loud volume & Ppppppppphh! Bvvvvv Bvvv Bvvv Bvvvvvvpppp.
I tried that with my 500w F1 head through an 8 ohm 4x10... I couldn't turn up more than halfway before the stage vibrated so much that my feet tickled and lost my balance!
"I'm actually kinda a big deal".
My apartment smells of rich mahogany Had some guy come up to me once and say something like "You've got a great Markbass amp there mate, why are you playing a Peavey through it?" My response was, "Because it sounds like this" and battered the hell out of the E string. "Oh right"...
When I was researching what to buy, I recall that the B&C drivers have a longer excursion than the majority of other drivers (wait a min, didn't I post something similar about 6 months ago?). So that might part explain them being so loud?
Watching the speakers in my Markbass cab jump all over the place confirms that they have CRAZY excursion! I don't have a clue whether it makes them louder, but it's reassuring to know that they're able to move that much more as they're so much less likely to get damaged... Never heard of one blowing!

For studio work, I don't have a problem with anybody using auto-tune to correct moments that are off key by a fraction. IMO it's no different than using compression to even out levels... What I DO have a problem with is all of these R&B 'artists' who will talk into a microphone, and let technology do all the work for them. It's cheap, it's lazy, and it sounds absolutely horrible! As for harmonizers, if they're used as an occasional effect, or to add lots of voices when you've only got 1 or 2 singers then that's totally cool... But it won't have the same impact as the real thing, especially live!
My current cab, a Markbass 104HR is a fantastic cab. I really like Ampeg, and they have always been my favourite, but I think that Markbass has taken that position, which is something I never thought I would say. A real nice bass presence, felt as well as heard, but without that boom/flub that often comes with a bass heavy sound.
+1 Very sensitive cabs too so they put out much more volume with the same amp wattage/settings
