1.
What are the costs of hosting and running site? what bandwidth are we using? should this data be available in the community?
There's more to it than hosting and bandwidth costs. There are also development and software upgrade costs. The only free items involved in BC are the Mods and Admins (although I keep getting told that Kiwi & Ped have both had to have prescribed medication since I arrived). IMHO the 'actual' costs of running the site aren't really something for public dissemination. I can't think of another similarly relevant site that does it and that's really only the business of the guys who have paid, and continue to pay, the bills every month - as they have done for donkeys years (and I suspect have had to dip into their own pockets to subsidise BC on numerous occasions).
 2.
My only concern is that if only 4% of sellers want to pay a small amount for selling through BC then will there be a big drop-off in the number of items for sale?
That was a thought I initially had when this subject was broached a little while ago. However, when you look at the other tangible options, you could be paying up to 10% of the final sale value in commission fees instead of a fixed single fee. Obviously, on smaller sales, this wouldn't be much, but it's a hell of a lot when you start selling equipment running into the hundreds or thousands of £s. I think people already know that BassChat is one of, if not the, place to go if you're looking for any bass related information and realise that we offer a much more bass targeted audience than most of the other 'sales site' alternatives. I don't think it'll take too long for potential advertisers to get over their reluctance to pay a modest amount to get access to that audience and understand that if their item is saleable and the price is right, it'll probably sell.
 3.
Does that mean the end of the 'this is a feeler' and 'not sure i want to part with this' posts?
Not necessarily, but it will certainly deter all but the most financially unastute fishermen.
 4. Good grief you lot are repulsive...
 5. I don't mind Mustang Sally, I've erm... 'altered' it a bit. Sex on Fire is my nemesis, it is just so f*****g dull to play.
 6.
Good call! First thing I did when my ex moved out 3 months ago was buy a bass.. Got another one last week as well!
You got another ex already?
 7. I have a similar policy. One bass in, one wife out.
 8.
Fingers crossed!
Well spotted! Fingers crossed here as well.
 9. I take back what I said earlier about needing a crowbar to make me let go of it, this is definitely a two crowbar job
 10.
So, if I've understood this correctly, DV have spit the dummy out because they've been told to sell (or at least advertise) at a proper mark-up?
Possibly. Not being part of DV it can only be conjecture. The dealership agreements have a number of criteria that have to be met, price is just one of them.
 11.
Oh God - now I've got a mental image of you rogering a room full of people in evening dress while wearing a womble suit. Thanks.
My work here is done...
 12.
Oh well played sir...well played! This post deserves more recognition you oafs!!!
I know! They're a tough audience here.
 13.
Eating out and then off to an exotic bar? Let us know and we'll try to help.
I think Ped has a master list of all the Greggs...
 14.
I just asked my mate who is manager of one of DV's branches about this and he simply said 'No more Fender'. I'm guessing this is something to do with the new dealership only model as mentioned above, meaning profit margins and prices are set by Fender.
It's common practice within the music retail industry and has been for decades. Gibson, Marshall, Yamaha... any well known 'premium brand' - they all follow the same model.
 15. Very good. Welcome aboard James.
 16. First pub gig of the year in the sleepy market town of Market Bosworth. The landlady had done a great job publicising the night and, with our little following, we played to a packed house. Pub totally packed, landladies 'target figure' smashed by 9.30 and a good night was had by all. Picked up a St Patricks Night gig for another pub while we were there, so work starts on a new set this week.
 17.
In any case, are the symptoms I'm describing typical of failing battery?
I'm an SR505 user, when my battery goes flat it cuts in and out and sounds awful. It really depends on the design of the preamp as to what happens when the battery dips below a certain point. Definitely worth changing it, if it doesn't fix the problem then it's one thing you can cross off the list.
 18.
Tee hee. Or I could tell him to stick it where the Rising Sun don't shine .. (only joking )
Coventry?
 19.
Yes you did - the Orinoco Folk Prize for best Bass Player and Recycling.
Damn, I missed getting my award. I had my speech all written as well... "I'd like to thank you for having me here this evening... and for those of you that haven't had me yet, be patient, I'm working my way round the room as fast as I can manage..."
 20. I did ask a couple of people that saw it, but it seems that I didn't win anything...
 21. I tried a 'little bit on the side' once... ...but it made my peas taste funny.
 22.
Replaced the battery - I thought this was it, because the battery was only reading 8v on my multi-meter. The new one reads 9.4v and I still have the problem.
Strange as it may sound, and without going into a long nerdy explanation, you can't judge battery life using a multimeter. If you've replaced the battery with a brand new, never been used before, one - then the battery isn't the problem. However, if you've dug around and found a battery from somewhere and assumed it was OK because of your multimeter, then you've not eliminated 'duff battery' from the list of possibilities.
 23.
Spent a very pleasant couple of hours (and more) at the Fairport gig in Burnley last night. Added bonus was when I walked in who should be loitering around the merch stand as they were setting up but Dave Pegg. Grabbed a few minutes of his time and had an interesting chat.
I've bumped into Dave quite a few times over the years, really nice bloke.
 24.
It's interesting that people liken the music industry (and labels) to things like Kodak and Jessops. Kodak and Jessops got out-paced by the market and left behind, the things they provided weren't in mass demand any longer.
Jessops had a number of issues but their largest problem was retail competition, although they also suffered by trying to maintain their 'pro' background with a mass high street presence. Kodak just weren't in a position to reinvent their entire business to compensate for the digital market, they simply never thought they'd ever have to. Ironically, Kodak researchers actually invented the first digital camera but couldn't get senior management approval to develop it further. Polaroid was another casualty, although somewhat earlier on. Their entire business was even more volatile, being based solely on instant photography they just couldn't find an alternative market.
 25. Does that mean that Dolby was an antihistamine?
