1. I've just seen this on Markbass' Facebook page Chris Wolstenholme, bassist for Muse, used Markbass gear on the recording of the band’s latest album, “The 2nd Law”, and has been using a Markbass rig on tour. 2. If you want the strings to last longer try Elixirs, I've just picked up a set of their stainless steels and I'm in love with the tone! If they last as long as they say they do it's well worth £30 a set
3. I've used Markbass heads with the following cabinets: 2x Markbass 102HF Markbass 104HF Ashdown MAG 410 (front ported) Ashdown MAG 410 (rear ported) 2x Ashdown MAG 210 (rear ported) Barefaced Super 12 T Ampeg SVT 610 HLF Peavey TVX 410 Out of all these combinations the only ones I didn't like were the rear ported Ashdown cabs. Everything else sounded amazing! The loudest and clearest tone was from the Markbass 4x10 or the Barefaced.
4. Two of my basses have this on a couple of the heads. It's never made a difference, and visually it's barely noticeable. I replaced the heads on my 4 string Peavey International though, and the little washers look so much better and more solidly built.
5. In a 2 - 3 hour gig I usually make less than 5 mistakes so I'm happy with that
6. If your basses have the option to string through the bridge or the body, go bridge only! Lighter gauges are good, but I seem to remember Ernie Ball strings feeling fairly good and they have round cores
7. My Grind set me back £250 and this really does look like a much higher quality build!
8.
Elixir could be the way forward, I have tried them before and liked the feel and sound. I forgot to say the recommendations must be available for six string basses.
They don't make a .032 gauge string in the stainless steels yet, but hopefully they will soon! You can get them in nickels though which I imagine might still be brighter than most flats
9. I do this all the time mate, especially on 4 strings as I'm used to the width of a 6! I only noticed it when somebody on here pointed it out to me. Now that I'm conscious of it I'm starting to prevent myself doing it, which makes playing and fretting cleaner and much easier. The fact that you've identified it is enough for now!
10. Try coated strings maybe? Elixir stainless strings are a hell of a lot smoother than Prosteels, and the sound works for me
11. I think it's one output per pickup, apart from that I don't really know! I remember the one i tried being extremely neck heavy though
12. Awful! You should sneakily unplug the bottom cab and see if they notice...
13.
WHAT!? :-P
I must do more homework,cheers!
14.
Steve DiGiorgio would like a word with you on fretless not cutting through. He's made an entire career playing in extreme metal bands with a fretless bass. Used to use Carvin and a custom ESP F-series fretless 5's but these days uses Mjolnir 5 and 6-string Thor Basses. The album "Individual Thought Patterns" by Death demonstrates great fretless play and that was a crappy copy he slapped a Fender neck on.
I had no idea he played fretless! He really does have a great cutting sound
15.
sounds a bit creepy
He could at least been honest about why he really wants the bubble wrap
16. My approach is basically one bass per tuning. If you can get away with playing one bass then that's the idea situation, unless you want a backup!
17. I strung my bass up with these last night... LOVE them! Very satisfied with the brightness, and the smooth feel is very nice. but not so smooth that my fingers slip and slide all over the place. If they keep their tone til the end of the year they'll be well worth the money to me!
18. Hehehe I love seeing this pop up every so often
19. Changing the battery must be a huge pain in the arse
20.
Seriously? I will try... but they are really good for a set of 3 which cost only 15 euros where I live...
It's always worth a try! Rotosound have great customer service too. It's just a shame I don't get on with either brands of string
21.
What is the need for a low A though?
Loosening stubborn bowel movements.
22. At this price i'm surprised it lasted more than 30 minutes!
23.
.152? f*** that is a heavy string. do you use the claw of a bear to play it?
Actually, when tuned to low A it has the same tension/feel as a .130 in B
24. While it's still possible to comment on sale threads.... This is an AMAZING bass! Those big single coil pickups sound so good! nice and loud, and aggressive if you need. Makes a Stingray sound like a wet haddock
25.
I think the D'Addario Pro Steels are actually a tad bit brighter than the Elixir Stainless strings. I haven't used a set of Pro Steels for quite some time, so my memory might be a bit foggy. You naturally do get a little bit less of string squeak with the Elixirs because of the coating. That could possibly be the reason why they don't sound as hyperactive as the Pro Steels. Little things like that make a difference. The Elixirs are very good strings and do give you that 'hi-fi' tone if thats what floats your boat, but I prefer them to other stainless string brands because they seem to have a mellower mid-range response.
Thanks for the detailed comparison! I might have to try some when I wear out my next set
