The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
fretmeister replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
and a straight fret version!!! https://www.ibanez.com/eu/products/detail/ehb1505s_1p_01.html -
Very very nice! I love the sound of them but the neck is too chunky for me, and the Wimbish models with the J necks are too spendy for me!

Bass Amp Sound Reinforcement - ? pedal or new rig?
fretmeister replied to Kebabkid's topic in Effects
I have that Behringer too - it's very useful. I would also like them to update it with a mid control, but when I use mine I start with the Bass and Treble controls really low so there is a mid hump anyway. Then I adjust from there. Usually have to turn the output up a bit but it works well. Aside from the mid control I can't see a reason to buy the real thing anymore. £19.48 -v- £239.00. There's always some who say "what about longevity / reliability?" but unless I have to buy 12 of the Behringers I'm still ahead of the game! -
Has anyone put there owned both a barefaced and a markbass 410?
fretmeister replied to Paul C's topic in Amps and Cabs
I’ve had a pair of BF 1x10 (one with a tweeter) and a Markbass 2x10 - the new Energy model. I’m assuming it’s basically scalable! Both great cabs, but I prefer the Mark Bass. It’s the sound in my head. There is a bit of a treble roll off but I find that to be cutting the annoying ice pick frequencies rather than anything that gets in the way of EQ-ing. They do sound very different. I found I was forever tweaking with the BF set, and hardly ever with the MB. I owned an ABM410 about 20 years ago and I’m never going back to that weight ever again! -
Everything about it is wrong. But for some reason I really love that. Stupid brain! 😂

His place is at risk from the LA fire, as is Joe Bonamassa’s massive guitar collection. -
No Gas Gear - what have you never thought of replacing?
fretmeister replied to redbandit599's topic in General Discussion
My Sandberg TT4 Superlight, a Fender Standard Strat that I bought new in 2003 and my Boss BC-1X compressor. With that bass and compressor I am happy to plug into just about everything and not really worry about it. -
Bass Amp Sound Reinforcement - ? pedal or new rig?
fretmeister replied to Kebabkid's topic in Effects
At this point I think a new amp is in order. I can see you trying out more and more pedals and ending up spending the same in total as biting the bullet and treating yourself to a new amp rig. I've been down a similar road and spent far more than I had to. The sound in my head was quite easy to identify but I was doing it with the wrong gear. -
What's the bridge string spacing on the 5 string? I'm already annoyed that the nut is 45mm instead of 44.5 as it should be!

Combo BASS Amps. fender, bugera , crate)

This brings back memories of that one time, at band camp, when I did 3 tons of LSD and after it had worn off, asked my friends, "So... did I do anything stupid...?" -

How are you finding the Legends? they are one of the few flats I have not tried. Apparently they are roundcore so they are supposed to be a bit more flexible than the equivalent hex core strings - is that your experience? -
Home recording or banging my head against a wall.
fretmeister replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
Reaper is dead easy to use with a Scarlett. Loads of YouTube tutorials for it as well. Then you either mic up your cab or use plugins to simulate amp tones and so on. Should be recording something within 30 mins. -
Playing basslines on the Baritone Saxophone
fretmeister replied to joshplaysthesax's topic in General Discussion
Uptown Funk works very well. My old big band did that and the baris would either play the bass part or trade with it. Sir Duke definitely works too, as does Poker Face. -
All my instruments have a strap attached all the time. I cannot be bothered to adjust them when swapping. And different straps suit different instruments. If I only had 1 strap then I would definitely be the person who turned up at a gig without it!

I'm going to try and save what I would have spent over the year. I really miss having a good 5 string. So that's my plan - Start a fund to save for a Stingray Special 5 string. Obviously if I win the lottery this abstinence pledge can do one!

Limited time Joe Dart Signature Bass, Go…
fretmeister replied to AlexDelores's topic in General Discussion
I'd love to have one. I really like JD's playing and I'm a fan of heavy compression and of those EB flats he uses. If I had the money I'd have bought a USA version already, but at the moment I don't have the cash for the cheap one! Hopefully they'll do another run at some point, and figure out how to get the shipping cheaper. I bet they would have doubled the orders if the shipping outside of the USA wasn't so high. -

Anyone know if custom neck plates are available- custom engraving? I’ve got a Fender plate but as I m building a parts bass it’s not a Fender so I’d like something else on it. ta.

I’m very interested in the maths. That’s why I weighed my original tuners on my Ray5 and saved about 227g. On a different bass I also swapped the heavy brass control knobs for plastic ones as that saved over 20g per knob. That was another 80g. That’s 307g running total savings. Then I decided to go passive. That lost a knob and pot completely and the 9V battery. A Duracell 9v is 45g. Then I took the pickguard off too to save another 25g. As any engineer working in a field where weight is an issue, cumulative effects are also very important. As you can see I got very close to reducing the weight by an entire pound, with 227g of that at the far end of the neck making massive improvements in balance as well. That was a saving of approx 13% on the total bass weight. That’s very far from a couple of chocolate bars. Have a crack at explaining the fulcrums if you want. I’ll get my daughter to check your maths when she’s having a break from working on wing design and wind tunnel maths. EDIT: I found my spreadsheet. The pickguard and screws together weighed 77g. Yes, I am that obsessed with weight to have spreadsheets. Colin Chapman was right about it for cars and it works for basses too.

Replacing pedal footswitches with toggle switches
fretmeister replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Repairs and Technical
Are the existing switches really switches and not signal sending units? Some foot switches look like physical items but actually just send a trigger signal for the actual change to be done elsewhere in the pedal.
