Thanks for that, very useful info! I'm not much of a synth/filter user, but I'm anticipating I may have to use a little for an upcoming project. How does it perform as a DI box for recording?
I haven't recorded with it yet, but I've tested the DI straight into a PA and its a good quality sound, especially using one of the many amp sims!
1. Do they suffer any loss of bottom end/guts, etc? 2. Is it easy to change between patches whilst playing? 3. Are the synth or filter sounds any good? 4. Does it behave okay when used with other pedals?
1. No, probably the most transparent multi effects unit there is! If it wasn't I would not have even considered getting it. 2. You have to hold one of the footswitches down for a few seconds to go into 'patch mode', then you hit a footswitch to cycle through the patches. It's a bit of a ball ache if you want to turn individual effects on and off within the patches, but if not just keep it in patch mode! 3. I'm not much of a synth/filter user, but I found they sounded pretty decent and tracked pretty well even for me not being used to them. 4. I use mine with a few analog pedals. Works fine, but if you have them sharing an un-isolated power supply you do get a strange high pitched electronic noise constantly. For now, I use the ZNR (gate) to deal with the problem when I'm not playing... It's not noticeable on a gig but I will be getting an isolated thingy eventually for it. Hope that helps! All in all you couldn't get a better unit for the price... I went from this: To this: And am very happy. I call it an upgrade!

I've never even held a fretless bass
I got a chrome one so I could look at the reflection of a tool every time I strapped it on.
You have your bass at crotch height then i take it

bassist stereotype - which one are you?
chrismuzz replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
The bassist stereotype I was taught in Holland was sth. about honest, serving, hard-working people with modesty and a philosophical outlook on life. They could however both be geniuses and simpletons.
I can be cocky when I'm in a very good mood... And with regards to work of any kind, if it's not something that genuinely interests me I like to scrape by with the bare minmum -
You mean get a bass with a burl ives top and loads of laminates and drool on it and suck on it all day and night instead of treating as your music slave
Hahaha One reason I love playing my Peaveys... Not only do they work for me on so many levels, but I don't have to worry about getting a few battle scars .... I was playing it with my fist at last night's gig!
I think I have evolved over the years and I won't let an instrument be a f***ing comfort blanket.
But how cool would that be?? You could be all warm and cosy while jamming away But no I get what you mean man... When I was a teenager I was part of the anti-plectrum brigade, but have since realised how silly it all is
To me music is music. The more I do it the less I give a sh*t about how I make it. I play a few instruments, but all I care about is the song. I just make music, and that's all that's important.
Totally man.... people worry too much
Cheers - I'm equally as proud of my Warwick, they make some beautiful looking & sounding basses. That's a very nice Peavey Grind too if I'm not mistaken in your Avatar. I've never been brave enough to try a six string.
Yep it is! I love Peaveys way too much... My first bass was a Peavey, and now I own 3 of them and nothing else 6 string basses are actually easiest to play on, once you get used to the size of the neck and the usually tighter string spacing. You don't have to move up and down the neck nearly as much... Plus a lot of the time people will think you're a decent player without even having to hear you

It's the long hair and the beard. Guitar players never have beards -
If you are unable to play naked in public without being arrested for indecent exposure then your strap is at the wrong height.
Brilliant! I've got a way to go then
Not only did I feel I looked like a bit of a muso (not in a good way, I mean the way where you look like a T-Rex), it gave me backache! (which was an unpleasant surprise) so its going back to where it was and I'll just keep practicing.
Interesting! I used to get sharp pains in my back, around the right shoulder blade when I was a teenager... Had the strap pretty damn high then! Maybe it was due to my plucking arm being at such a weird angle?

Sounds good! As long as you know we're all going to force you to buy the bass
i used it 3-4 times everyday for longer than 5min, building up slowly each time and then reducing speed gradually. 5min once a day may just not be enough
Must not be a great workout then! It takes me about 6 minutes I do 4x12 reps of wrist curls, then I do another 4x12 of reverse ones (palms facing down). Doing this 2x a week equates to a total of 24 minutes of isolated wrist/forearm exercises a week and that's plenty!
-
On the subject of wrist exercises helping or not helping with bass playing... I have been seriously weightlifting for about 4 months now, and twice a week I do dumbbell wrist curls. It hasn't helped my bass playing in the way of speed or anything.. But it HAS dramatically increased my strength and endurance so that I can play hard for much much longer without my arm feeling fatigued! I do 2 hour long metal gigs quite often and I can definitely assure you I've noticed a difference
I wear my Bass quite high..so its in the same position when I sit down..
I used to do this, but most basses hang in a slightly position than they would be if sat on my leg which throws me off a bit
Thanks man.. i'm considering it! but would like to make the jump to a 6 string first rather than the 7 string.
I made the jump from 4 to 6 and had a harder time than you seem to be with the 7! They don't come about often so I reckon you should go for it for sure
