To be fair they are not usually guitarists . More usually they are women, whose primary skill in terms of physical dexterity is using a nail file , credit card and a Pifco Vibratory Home Massager .
Then the only justification you need is that it's bigger and heavier, so it's a guitar for PROPER men
If you try and tell that to people who think playing the bass is easier however , then they think you are making excuses .
Just get them to play a complicated lick on the guitar, and then say "OK, now play it on bass"
-
I would say that it depends on the style of music. In rock/metal, basslines are mostly simpler than the guitar parts, but it's usually the opposite for funk.
I think its because there's never been a 'golden' era, but that's because there's never been a poor era. Rickenbacker's build quality has been consistently high so people will buy a new one with confidence. There's no need to pay a premium for a vintage one in all but the most exceptional circumstances.
I played a new one a few weeks back and the build quality and attention to detail was impeccable, so this is probably right!
hah! its in my box of effects! (theres actually three leads in there!)
Sweet I take it you go direct instead of using an amp? I've had awesome results doing that before. Thanks to the variety of quality gear out there its all you need!
At the mo my bass is running a flat eq with the bass on the amp cut by about 15% I know that the cab im using is fairly 'subby' at times , and i think this is some coloration to some of the notes im playing, maybe its more the case of looking into buying a compressor?
Interesting thought, I originally got a compressor because when playing my 6 string tuned to low A I had to be really careful not to let the low notes swamp the mix. It helped a lot!
There must be a w***ers cramp joke in there somewhere
FFS haha... probably I actually put it down to the PS2 controller mostly... honest!
You can get CTS or RSI at any age.
Yep. I had CTS at 18! Completely gone now

Never used one, I just turn down the Lows on my amp to suit the stage/venue
Barefaced Super 12T, and you won't need to worry about bi-amping. You will sound better. Better tone, clearer, louder, punchier etc etc. The only downside is you will have to save some more!
/thread
If you want a cab that is able to cope with larger function venues but still weighs under 25 kg and still comes in at under £500, then you're probably looking at a used light neo 4x10. Maybe a Schroeder 4x10, which are about 25kg.
That would be my suggestion too. My 8 ohm Markbass 104HF has never been lacking in the volume department! If you love the sound of your Ashdown though you could look at getting a pair of 2x10s?
-
Not too bad, but the one in the OP does look like a toy. And the whammy bars just look stupid.
at 35 quid a set (average) its a bit hard to do experimenting!
£35 is a lot to be paying for a set of strings! A 4 string set of Elixirs will set you back around 30 and last months and months!
-
I'm not a fan of the strings, but I am a fan of the company - I've always found them to be very helpful, and Jason How took the time out to correspond with me about strings a while ago. Proper customer service.
Ditto. It makes me wish I liked the strings as I'd be delighted to support the company, especially with them being UK based!

It sounds like it COULD be due to non-straight wrists as mentioned above, so taking some time to focus on just that every practice session will probably make a difference. You'll find when you do play with straight wrists the effort involved in fretting/plucking is a LOT less too Cod Liver Oil supplements are great, I've been using them for the last few months and my joints seem to be a lot healthier. One other thing that's really helped me is going to the gym and lifting weights. I do 'wrist curls' once a week to target those specifically, but pretty much any exercise which involves holding a weight in your hands will strengthen your hands and wrists! Again, with those being stronger, you will be working a lot less hard when playing and your stamina will improve! I played bass for 8 hours one day this week which I would never have been able to do this time last year!
On the rare occasions I decide not to use a pick, I will often use my thumb and either two or three fingers. I picked this habit up from playing the banjo. I find I can get a much more consistent sound when galloping with thumb and first two fingers than just using three fingers.
Cool technique! I don't think I've ever seen that used on the bass before
He also has plenty of amplification and a very light touch.
Yeah I was surprised to hear he uses a light touch as his technique sounds quite aggressive!
just my bass and box of effects. what else do you really need?
a lead?
Other than that, yeah, time for a new pedal. Check out these reviews - great site: http://www.ovnilab.com/
+1 Brilliant website. Thanks to that resource I upgraded my Behringer DC9 to the perfect compressor without having to mess around buying and trying a bunch that didn't do what I wanted.
They look pretty cool, but they're not the lowest profile, my Hosa pancake jacks are 7mm high. Or was it diameter you were talking about ?
Ah I stand corrected!

Latest incarnation! I've now got my Sansamp, Ashdown, and Marshall pedals in the loop of the MXR Noise Clamp...So when I switch off the noise clamp my signal goes from the compressor straight to the Zoom B3 (which I've got hooked up to a Diago Isolator Adaptor). I've replaced my patch leads with the Diago Patchfactory kit (smallest plugs ever, they're only 11mm!), and raised the back row with some of those Diago Pedal Risers. Oh, and it's a Diago Gigman board... Diago are pretty good
I'll have to investigate those pedals!
Both dirt cheap!
I fitted a matching SD 1/4 lb Jazz at the bridge & it's a real powerhouse now
I love the sound of the Quarter Pound in the bridge, but in a live setting I get lots of feedback with high gain I got some copper tape shielding put on the bass which helps a lot, but the true test will be Saturday's gig! If it's still bad I'll consider putting a Hot Stack in.
-
I love it. Great crispy gravel-path crunch with a smooth bottom.
The main ingredient there is the Ashdown Hyperdrive! The high mids are mega distorted, and then it goes through the Marshall Jackhammer on a low gain setting which just smooths everything over.

Peavey Zodiac DE Scorpio! The Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders it came with are incredible pickups. The bridge pickup does hiss a little though with it being a single coil so I'm thinking of swapping it out for a Hot Stack after seeing (I think it was Lozz) recommend it to someone else.
