What strings are you currently using?
I think the D'Addario Pro Steels are actually a tad bit brighter than the Elixir Stainless strings. I haven't used a set of Pro Steels for quite some time, so my memory might be a bit foggy. You naturally do get a little bit less of string squeak with the Elixirs because of the coating. That could possibly be the reason why they don't sound as hyperactive as the Pro Steels. Little things like that make a difference. The Elixirs are very good strings and do give you that 'hi-fi' tone if thats what floats your boat, but I prefer them to other stainless string brands because they seem to have a mellower mid-range response.
Thanks for the detailed comparison! I might have to try some when I wear out my next set -
So, who can name the various bits and bobs.....

That nut is shockingly bad, look at the string spacing! -
I recently switched to the new Elixir Stainless .45-130. I used the Elixir nickel strings for about 6yrs before then. I have also used D'Addario Pro Steels and DR Hi-Beams. All very good strings.
Interesting! How would you compare the Elixir Stainless to D'Addario Prosteels when it comes to initial brightness? -
A couple of times with heavier gauge strings, I've found the B string sounds indefinitely pitched when first fitted, as the string is too stiff to conform to the break angle over the bridge. Pressing the string down just in front of the bridge a couple of times to put a bend in it at the sadde will help with this.
I have to do this with my .152 gauge string so this is worth checking!

I own a Squier strat and its a nice guitar actually! And being a Peavey fan I actually want to own one of the higher up Raptor models one day, but these should be fine too, maybe even better than the Squier!

Crikey that's an amazing price!

Personally, I like seeing lots of gear behind the band My approach to my own gear though is to try and make it as easy as possible to carry my own into the venue. I've got it down to two quick trips now! Trip 1: Backpack with amp, tools and leads, two basses in one hand, pedalboard in other Trip 2: Carry 4x10 in on my own Job done!
-
If it was me, I would look at used Peavey and Ashdown cabs. a 4x10 can usually be had for £100 or less!
-
£325? That's the combined cost of three of my basses I know what I'd rather have!

A lightweight backup head to go with a barefaced super 12
chrismuzz replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
I see you have a Sansamp and a VT Bass! You can get a fantastic sound with Markbass heads through a Barefaced S12 with them! If you want something more aggressive though I would lean towards the TC or the Orange (though compared to the other options the OTB is pretty big!) -

D'Addario Prosteels! My previous favourites were Elites Stadium Series, and Ernie Ball slinkies. You can't go wrong with those three! Rotosounds are pretty damn popular too. -
For my left hand I've got a "whichever finger gets there first" technique. The one closest to the fret usually wins so it works for me.
This, in my opinion, is the right approach... For both hands! If your playing feels comfortable and sounds good, then there's no point in worrying about which finger goes where. Overthinking will be more of an obstacle!
By the time I'd tuned that, the bloody gig would be over!
I'd tune it before the gig, but it would still take me until the end of the set to figure out which is the E string
So, is that 2 more strings than you need, or 8??
Somewhere between 5 and 10.. And there are way too many frets

What the hell... I thought you were all just going off on one because he was playing lightning fast shred stuff.. But that was actually terrible
-
It's just a 6 string though really

As above, Peavey Grinds are fantastic instruments. My first 6er was one of the Shine ones with two humbuckers. Also a great bass!
I've never noticed much difference with string-thru bodies to be honest. What do you have arriving in the post? Yes it's way cheaper and really satisfying to get spot on! I find an essential ingredient in 'clank' is very little neck relief. I don't have a truss rod but mine is built with basically zero which means I can clack away if I like. I've had basses by the same company which were built later which had more relief, set up for the tastes of a wider audience I guess, and found them lacking the same feel and responsiveness.
Another Peavey... Zodiac DE Sorpio! Should be arriving today! Yeah I have a very tiny amount of relief too, just enough so that I don't get buzz when I play with a more 'reasonable' right hand technique
The stainless strings are also naked just like the nickels.
Goood, I like naked strings

Plenty of decent reviews on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/FENDER-099-1809-000-GIG-STAND/dp/B005MR6JLA Never heard of these before... Might get one myself! I'm always balancing mine against walls and whatnot at gigs. Have you seen these too?

I like the tighter feel you get from through body stringing, due to the sharper angle past the saddles. I find if I play real hard with bridge stringing on SOME bridges, the strings can pop off the saddles. The classic Fender style ones don't have this problem though.
