I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone here. Paying tribute to the late Layne Staley, and letting the BassBaton have a shot at recording. Didn't come out too bad really! Done and done! I may even use it on the 16th too if nobody nabs it off of me that night!

This always happens. The best way to do it is to get the drummer to play as he normally would, and base your levels around that. Luckily I've only been in one band where the guitarist insisted on drowning everything else out... and he always told me to bloody turn down I left that band...

[/quote] That truly sucks dude Luckily the majority of shops I've been to recently have all been great! Two that stick out the most are Academy Of Sound in Stoke, and PMT in Manchester. Staff in both of these stores went out of their way to make sure I got to try out what I wanted to, with no pushy sales techniques.

stringbusters do single strings Also,have you tried coated Elixirs? They keep their tone for a really long time so even if you buy a full set for £30 odd you'll end up saving in the long run!

I just use heavier gauge strings for tuning down, it's all good! GENERALLY I go up by .005 for every semitone, so in standard tuning the bottom string would be .100 and for D tuning a .110. But a lot of it depends on personal preference and what bass you use

I gave a lesson yesterday and discovered that this was exactly the problem the guy was having. The fact that his bass needed a setup quite badly wasn't helping matters either. You will be using so much more effort to play if your action is high!

It will cost you more in the long run as you'll be likely to want a 2nd bass again in future. I know this from experience, which is why I now own 5

I've never used a Promethean, but I know that the Markbass 2x10 combo will be more convenient than a seperate head and cab. It's more than enough for most 'normal' venues, sounds incredible, and I think you can tilt it back into monitor position too!

I forgot to comment on the track in the OP Excellent guitar and bass sound! Clearer and more high quality mix than a lot of major label releases!

Another case of hearing with your eyes rather than your ears! I have had comments and questions about my tone from many golden eared purists, and I've never owned anything with valves in it in my life

Pedal wise, I prefer a compressor first in the chain. Seeing as yours is rack mount, with a noise gate, I would personally use it in the FX loop so it will still tame any noise from your pedals.

I was advised to use my Sansamp last in the chain, but after chopping and changing I MUCH prefer the sound of it 2nd, after my compressor, and before any other drives. That way the Sansamp is more like a pre, I add some gnarly distortion with a 2nd pedal, then smooth it all over with the third, mild overdrive.
