1.
The VLE gets a little more use depending on the situation, but I don't go for an uber-crisp sound anyway, and it will usually just be to adjust it to certain rooms or bands.
Totally, the VLE is actually such a valuable tool, should be on everything!
2. I went through a period where I was only playing when I had a gig, which meant I sometimes didn't pick a bass up for a month at a time. Partly due to personal problems though. I'm well and truly back into the swing of things now At the moment, i always make sure I have a bass out of it's bag and in plain view so that there's no effort involved if I feel like messing around on it. Seems to be working well so far I rarely go a day without at least playing a note on it.
3. Pointing speakers at ears will help, as will experimenting with adding some midrange
4.
All sounds like a load of cobblers to me. Ramps for thumb rest, yes, for slapping???? Fingers get trapped under strings that are too close to the body, not the other way around.
I've got a massive cutwaway on my 6 string so when popping i hook my finger way too far round the string to play fluidly. But then I am sh*te at slap and only do it for a laugh
5.
Really? Do people do this? Can they look at themselves in the mirror?
I got flak for three years straight when a Markbass 4x10 turned up at my front door, I learned with that particular lady that if you want an easy life just keep quiet
6. Recently become single so as soon as I have some money i can start stockpiling
7. If you want them to feel tighter, try something with a hexagonal core, like D'Addario Prosteel, or Elites! I use a .125 on my 5 string and it's tight as a nun's anus! That's strung through the body though.
8. You guys must have really impressed them! I understand that, best to have peace of mind than to worry about it I guess! I've not heard of any shops that rent out instruments, though it can't hurt to ask! Are there any nearby bass playing friends you could ask? Get them to come along to the gig and buy them a couple of pints as payment maybe
9. Awesome to hear you've been offered a New Year gig! I doubt your Ibanez will let you down mate, just make sure to put a fresh battery in it before the gig!
10. Amazing price for an amazing bass! Cheaper than a passive Peavey Millenium!
11. Maybe turn off the Big Muff if you want a clear tone Haha just kidding mate! Is your Gain particularly high up? And what is EQ set to? Are you boosting any frequencies? It's usually best to cut some frequencies rather than boost others to get your sound if at all possible. Hope that helps a little
12. Well that's different! I like it!
13.
if only I could find a 5 knob comp with metering in a 1590A casing then I would be sorted. I await Max's micro comp with mucho interest, but anyway I love me my MXR.
I forgot about the SFX micro comp thingy... I wonder if it will be multiband! Or wiould that be expecting way too much???
14. Oh sorry mate, I forgot you said it was the programmable I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I don't know for certain... I'm sure somebody here will know. But if not, contacting Tech 21 will be a good plan as their customer support is pretty good!
15. I'm not sure not having tried myself... but you might be able to have a jack going from the Parallel Out to the transmitter and put that on your pedalboard. The only thing is, I think the Parallel Out just gives a clean uneffected sound...
16.
I'm going to agree on those filters! The VPF is removing your mids and boosting your bass and treble- the VLE is removing your treble. All you have left is subby bass. As folks have said, they have a very strong effect, and at 50% of the way up you have some serious EQ working against you. I expect that rolling them right down will have you and your drummer grinning again!
I use hardly any VPF at all now, the bass boost muddies up the tone, the treble boost adds harsh frequencies, and if you remove too much midrange you lose all the character and definition in your notes
17. I used to have an Ultrabass 4x10 combo and I really hated it. Very muddy without really any way of getting rid of it. I have shared a bill a couple of times with another band where the bassist used an Ultrabass head through my Markbass cab one time, and an Ampeg cab the second, and I though he sounded brilliant both times! So maybe get the Behringer head, and buy a second hand cab from somebody here?
18.
I have the same rig too although 98% of my gigs are on double bass these days. I think it sounds great and I certainly don't hear any "wallow" or over-active limiting, even when I play slab. Each to his own I guess.
Might be a combination of having two cabs instead of just one, and generally not having to turn up as much
19.
I am one who never hears a good sound from anyone using a Markbass and I think it is their cabs. Big fan of the MB 102 combo but you can't turn them up... fortunately. It is a practice/rehearsal amp, IMO I've used various versions of the 112 combo as well with extn cabs and even on stage you hear it start to wallow. And whenever I am out front that is what I hear a few times over...so much so that when I discussed this with a bass playing mate, he said he bought Epis 12's instead..to go with the MB amp. If you know the sounds of Epifanis with their soft pillow, or low mid thud, as I would describe it... that is the attempt of someone trying to tighten up the low end...so to pick these over MB cabs, says a whole lot. Just my 2p....
It's the bloody limiter, it destroys your tone and that 'open'ness when you turn up past 9 o'clock on the master
20. Just randomly, this reminded me of when I lent my F1 + 104HF to a bassist on a gig. He was using a cheap ass BC rich bass with a P pickup. I set the EQ flat for him, and put the VLE at 8 o'clock and the VPF at 10 o'clock. It was quite honestly the best Precision Bass tone I had ever heard!
21.
If the previous replies don't work that'll be my next step, thanks Chris
Try out a cheaper one first of all to give you an idea of what they can do. I started with a Behringer DC9 which I got for £15!
22.
Which pedal mate ?
Aguilar TLC, it's the most in-obstrusive sounding comp I've used when set to very heavy compression, so that the output is the same across all the strings, and when using different techniques
23. I use compression to combat this, the cheap and easy way out
24. I've got three Levy's ones, because they're the best value out there and so high quality. The oldest one I've had for about 6 years and it looks brand new. The bit where the holes are is so thick it's never gonna get frayed.
25.
I've been hoping my missing one will turn up for 8 months. This will be a cheap way to guarantee it does in the next few days.
