Can someone talk me into, or, out of this, please...?
chrismuzz replied to dougal's topic in Bass Guitars
Nowadays I only buy basses for keeps, so I don't have a problem getting stuff done to them. Not that you'd fetch much for a 2nd or 3rd hand Peavey anyway! If you mod it, and end up loving the bass, AND the sound, the only thing I'd try to talk you out of would be getting rid of it! Having a sub £1000 bass that's perfect in every way is a luxury that some will never know Much respect to you for experimenting with just one bass for an entire year, I could never do that! It will be a really interesting experience for you I'll bet -
You know you're making a rod for your own back, don't you..?
The way I see it, as long as I'm chasing something new, I won't try to change something I've already got *fingers crossed*
I can well live without those.
If you're using it as a preamp then yeah! Unless you need the DI of course. I considered getting one myself but actually my rig is perfect for my needs now The only thing left to GAS for is pickups, and Elixir strings in gauges that don't yet exist lol

My next 2 gigs are the 13th and the 16th and I'm based in Stoke on Trent if anyone nearby is using it before then?
I`ve just bought the B3 and very pleased with it. Way too much on there for my needs, or my understanding, but it does exactly what I want. I now get the sound of my amp from the B3, so am using the amp as a power amp. Bit of compression as well. So now, should I do DI only gigs, or have provided rigs, I still get my sound FOH. And having the on-board tuner - well that`s just incredibly useful. Just wish that the power supply lead was longer, and a bit sturdier.
The cool thing about it is even though you're only using a small fraction of what its capable of, its STILL a bargain! At the moment Im only using mine for Chorus, Flanger, big muff, and reverb, and as a USB interface for recording. I think this bit of kit is gonna stay with me!
Gaaah!! Do the vids Dan, quick!! Does it do the B3 thing only in one 'stompbox'? I sincerely hope so!!
Yeah, except it's 4 effects at once, but you can't use an expression pedal with it, or as a USB interface.

It took me 9 years of bass playing before I owned a bass with a P or J pickup in it, so I'm probably going the opposite way

This sounds really lame, but playing in front of a mirror actually helps out your 'super cool stage moves'. I've managed to filter out some stuff that I used to do that looked REALLY stupid, as well as actually improving my playing technique.
Innit! I mean Inti!
I actually miss him.

I used to stand and stare at my fretboard for the entire gig, until I saw how much fun other bands were having on stage, and how much the energy bounces off onto the audience! I rather enjoy moving about all over the place, headbanging, interacting with people and all that stuff, and don't mind sacrificing perfect playing for it. Live music is about the atmosphere after all.. besides it's rare that people notice/remember a f***up here and there

On Saturday night's gig, I took my bass into the toilets and had a piss while playing Killswitch Engage - My Last Serenade. My proudest live moment so far
OT- I´ve just notice that you´re located on Slash`s place of birth (at least that´s what I remember from the days of being a massive GN`R fan!) Back to topic-now, here´s a sig bass I could buy- Duff´s P-Bass! lol
Yep! I've lived here for 5 years now and I can see why he didn't stick around Duff's bass is WELL nice, but I'm more than happy with my Dave Ellefson sig Peavey. It only cost me £150 and I managed to do this with it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmDMvx6WjnA
How about a 6 string Fender from the bass player in Alien Ant Farm?... At least Bello is still playing and has been a reference in the metal scene fr the past 25 years or so... I wonder what´s on Fender executive´s mind...
Exactly! I didn't even know it existed until it was posted here a few weeks back! I guess that because Fender are basically the market leaders, they don't have to bother advertising. Kind of sh*tty for artists who have a signature instrument, unless they're just happy to have their name on the headstock and be associated with the brand.
Ok... But it would be nice if they could have backed that up with numbers... I wonder how well do those Nate Mendel and others P-Bass signature rate, compared to the FB bass...
i think with the amount of 'signature' basses that Fender make, it'd be very rare for any of them to sell well. I mean they're practically all Precisions or Jazzes (or both) with nothing special about them except a name on the headstock. I never even heard of anybody buying a Steve Bailey signature 6 string Jazz!

Speeding up playing with heavy strings
chrismuzz replied to richardjmorgan's topic in Theory and Technique
I actually prefer playing around the neck pickup area because the strings don't fight against your fingers so much. Makes it much easier to get that clanky picking sound (if thats what you like). -
I've tried all sorts but my last settings from a pub gig on Saturday was this (I've based it on clock settings):
I had the best sound I ever had on Saturday night and used the following: Gain - 12 o'clock Master - 11 o'clock Low - 10 o'clock Mid low - 12 o'clock Mid high - 10 o'clock High - 12 o'clock VLE - 9 o'clock VPF - 9 o'clock I also had the tweeter on half way. SO much clarity! I was loud and clear without muddying up the mix and the entire band sounded better. You might not need to turn the High Mids down as much since I use an F1 which is more pronounced in that area.
What about these? http://item.mobilewe...d=281034618680#
I am such a dick when it comes to screws and wood (and unintentional innuendos), so I should probably get a few of these!
-
A very late night recording this one, plus whatever other excuse you feel like putting in for this one being a bit sloppy in places I used just the P pickup for this one, in true Steve Harris style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SowpW3rE6Kw
To be honest, I think that if you can get your neck problem fixed, so the screws hold the neck properly, it will make a huge difference to your action and may not even need any other work done to it.
This. I got my Scorpio cheap as chips because the neck had this problem, stuck a few matches in the screw holes, and put a shim in the neck and it's awesome now!
I'd hang on to the Thumb until you decide you want to keep the new 6.
Definitely agree with this. Even if you have a "one in, one out" rule! Either get a cheaper 6 string to see if it's for you, and look for a 6 string Thumb further down the line, or just treat yourself and get one outright
-
Another alternative is to either get the bridge routed and sunk into the body
I'm considering getting exactly the same thing done to my newest 6!
